No.
OLineman don’t rotate as much bc they have to be the same page at all times.
Makes sense, and I'm not being sarcastic or anything but if you believe he won't beat out any of our current starters, then what's the point of signing a grad transfer for just one year and taking up that scholarship spot? Of course I know depth is always good to have but you think maybe we did it not only for that reason but to also send out the signal, "hey we're looking and will sign grad transfers if you're interested in coming here."?

Southers will likely start. He said the 4 returning starters, Southers will be the 5th.

But as ibeeballin pointed out, southers is RT and I doubt he changes positions. Technique and footwork are different for each.

Andrew Marshall was this yr RT and has graduated. You bring in Grad Transfer in for competition and depth

Gotcha now. I thought you were speculating Lee would be taking that spot over and beating Southers out for the starting spot.

to develop players on the OL and DL big enough to match up with our opponents. Clemson and GA may be extremes, but I remember how disheartening it was that we were about 70-80 lighter than them on the LOS. I put on about 65 lbs once and I would have dropped dead if I ran 5 yards. Not going to be a quick turn, but realistically, are we talking about a year, 2 years or how long?

I went from 290-295 to 315-320 in the spring/summer before going to fall camp at UCF. I added nearly 100lbs on my bench and 125 on squat. Didn’t lose much in the way of quickness or speed. And every now and then I’d throw a cut block to make sure I could still chase down safeties.

I learned the play book well enough to start at UCF.

So if big, dumb, slow, false startin’ me can do it, I’m pretty sure anyone can.

Both of these statements are not necessarily true.

We rotated linemen at UCF in game all the time.

I played both right and left tackle. We had a guard that switched between R/L guard and tackle. Our other guard could switch R/L and play center.

The footwork is not very different between positions beyond pass protection.

Jack DeFoor will also play a lot this year. He and Southers probably tackles and it wouldn't surprise me if one of them supplants Quinney at LT. But Quinney should also improve at LT with a little added muscle/bulk. Lee will back up Cooper again and also rotate in at RT.

As pointed out, life is about to get bit easier for our OLine. Some don’t understand how difficult it was trying to pass protect out of a 3pt stance. The tenth of reaction lost alone was deadly. The biggest hurdle i see may be for Kenny Cooper and him learning blitz picking and help sliding the line (the Qb will help in this as well) and the technical stuff like when to overset or short set on a pass rusher

Absolutely. Pass blocking when you start out in a 3 pt stance is difficult. Especially for the tackles who really have to retreat to form the pocket.

2 pt stance will also help the RB block by increasing the vision presnap.

A non option OL, there’s no weight on your hand, so being in a 3 point stance is just preference on passing downs.

At Tech we had 80% weight on our down hand. I recommend you all to try to get into that position at home and contort yourselves to try to step back. Think about blocking one of Clem’s DEs. It will all make sense.

I can see how that helps pad level stay low but good Lord I couldn't imagine that much weight on my down hand. We were wishbone/wing T/with some power I about 20+ yrs ago in high school and even then our coach taught us that if your down arm got swatted and you couldn't stop yourself from falling over forward, that was too much weight on it.

You think we'll have more rotation on the OL than previously to get him and some other fresh bodies in?
I think there is nothing in our OL personnel group that is set in stone. We don't know anything about how any of the kids, returning or incoming, will play, how they will adapt to the NWO. We just have hope.

I don't care about current weight. We will be bigger 8 months from now. If anything, I wish some of our OG were two inches shorter. I am not as worried about the OL as I am about the offensive skill positions.

So I predict the starters will be the kids who work it, learn it, and earn it. Everyone has a new OC this year.

Super dumb question but why were our linemen in a 3-pt stance when the entire stadium knew we were in a passing down (3rd and 9 or whatever)? Did we think we were fooling the defense? I don't understand why we would handicap ourselves like that. I guess its not really relevant at this point but I remain curious.

Iirc, CPJ wanted everything to look the same bc we could still run on 3rd & long

CPJ said the OL had the option to use a different stance, but that the OL felt it was an advantage to stay down since everyone knew we might run it on 3rd and long anyway and thus still had to respect the run.

That said, pass blocking was atrocious at times. In retrospect, I think the team would have been better off staying with two OL coaches instead of experimenting with the special teams coaches. I know special teams were bad, but the special teams coaches didn’t seem have that much impact.

This is the answer. Incoming freshman will also get a chance. Nobody’s spot is safe. You’ll probably see them switching positions all spring tbh.
