Spurrier was his own enemy winning games, making them a minor powerhouse, and turning the fans into typical SEC fans.
What year was it, 84 or 85, they upset FSU to get to No. 2 - and the next week lost to Navy?
They played in the Orange Bowl that year against Oklahoma State. They had Thurman Thomas. They beat the crap out of the Gamecocks. I went to the game.

Spurrier turned Duke into a winner.
He breathed new life into a lackluster Florida program (anybody else remember them going 1-10 in the years before he got there)
He made South Carolina relevant for a brief period.

But I still don't get why he empty set from his 1 against Nebraska. Frazier and the Huskers ran over them that night.

I've always assumed that's what the "CU" in @johncu stood for.
Got 2 degrees from Clemson but will always cheer for GT when they play. Sitting on the Hill as a student in my GT shirt in 2006 when Gameday was at Clemson-GT may have been the worst game I've ever been to. I know we made the ACCCG that year, but I couldn't get past Gailey/Nix letting Clemson "shut down" Calvin Johnson that day.

One of my favorite GT games I've ever attended was when I was a sophomore and went up to Death Valley in 1989. It was Clemson's 100th homecoming and Jerry Mays and the boys blew out Clemson. We were up something like 30-7 in the 4th qtr, the place was emptying faster than the Titanic and the scoreboard kept flashing "YA GOTTA BELIEVE!".

LMAO - yeah, YA GOTTA BELIEVE we just kicked dat ass!! Some stupid Tiger redneck kicked in my GT license plate.

Not necessary . Unlike the sec, we don't live vicariously through that year's particular champion
Believe you are correct, but can't help but notice the team roughly ranked 20th in recruiting nationally is about 12th to 14th in sec.

We gotta ketchup.

The Marlboro Man, Joe Morrison was the coach at that time.

He was a UGA killer at South Carolina - not quite like UF but still beat them quite regularly. He clearly gave South Carolina the best run they have ever experienced. I think he is my favorite coach of all-time. Changed the game with his fast 5 receiver sets and spreading the field. Saban may be a better coach but he is not the innovator Spurrier provided to the game. Quick wit and honesty - no football head coach speak. His record is unbelievable with 5 SEC championships.
Why would anybody Big Cry this post? drunj?

A couple of years earlier we beat CU badly when I was a hotel mgr in NMB. I had a sign shop make me a plate with the score from a plastic that was damn near un-breakable, and a great old gold color. The score was engraved from the back and spray painted white to stand out, which also made it hard to deface.

One night I came out and found black heel marks all over the sign. Marks came right off with some brush cleaner, felt sorry for the CU fan who must have been terribly frustrated! Wish I could find that sign material sgain.
