I just don't understand the fascination with a big QB, especially with our current personnel and our OC's expressed desire to run "multiple" systems. A QB that can't run dramatically reduces what you can do on offense in this day and age. I know tall =/= slow, but there's definitely a correlation.
How much does a QB need to run? How athletic do they need to be according to you?

I think we will play the best QB we have and call plays accordingly. Next year, barring a grad transfer, we will have a dual threat QB, so he will run a good bit. If we recruit a statuesque pocket passer, we will go with that. The main thing is accuracy. Think about Joe Ham and Godsey. Very different quarterbacks but that's what they had in common and I'd take a clone of either one, as we haven't really had that kind of accuracy since.

Our QB will need to be able to move at least until we have an OL that can form a pocket consistently. The current players will be adjusting to different blocking schemes. They may very well learn quickly and surprise us which I hope is the case. We have the OL coach now that can teach them.

Accuracy is one of the least teachable traits of a qb. You have it or you don't. It can be refined, but not dramatically changed.

It's amazing what a statuesque QB who knows how to adjust blocking schemes and move within the pocket can do for your pass protection proficiency.

I just feel like in this day and age you need either a mobile QB or an overwhelming talent advantage. At a place like Bama, Clemson, UGA, etc. you can get away with a statue because you'll have great protection and skill guys that can routinely beat their man 1v1 (although Tua and Trevor Lawrence can both run). You can just be a distributor because your overall talent advantage will automatically result in favorable matchups that can be exploited. Having a mobile QB stresses defenses and makes it much easier for a skilled OC to create matchup problems that way.

Take a look at the current top 25. How many of those teams don't have either an overwhelming talent advantage or a mobile QB that runs at least enough to make defenses plan to defend them?

Take a look at the current national champions.
I pretty much covered that with the "overwhelming talent advantage".

I'll gladly take a statue QB if you pair him with the best skill position talent in the country. Clemson has two future 1st round receivers and an elite slot receiver, along with a dominant run game and OL.

So 6"-1" Shaq goes from the TO right guard to the starting right guard protecting Brady as a rookie. Damn, without Brent in the mix.
I think Parker and crew will adapt well.
Run an offense with QB under center at point of attack you get bounce on the run game but have a QB needing to move away from los quickly to pass- with tackles that have hands on the ground. Shotgun you set your option further from los and give your QB more room to work the field.
CGC is the bees kneez. Great hire and glad he brought Brent Key home.

Their QB is also pretty mobile for a big guy so they kind of have all the bases covered.

The great thing about all of this is that CGC and staff have the football knowledge to run multiple concepts to take advantage of the strengths while minimizing the weaknesses that our players have. That’s super refreshing.

We will have to go under center from time to time if we want to compete. Especially in short yardage. Clemson, Alabama, and UGAg all have that ability to muscle out short yardage in a traditional fullback/tailback/TE set. Clemson will even bring in the two giant DL's if need be.

So we have one offensive lineman in 10 years in the NFL and that means what? Duke, Wake, and GT only have 1 each. UVA, FSU each have 5, NCSU 4, UNC, Clemson, Louisville 3, VT 2. The Big 10, Big 12, and SEC probably have way more, I didn't bother looking. Here is the link, http://www.espn.com/nfl/college . I did not include TE or long snappers. I think we agree that Brent Key is the answer and his blocking schemes and ability to teach current players will be significant. Having a mobile QB will be an added benefit especially out of the shotgun.
