Rambling Thoughts of An Old Tech Fan

I have a sincere question about this. For the longest time I always heard (primarily on Stingtalk) that Giff Smith was THE GUY for our recruiting success under Gailey. I never remember anyone mentioning Collins. Did we just not know the extent of CGC’s hand in recruiting until he came here and his background got a spotlight shined on it (and now everyone is pretending like we always knew he was the key to the recruiting juice)? Or am I somehow just misremembering how often Giff got credited for our good recruiting?

I'm not enough in the know to confirm whether or not CGC is the reason we had the recruiting class that we did. But the reason for many conflicting stories here is due to the environment of that era. The fanbase was heavily split over Gailey, so when CGC left for Bama I think many were looking to downplay his departure and spread out the glory of that recruiting class (namely to Giff), afterall it IS a joint effort. But I do remember when 2008 wasn't shaping up like 2007, there were many on Scout saying it was only because 2007 was loaded in GA in a way that was unique to that year. I'm sure the truth is probably a combination of factors, like most things. And maybe it was mostly Giff, but I will say this, Saban hired Geoff to run his recruiting game, and it paid off with a #1 ranked class. The next few years are going to paint this old story in an entirely new light.

You're right, we will win *fewer*

I believe with a bit of knowledge, that both Gif and CGC are great recruiters. I also believe CPJ was one helluva game day coach and CGC has yet to demonstrate he is on CPJs level. Which is not to say he won't develop into said level. We will know come mid October where he stands currently, and know definitively come November of 2020 (not from a W-L standpoint, but how we are competing). "Coaching" should be evident by 18-20 games.

I'd say all the people that met the Collins hire with doubt are the people that did not know him or know what he was up to the first two times he was here.
Techbert, absolutely love your posts, but 15-10 at Temple against same level of competition with a program that had been turned around in a big way by his predecessor, speaks volumes to me. We can all be optimistic, but the reality of Tech football weighs heavily on said optimism. Personally, the 2021 season will settle things for me. By season, I don't mean recruiting rankings---I mean Ws---see CBR.

Luv that CGC is a defensive coach and a great recruiter. Hope he has his Ralph Friedgen- if so, we are off to the races.
Can't wait for "toe meets leather"- 19,20 and 21

And Collins is the only candidate that wants to be at Georgia Tech and has a plan to succeed at Georgia Tech. Others may have wanted the gig, but they didn't have a vision for specific success at this particular (and unique) school. Nobody, and I mean nobody, conjured up a strategy to use our excellent educational offerings as a positive attraction for INNER CITY ATLANTA athletes. I am pumped. Even if we go 4-8, we are changing the paradigm about "can't learn calculus and play winning football." In five years, you won't know the place.

Straight up juice. I’m onboard.

I'd say Temple had one big year under the prior coach. He did turn it around, but I don't think they regressed under Collins. There were some close games where the ball didn't bounce Temple's way last season. They did score more points in 2018 than they had in any season in the program's history

Seems like a very superficial read of the situation at Temple.

To me CPJ was a great game day OC but I don’t know what that means about HC. I can’t recall any great game day decisions or adjustments that weren’t specifically about what the offense was doing. I like Paul but there are a lot of very good OCs around. Someone tell me what i’m missing.

NC state 2005 - you tell me the ball will be in the hands of the best receiver ever at GT and he will be in the end zone? I'll take that scenario every time.

You tell me we just got a first down on the three. Have a big offensive line. Mike Cox at fullback. PJ Daniels at tailback. Old college rules so clock rules so clock is already stopped for a first down. NC State's DL is having trouble even getting downfield to get in position for the next play. They are gassed. Reggie is calling the team up to get a snap off to drive a stake through their heart. I turn to my buddy and say "ballgame, we got this"....and then......before the snap.....Pat Nix calls a timeout.
I go ballistic. We don't need to waste that timeout. Get to the line, hand it to PJ, we win. I turn to my buddy and say "we are going to ööööing pass the ball to Calvin, öööö". NC State is subbing players. Their DL has taken a knee and are getting some Gatorade and catching their breath. I am pissed. A minute before, they could hardly walk.
No, we did not need to pass the damn ball from the 3. Run the ball. If you don't get it, run it again, if you don't get it call a time out, throw on 3rd, if it is incomplete, 4th down is the entire playbook - run/pass. Nix was an idiot. He blew that game and he blew the UGAg game.

I did have particular satisfaction, since I was attending with a UNC fan, when PJ busted a long TD run near the end of the UNC game to ice it. From South to north. Maybe 2005? The UNC fan I was with was hoping for a stop and a chance. When PJ broke it open, he slammed his cup down and shouted "GODDAMMIT!".

He was also with me when Nat Dorsey schooled Julius Peppers. He screamed for holding all night long. Peppers just got schooled

Exactly how I remember it. State def players were walking dead. Run the damn ball and then call a timeout if by some miracle we don't score. I wouldn't be surprised if Nix wanted to call a reverse to Calvin but was talked out of it.

They were. I was mad as hell watching them all get to take a knee and get fluids and recover. We would have easily scored running. Reggie had just had a long run.

The end of the 2005 NC State game was a microcosm of the entire Chan Gailey/Reggie Ball era. The end of the 2005 uga game was like watching a rerun. Tech moves up and down the field with ease running the ball between the 20's. Every time we got in the red zone, Gailey would abandon the run game and have Reggie Ball try to pass for the TD, and always disaster would happen. Interception, incompletion, sack, and/or fumble.

Miami was 10-3. We're ranked no 2 in the last week and lost a head scratcher to Pitt. We beat ourselves against Miami just like we did with Tennessee. Remember we only had 11 games in 2017. We won 5, and were certainly a team that was good enough to win 7, even 8 games (we wouldn't beat Duke, clemson, uga)

Even last year could have easily been a 9 win season...
We wouldn’t have beat the Natty Champs either, even though they chickened out. ööööing Black & Gold pussies.
