I have a sincere question about this. For the longest time I always heard (primarily on Stingtalk) that Giff Smith was THE GUY for our recruiting success under Gailey. I never remember anyone mentioning Collins. Did we just not know the extent of CGC’s hand in recruiting until he came here and his background got a spotlight shined on it (and now everyone is pretending like we always knew he was the key to the recruiting juice)? Or am I somehow just misremembering how often Giff got credited for our good recruiting?
I'm not enough in the know to confirm whether or not CGC is the reason we had the recruiting class that we did. But the reason for many conflicting stories here is due to the environment of that era. The fanbase was heavily split over Gailey, so when CGC left for Bama I think many were looking to downplay his departure and spread out the glory of that recruiting class (namely to Giff), afterall it IS a joint effort. But I do remember when 2008 wasn't shaping up like 2007, there were many on Scout saying it was only because 2007 was loaded in GA in a way that was unique to that year. I'm sure the truth is probably a combination of factors, like most things. And maybe it was mostly Giff, but I will say this, Saban hired Geoff to run his recruiting game, and it paid off with a #1 ranked class. The next few years are going to paint this old story in an entirely new light.
