Quarterback Theory of Mine

There are only two people competing for the starting quarterback spot. Lucas Johnson and James Graham. Tobias Oliver I do not believe to be in contention in the eyes of Collins:

As mentioned by other posters, Collins is running a very disjointed offense. Different looks depending on who’s in. What we want our Offense to look like is not what Tobias’ Skill set is. However running the offense they DONT want to run is what we are most effective at right now. And that is read option with a heavy emphasis on run and quarterback keeper.

That’s not what Collins wants to convey to new recruits. He wants them believing we are going to be a pass first offense and there is nothing wrong with that. So here we are left to pick what we are good at vs what we want to be. Tobias will score more points, but he is not what Collins is looking for. I also believe Graham would start if he did a better job reading defenses. Bottom line is all of the people saying our offense sucks need to realize we don’t have a single candidate to play the position. It’s my belief none of the 3 will be playing quarterback next season.

I’m in 100% agreement. But he is being blackballed because that’s not the kind of offense we want to convey.

So CGC is willing to lose, and display a (currently) weaker offense on the field, in order to win over potential new recruits? Does not compute.

I agree with all this. If we want to win any more than 3 games we need to start Oliver and build our offense around our players instead of doing this square peg round hole BS. IIWII.

I agree with your overall premise, except I think Graham could run read option pretty effectively. He's not as big as Tobias, but he's definitely faster and can actually throw downfield to punish teams who creep into the box to stuff the run.

I think we're approaching the point where we may need to give up on Lucas Johnson. He looks too timid to be a serious threat on designed runs, and unless he looks COMPLETELY different in practice, he isn't gonna be the guy to turn us into a spread passing team.

I'd like to see a healthy dose of both TO and JG, and I'm cool with both of them being on the field at the same time. Even outside of the obvious trick play potential, both are great athletes who can make things happen with the ball in their hands.

I think people are under a false idea that our coaches want to come out slinging the ball all over the field. Spread doesn't necessarily mean passing. In fact, our coaches have specifically said their goal is to be balanced and to tailor the offense to our personnel. I think that's what they're trying to do.

This. We have the talent to make it to a lower tier bowl this year; but we may not because of the coaching philosophy being employed. I think the offense will get better during the season; but how much better is a question mark.

Defense will not be able to carry us in games where the opposing offense decides they can blow us off the line and just run it down our throat.

Exactly. If we even just ran the same mediocre offense we did last year, we're probably an 7-9 win team if our defense has improved as much as it looks like it has. Hell, we won 7 games last year with our trashwater defense and a QB who may be even worse at passing than what we have now.

I think the coaches are of the same mind, considering how much we've tried to run the ball. Problem is, we're doing a really shitty job of it right now.

I am not familiar with Jordan Yates' skill set but if he is any good, I think we'll see him in for four games mid-season. Why waste him early, coach him up and then see if he helps us for four games. Heck maybe he plays the next to last three games and then a bowl game? Can he do that?

I agree that we won't see any of the three QB's starting next year. If there is a transfer QB this winter, I think they have to look at GT as a solid option.

Another approach would be to run more west coast offense (quick outs, slants, screens, etc.) and maybe do it from under center. We should definitely use PJ's techniques when we are first and goal at the two.

Oliver is a player and yet, I'm not sure where he should be playing.

I think recruits would be more attracted to a winning team that goes to a bowl. It's an RPO offense no matter who is in the shotgun, right? If TO is back there and we are 80/20 run this year and go bowling I'm doubtful that would scare off recruits.

I could not disagree with most of your statements more. Collins wants to win and so does Patenaude and neither of them have an issue running option plays. But they're also trying to transition to a new offense and the way to do that isn't to run the damn triple option all of the time because that's the type players you have and the experience you have. At some point, you have to let them learn to run the new play book. Also, Collins has never said we want to be a pass first offense and he doesn't do that to sell it to recruits. He and Coach Patenaude both say we want to be balanced.

And once again, we lost 2 offensive linemen Saturday...one on the 5th play and one on the 16th play. One of those was your center and your backup scholarship center was out for the game already. So a walk-on center played most of the game and backup linemen made up your starters for the remainder of the day. You guys are reading wayyyyyyy too much into the playcalling because Coach P was just scrambling, trying to find players and plays that would work with an offensive line that had more holes than swiss cheese.

Give it a few more games with a healthy(healthier?) offensive line and then start to make comments about what the offense will look like. Because for now, the only samples you have are against the top team in the country and a game with your backups' backups playing on the OLine.
