Yes, the 435 mile drive home after the game was not long enough for me to get over it. I am getting too old for being at BDS stadium for an afternoon game and then driving home to be ready for Sunday morning, especially after a loss to The Citadel.
I thought it was the worst coached game I have seen by a Tech coaching staff. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and personal fouls show a lack of discipline. The stubbornness to play 7 ahead of 8 at QB is indefensible. Lucas had two nice back shoulder throws that our receivers played well. That was it for any good plays from him. The team moves so much better behind Tobias, because he gives us a threat with his running ability. He had a nice throw hitting a receiver in stride. He did his part to pull the game out.
The end was a fiasco. The team did not execute the simplest of plays - the spike. Get on the line of scrimmage and stay still. The play after the illegal procedure should have been another spike. The failure to realize the clock would start back up is simply a failure to know the rules. In OT, changing QB’s on 3rd and 8 and not using your time-out was idiotic. You had just seen at the end of regulation Tobias was capable of making a big, game winning play. So we take him out and Lucas takes a sack.
My wife said something reasonable about 350 miles into the trip home, namely, that for our new coach losing the game was probably better in the long run. To play and coach such a poor game and win might have been the worst outcome. Welcome to Georgia Tech, Coach Collins. The loss to Furman was the most embarrassing to date at home. But, those Paladin teams were competing for national playoff titles. This Citadel team lost to Towson and Elon and is not expected to be the near the top of the Southern Conference. You have a lot of work to do. Your defense is weak. Your place kicking game is unreliable. You have to play the right people. You are going to have to hold players accountable. The offense lacks talent, especially in the line. The unsportsmanlike calls can’t be tolerated. You have to get end of game management right.
So, three games in you have work to do. The sloganism and false sense of cool bravado does not win games. I am pulling for you and will get my mind rite to keep making the long trips to support you and the players. Style is not unimportant. But, it always pales in comparison to substance. Good luck and Go Jackets!
