Best coaches show so far. Less empty hype, a little more reality.

They made a good choice of talking about Bedford reviewing film and seeing how challenging their task is.

Basically sean, having come from the cpj system was blown away with how detailed and complex our nfl based system was. It was details and level of scheme he had no idea about.

Bottom line, its part what I figured, we are all true freshman on O right now. Heads swimming combined with injuries and kids not built for this system. As an example. In the last 4-5 years iirc cpj recruited essentially all G projected outside of high school except i think either quinney or that other taller recruit jump. And both I believe were lightly recruited. Point being the type of guys we need are not here physically. Combine that with what bedford was blown away with.

U know. Sean. Its ok even with u doing color to post here. Ok. Wes durham used to do it alot. We would debate with him. On this site. So @EffortWarrior79 might be a good time to be an alumni and fan too not just the color guy

Quinney had offers from Duke, UNC and Mississippi State.
Didn't look up Jump's offers.

This may not be a very insightful comment but this does not sound like what I was hearing before the season about running a system that made sense given our personnel. This sounds like what I'm hearing the problem is now - that we are shoving square pegs into round holes. I understand that no system is a good solution when our personnel is as limited as it is but must we magnify that problem by running a system that we don't have the bodies or minds to run?

yeah I think it's clear CGC said "öööö it - rip the bandaid off now". I don't disagree with anything you said.

So u just scrap your system? At some point u have to teach it and transition. All we are doing is running a spread zone every other team runs. Its just terribly different on how u read fronts, physically block, what the check keys are for the plays etc. bottom line is there is no hybrid between this and pauls cut block, cut and scoop, drive block system and zone spread.

The system we run is fine. The scheme is sound and very well used all over. We will recruit the guys we need to do it. All our OL are true freshman in this system. So it takes time. Some of our guys like quinney should be ok in it over time.

But i like the staffs call here. Which is completely transition 100 percent day one and take the lumps.

Fyi. Just also, I believe that our zone system while used everywhere in some fashion may be a touch more intricate than some other schools version. I think its way more nfl like than college like. Its going to take a bit more time to learn. But, in the long run that ol system is sound. My evidence for this is collins has said we are tech and smart. We are going to run a system only smart players can handle.
 
I guess I always knew the blocking schemes would be very different but it never really clicked how different or how difficult it would be to transition from strict assignment o line play to a more versatile style of play. Add in that we are down 4 starters, 3 indefinitely, and it’s no wonder why we are getting the level of play we are getting. The pass defense is lights out, particularly given our offensive woes. Offense is going to need a lot of work and the trenches on both sides as well.

To add to this, aside from a hybrid possibly not even existing, you have to also figure for how much the current staff actually knows about Johnson's blocking scheme, which my impression was also not a simple system (possibly shifted more complexity to the coach given all that was said about him making in game adjustments).

Trying to teach any of the new blocking scheme is already going to put a steep learning curve on the player side; it could be a worse situation putting a learning curve on the coaches side too trying to figure out Johnson's blocking scheme. Ultimately the coaches are going to try to make things as understandable as they can to the current players, but they'll still only be teaching what they know.

At this point is there really value in running Tobias more and going 5-7 rather than 3-9 or whatever (those are probably both generous)? All that will do is slow the transition, delaying our eventual acclimation to the new style of play. If we did that before game 3 and were sitting at 3-1 right now then I may feel differently. As it stands, I think prepping our program for the future (with maybe some fun results sprinkled into 2019) is the best path forward.
 
Question: would fans have rathered Collins have been negative toward the roster and more upfront about the offensive roster in particular?

* I know many fans that would have hated it and would have complained about it

* I wouldn't have wanted him to dwell on it but I do think he could have said something early on that we didn't really have a QB or OL that fit our system. That we would do what we could coaching wise but it might take a couple of recruiting years to get the roster correct.

* I believe that is obviously true and think it might have been best to say it upfront, move one, and then do the best we can. Might have prepared the fans more for what is happening.

* College coaches do have an impossible job where they have to always be recruiting and motivating players and all comments have an effect on that. Fans want to hear one thing but it might not be best for the program. Only coaches like Saban can be honest and even they tend to still say stuff that cater to recruiting. I remember when Saban hated being asked about Hurts because he didn't want to say the words "Tua is better"

Graham needs a lot of work so lots of game play might be the only way to see if he can develop into a good QB.
