No. I’m not even sure he is as good as Richt. Richt played much better teams than Kirby.
Kirby has had the luxury of playing the weakest Tennessee, Florida and even South Carolina teams in the past quarter century.
He’s not a national championship caliber coach.

The UGA window is rapidly closing - 2nd and 26 may have been the zenith for this era. Florida is back to being a top 10 team, who the hell knows why Tennessee continues to struggle, but the talent is there, they lost to USCe this season. They open SEC play @Bama next season, and, in an unusual scheduling change, they host Auburn in early October -chances are they are 1-2 in SEC play early next season. Most importantly, by 2021-22, GT will be a threat to them year-end-year-out as well.

Honestly, I think he gets at most 2 more years before their fan base turns on him faster than a submarine pulling a crazy ivan.

I think they'll be understanding next year that Clemson has a juggernaut with Lawrence, but 2021 will be "their year", and when the football gods laugh at them again, the calls for Kirby's head will become deafening to the administration in Athens.

This is a really, really good point. Richt had to contend with Urban Meyer at Florida, 7 years of Fulmer at Tennessee and occasional great years for other teams like the year Cam Newton won the NC at Auburn. Kirby has benefitted from an incredibly weak SEC East during his entire tenure.

Is Kirby a dumb ass? Sure comes off that way to me. I've often wondered if CGC and CBK also understood this when they made their push to come to GT, knowing there is a real opening for GT to step up and become the premier P5 school in GA. The timing Gods are shining on us maybe?

The Georgia fans are screaming that Kirby equals Richt. But they are wrong. What they refuse to recognize is that Georgia is still Georgia, regardless of coach.
...and the fact that LSU is much better than they are. Whether folks want to believe or not, LSU always seems to have players, but they usually have less than stellar QB play. With a QB AND an above average complement of supporting staff, they tend to be very good. There is no doubt in my mind that Burrow is the best QB in the country this year.

Plus Auburn had a NC run during his tenure.

Here’s the deal in my little mind - Kirby can recruit and get highly rated players based on the recruiting services. However, I am very suspect that he is actually getting the best players. Kind of reminds me a little of my criticisms of Danny Hall who I believe in the past has simply taken the easy path regarding recruiting and simply drives up to East Cobb or Lake Point and signs whatever kids he is told are the ones he should. I’m hoping Ramsey stops that and actually takes the time to watch a kid to determine the best players. The fact that Kirby has to use injuries as an excuse at a factory that can get 3 deep in studs is just funny. I guess my point is they don’t do quality control very well in Athens. He inherited some incredible players from Richt but his WR’s and RB’s are going to be average the next few season. The Cook kid could be solid but their days of having a Gurley, Chubb, and Michel are over.

I think last year was a Canary in a coal mine season. They had a ton of players leave for the draft who were advised not to and subsequently not get drafted or get drafted really late, and they had several coaches jump ship. Something ain't right.

ETA: Mike Bobo just accepted the OC job at USC lite. Interesting he wouldn't come work with Kirby in Athens.
Something has seemed off about their program the past couple years. I get the sense no one likes playing or working for Kirby, and that he is bad at evaluating (see Fields) and developing (see Fromm) talent. My guess is he sells kids on the program while recruiting, then they get in the program and realize they’ve made a mistake and want to jump ship. Could be wrong, but I don’t see them winning a NC with that kind of unhappiness around the program, regardless of how many 5 stars he brings in.

Kirby Smart is a defensive coordinator masquerading as a head coach. Everyone paying attention knows that the defense is his defense, not the defense of his defensive coordinator. As long he continues to recruit to his for his ideal defense he will put plenty of defensive players in the NFL and he will have a wet noodle of an offense. Kirby could learn a lot from Venables’ defensive style. Simplification, greater utility from the strong safety/linebacker hybrids and less schemes. Depth in base over 3-4 with nickel utility players is the difference in stopping a modern offense. Kirby has to do full defensive subs to play to different looks from a spread team. When they are in up tempo it becomes problematic for him. Less personnel, more man.... be willing to go 1-on-1 on the long pass in order to free up scholarships for a demanding offensive coordinator.

been saying for about a year now Kirby is more like Muschamp than he is like Saban. and he lost to Muschamp.
