Again filling a spot doesn’t mean it’s at the same position. And I’m not even the one who used that phrase to begin with. I was responding to the poster who used that phrase.
And I used that phrase based on posts in the 2020 thread. There was no grand conspiracy to my post.

Maybe we simply offered Wiggles but with one caveat: Ivey. Everyone would have known the gig, no bad feelings.

I don’t care what the film looks like for a man with athletic genetics and the frame of a Spartan. I want him on the team. If he pans out awesome. If he doesn’t he’ll still look great coming off the team bus.

Possible. Still doesn’t give us immediate help there though. Which is what we needed to address. But again we’ve knocked it out of the park at DE/OLB/RB/DB. So it’s still a net positive.
We only have one LB signed. Are any of these DEs being recruited for OLB? We are pretty short on numbers there even if we are normally in a 4-2-5.

Wright is an OLB. And one that I’m very high on. Third favorite guy in the class behind Gibbs/Ivey.

I really like Tyson Meiguez because of his speed. His sideline-to-sideline range is something we've missed. I love David Curry's instincts. I'm just not a fan of his ability to get off blocks or his speed to run down plays before they're 6 - 8 yards down field.

One thing that jumps out to me from EJs film is how well he gets off the ball at the snap. Uses his arms pretty well to maneuver as well. Looks to be getting pushed around at time - even in his own highlight reel. But that could just mean the coaches are projecting to put a lot of lbs on him.

Looks like a lock for a RS and somebody we’d hope to get big by year 3 so he can contribute.

I’d assume any that are listed as a WDE have the potential to play LB. We just have to get them on campus and evaluate their fit (we would already have an idea). Franks still on the table as well. I would not worry about LB. I personally am only concerned about DT at this point. We have a few potential future DTs signed, but none ready for that role day 1.

I mean we can debate what EJs rating should be based on film which I’m down to do, but we just replaced an established 5.7 with an unknown 5.4 and you’re on here saying literally the exact opposite.
I get the impression he’s a late bloomer, which explains why he’s lightly evaluated on the sites and even a shock commit to the insiders. Recruiting is about what a player can become and not necessarily who that player is on his high school highlight reel. He certainly has the athleticism and frame to become a major contributor on the DL. With where we are on numbers, he would not have been a take unless Coleman, CGC, and Thacker really liked him. We pride ourselves on being a developmental program, so let’s prove it by tapping into this kid’s HUGE potential. I’m excited to add him!

This recruiting class should silence the Collins doubters. The guy is about to bring in the best class we’ve had since O’Leary was here. So much for not being able to recruit at GT because of academics, stadium size and budget problems.
My position has not changed. Three to four years and I'll make a judgement. This recruiting class seems good but it is one small component. What matters are the results on the field. Ultimately this staff will be judged by how well they develop players and manage games.

It wouldn't surprise me if he plays for a school that doesn't get a ton of recruiting attention. One thing I learned early on in coaching was that your kid's coach plays a HUGE part in getting him/her recruited unless your child just happens to be one of the top 200 or so players in the country in his/her sport.

There are a lot of high schools where the coach genuinely wants his players to be recruited but has no real idea how to make that happen and players fall through the cracks all the time. I've heard Coach Johnson mention three or four times on signing day that he or an assistant coach was at some school recruiting a player and they'd ask the coach there, "Who are the best three or four players you guys go up against?". From that, they'd keep hearing this same kid's name over & over from opposing coaches and they'd go seek out this kid and end up signing him.

I think a lot of people have no idea how vast the network of high schools is and how it's impossible for a single person or even a small group of people to go see everyone in a region. It could be that a college scout came to a game where he didn't have a ton of big plays or he was playing hurt and didn't stand out...or was sick and didn't play, etc.

Agreed, as would most everyone else. My thing is we need the doubters to STFU for a couple of years. One of Collins’ biggest selling points as the CEO of GT football is that he’ll be able to substantially raise the talent level on the Flats. We need to give him time to do that, then evaluate the on-field product at that point. Evaluating before he has time to leverage his strength as a recruiter is unfair, because you’re evaluating him based on only a portion of the total package.

We need to bring classes like this consistently. One time could just be a bounce or relatively lucky year. If we can get in the top 25 year in year out, I don't care how bad the coaches are on the field, we'll have some good teams.

Not really. For one I don’t think there are a lot of Collins doubters out there. Skeptics is a better term of which I am one. Which is normal when you brought in a guy that hasn’t coached at this level before. Doesn’t mean I’m not optimistic and liking what he’s done so far.

Secondly he was hired specifically because he can recruit. So he’s basically doing what we hired him for. Admittedly this class is shaping up to be better than I thought it would for his first full cycle.

Ultimately he’ll need to win games. Too many examples out there of coaches recruiting well only to flop. Encouraging start so far though. And my donations will reflect that.

I think we will likely land Khatavian Franks, as well, who plays OLB alongside Tyson Meiguez at Creekside.

With the way this class is coming together, I feel confident in saying this is a kid the staff rated a lot higher than the recruiting services. His frame gives him a lot of upside, and we don’t have the room to take guys unless we really want them.

Kind of like.....Paul Johnson, when he began coaching at Tech after having coached at Georgia Southern and Navy?

to be fair, Pastner was hired because of his “recruiting”. How has that worked out. So for that reason alone I’m pumped that Collins is delivering early.

Curious of examples of guys who recruited well only to flop not at football factories.

Sure its common at factories but Im genuinely curious about top recruiting at non-factory schools not translating to wins.
