Absolutely nothing at all. But how else would they do it? Someone or something would need to be in charge and there would need to be a set of rules. I like to think a lot of the people that work in the NCAA are perfectly fine people with no ill-will towards athletes or universities. I feel like starting from scrap would at least set the clock back to a less corrupt organization.

I really dont like the NCAA but I dislike a 65 team power five even more. I love watching teams from the WAC, MWC, AAC, etc. play the big boys from the P5 and compete. If the P5 breaks away, we might as well throw the rest of FBS into the FCS division. The P5 needs these smaller conference teams.

Very few of those G5’s can compete. Either something needs to be done to put them on a more equal footing or they need to be in their own division.

I was more so saying that basic stuff like academics and paying players etc. could be ironed out in a new organization just like NCAA did when they formed. Their basic academic standards aren't really that bad they just don't enforce them / selectively enforce them to a point of absurdity.

Each sport should have its own association to set its rules, sponsor its championships and negotiate its TV rights. Yes, that increases the number of bureaucracies, but none anywhere near the size of the NCAA and the major conferences. Within each sport conferences that make competitive and economic sense can be assigned or formed. A Dallas Baptist or Cal State Fullerton are major players in baseball, Villanova and Gonzaga are basketball elites. Most minor sports need conferences to be regional to cut down travel. Why do we have to be in the same conference in all sports?

At first glance you may say it would be impossible for colleges to organize themselves in every sport apart from an overarching national body like the NCAA or without conferences that oversee all sports. But, that is exactly what club sports do. The revenue sports like football and basketball would need larger organizations because of the money involved. But, each sport would be able to organize itself to maximize efficiency, competition and marketability.

To me, the question is who's going to be doing the paying? I expect some creative accounting. If it's the University paying, then I can't wait until the Next Herschel Freshman running back is making more than the University President and the Governor combined. That should go over well. Who sets the salary budget? The Legislature? If a privately held Athletic Department is paying, then they will spin off the football operations into a separate entity. Does that eliminate Title IX since they are strictly a football operation? In that case, what is the connection to the University? Does the Private Football AD pay the University for using their name and facilities? What will "Student Athlete" even mean at that point. Would Bama wind up with competing football companies bidding for the name? The NCAA sucks, but somehow they have built a spectacle that the nation loves and makes lots of people rich.

I suspect once the NCAA loses jurisdiction, college football would immediately start paying players which would effectively kill off what we all think of as college football. Imagine the NFL with no salary cap.

I used to think the exact same thing. But the fact is paying players under the table and having inconsistent penalties applied for violating rules has killed off what we all used to think of college football.

I’m now 100% in favor of ditching the ncaa and paying the players in the light instead of the dark.

It’s not like student athlete means a lot now. Unc just got off completely for giving their players As in a class they didn’t even show up for.

BYU is another major college program that is not in a Power Five conference but has better football facilities and attendance than a number of schools that are.

Sad to say, but yeah. I care about GT sports, the Braves and that’s about it. I don’t watch many other football, baseball or basketball games. But that’s because the college game I loved is already history.

Alabama demanded a home game and a 50/50 split of the Georgia Dome. Stop being a cuck about it. It was a bad deal, unless your idea of a good deal is rolling over and letting someone have their way with you.

Do you think Alabama would let this happen? They are willing to compete at any cost, and if a for profit company would be valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. How many businesses of that size are going to roll over for a minor league?
They will compete by paying more, getting more companies and boosters to hire players for marketing reasons, etc.
In the end the new A league will dwindle down to about 32 paying teams. Tech and Wake and BC and Vandy etc will eventually disappear. I see this happening very quickly now that players are paid. But this was easy to predict when the conferences started expanding.

I think there is still enough academic snootiness at Tech to push hard for the NCAA to stay as it is.
We may see a day where the NCAA allows conferences to pay players however they choose. It’s no different today. For football the ACC lets the SEC get away with it.
