Anyone Know Our Record The Two Years After We Converted Out Of The Pepper Rodgers Wishbone?

I would not doubt it but I am pretty sure he transitioned in 1978. Pepper was actually a pretty good coach on the offensive side of the ball he just did not have the players other than ELI and a few others that were top shelf. That game in Athens in 1978, Ivery was a one man wrecking crew against UGA and they deliberately injured him and we ended up losing an exciting game. Drew Hill ran a kickoff back for a touchdown that briefly gave us a second half lead but we could not hold it. That was against a ranked UGA team that was pretty good seems they had Andy Johnson among others.
Andy was the Dwags QB for the 1971 Thanksgiving game we lost at the end 28-24, Buck Belue replaced Jeff Pyburn and was the QB for the 1978 game we lost 29-28 aided by the intentional injury to Eddie Lee

Thanks I can't keep our players straight from 40 years ago much less the dwags. Now I remember that there was a quarterback controversy at UGA in 1978 with Belue as the young guy and Pyburn was Dooly's choice as the more experienced player. I wonder if Pyburn was the quarterback in the 1977 game?

1977 That was the craziest year. We lost to Duke, Notre Dame, Navy, and South Carolina and somehow beat Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and Miami. The Notre Dame game was the infamous "Rudy" game beatdown of 69-14 followed by losing to Navy and then beating UGA soundly. How does that happen?

This. It is a horrible comparison because it had nothing to do with offensive scheme. We were at the point of eliminating football completely and you should look at 1982-85 records which thrust us into position to setup the classes at the turn of the 90s.

It has no bearing on my opinion of Collins but we were in an infinitely worse position football wise in 1980-81 than when CGC took over.
There was a lot of talk about deemphasizing football and even eliminating the program. I wonder if it was just talk or was there serious attempts to do so? The administration then hated sports I am pretty sure of that but have no idea as to how close they actually came to doing away with football.

Step 1: Be Georgia Tech
Yes, it also helped that Georgia was not that good but damn they were favored as I recall and Tech had just lost to Navy which was terrible. I was at the game and remember nothing about it except that it seemed like Tech was pretty much in control most of the way.

That 1981 win was pretty special though. Beat #2 Alabama who actually finished number 2

The game 2 weeks later was special too.

Memphis State 15-28
at home
32,000 people including ME

Memphis State finished 1-10.

has to be up there in the top 10 worst losses ever

What kind of party did Alabama have the night before our game that year?

I seem to remember that in 1978, we played wishbone the first game at Duke and lost. Didn't Pepper get knocked unconscious on the sideline by a flying headphone? We started off bad the next week against California, and Pepper put Kelly in. Kelly was a true freshman, and a passing QB. He almost brought us back. Inside of a couple of weeks, Pepper changed from a wishbone to an I formation and we won 7 straight. That damn '78 game in Athens hurt the worst of any Tech loss to me ever. I think if we win that game, uga never wins the 80 MNC. They sorta took off after that. Pepper was two plays away from being 4-1 against uga at the end of '78.

We wasted Kelly. He was the best QB in the 20 years between Kim King and Shawn Jones IMO.

Rudy game was a few years before the 69-14 ND debacle. Possibly 74 or 75.

Seems like UGA was down to a walk-on QB for one thing. I believe that was Dooley's only losing season.

Who remembers Preston Ridlehuber?

Homer Rice saved us all. He took over in 1980. Pretty bleak times, but he hauled the freight.
You sir are dead on correct! If it hadnot been for Homer Rice I truly believe Tech would not have a football now.

I seem to remember the b_ _ _ _ _ _ _ hit Eddie Lee late out of bounds!

Among other things but the leg twist was the worst from my vantage point at the top of Sanford Stadium.

Who remembers Preston Ridlehuber?
The only thing I remember about him is that he played quarterback for the dwags in the mid 1960s, maybe 1964 or so and played running back in the NFL as a backup. Seems like he was involved in the infamous "Heidi Game" in some way or another. I don't think he was all that great a quarterback but he was good enough to beat Tech.

This. Mike Kelley was in my English class that fall. We became friends due to the professor, Esta Seaton. She did not like either one of us.

No, sorry but Andy Johnson played in '72 and '73. Buck Belue was Ugay's QB in the '78 heartbreaker. Edit: I see that has already been corrected now.

Ridlehuber played against Billy Lothridge in the 63-64 time period and Lothridge was the man so we beat the dawgs when he played. He finished 2nd to Roger Staubach for the Heisman his senior year. He was an all-star punter in the NFL but only played a little at safety in the league because he only had 1 good kidney.

Actually, and I say this only for accuracy, Bama was #2 when we played them and I believe they finished 7th. At least in the AP.
Bama was #2 when we played them, but the #1 team had already lost that day. So I claim we beat Bama when they were #1.

Bama choked in the Cotton Bowl against Texas they were up 12-0 with like 9 minutes to go in the game. Had they won they would have been #2 behind Clemson.
