Greatest transition in history... Of penalties

...

I also absolute despise this statement towards the end, " The Jackets won’t ever have as many good players as the ACC’s top programs." It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's tacitly encouraging the best local players to go elsewhere by implying that Georgia Tech isn't big boy football, and makes me want to punch him in the face. It's not going to happen overnight, but we've already seen improvement and there's no reason we can't at least recruit competitively with the best of them if we put focus on it.

Despicable, but a lot of sports people in metro Atlanta without doggie ties believe it. And Dave Braine governed with that assumption. Norm Arey was SID with that assumption. (I believe that part of the reason Johnson was hired (and Tenuta as DC before him) was the belief by management that GT needed a gimmick to win.)

Collins is the only one I know who has actively challenged it. It resulted in the 2007 class, and then Saban bought him for his methodology. He is actively challenging it again. Based on his 2007 results and the Orange Bowl with those players, I think we owe it to him to try it that way again for a while.

I got my popcorn ready and just sitting back enjoying reading the justification of why Tech is so much more penalized than in the past.

I don't know, just maybe Tech has a disproportionate number of young, undisciplined players than they had when CPJ was here.
Bingo. And with nobody on the field having more than two years under the system there isn't the veterans out there helping direct and correct. (Two years is extremely deceptive too, because with no bowl practice, no spring practice, and an abbreviated and chopped up fall schedule, we have been behind the 8-ball trying to get the team up to speed on wtf they are supposed to be doing.)

I mentioned in a previous thread that I actually really liked Collins' statement after the game. I think his statements were intended to send a message to his players. I'd have to go back and look at the exact wording, but recollection of the message is: "Yes, those were bad calls. It's not something we can control, we have to ensure that the margin is wide enough between us an our opponent so that the bad calls can't be the difference."

TL:DR - I disagree with Cunningham on this point.

I do agree about the false starts and the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties (like spinning the ball in the end zone, for which there is no excuse).

The only reason would be continuing to lose and look bad doing it, as we have for 2 years, which is understandable except for the hype/circus. October/November 2021 will tell the tale, and no I'm not talking about wins, I'm talking about not looking bad in the losses. Recruits know the diff. THAT will impact recruiting which will determine almost everything. Sorry, but Cunningham was right, in that he mainly just listed facts.

I think Collins is trying to get our players to be more aggressive. I like this approach even if it does result in a few late hit penalties. Every team from UGA to Clemson to ND must know we will not be intimidated. However, the taunting penalties need to stop. As for the refs, the only one who needs to be talking to them is Collins. It is important that he stick up for our players, even if he has to completely blow up every once in a while and draw a penalty.

It’s a coaching problem. Lack of discipline culture. Look at the Citadel game For a great example. It’s not the players being out matched.

The fact is the truth hurts. We have WAY too many penalties esp the 15 yd personal fouls. When you are a team with avg talent that kind of crap will kill you--er,see 3 wins. It needs to improve and could be a one of the barriers to good yrs.

I get the feeling that Collins is ok with penalties as long as they come from the team having some swagger. The problem we are all having is that the swagger is coming before the success and the penalties are therefore pissing us all off.

very few of us would likely care if we acted like 80s Miami or 90s FSU as long as we were whipping ass regularly. The problem is that we are getting the dumb personal fouls without stomping on peoples heads.

I won't argue that we've had way too many penalties and that 100% needs addressing, but that has to be about one of the most ridiculous, one-sided articles I've seen from the AJC, and that's saying something.
Cunningham is a bum and he's ruffling feathers to get some attention. I doubt he even watched much tech football this year.

That's a good point. Which reminds me, spring should be exciting. Hope they allow fans to get to see some of it.

Someone get it to the top that we should do some sort of VR of practice/scrimmage for fans that want to watch. Maybe just a few drives or something at the least.
