In an alternate universe, when Ross left, the job was then given to O'Leary. When O'Leary left, the job was given to Friedgen. When Fridegen left, the job was given to Johnson. I want to live in that universe.

Meh, every time someone drops a Clemson coordinator's name as a potential head coaching candidate I remember how much every team's fanbase wanted Chad Morris five years ago.
As if that one example applies to every Clemson assistant coach.
If I thought he'd make a good HC simply because he was an assistant at Clemson, you'd have a point.

The real concerns are --the penalties and lack of discipline that implies -and- the FG kicking game is almost beyond believable it is so bad--both areas are near the worst in WHOLE country
Everything else is expected--to me.

It is interesting to consider what may have happened if O'Leary had recognized the toxic wasteland of South Bend and stayed here. But I also don't think any force on Earth was going to keep Ralph from going to Maryland.

Getting flashbacks now. 2000, we were good enough to beat anybody in the nation. 2001, still the biggest disappointment of my time as a Tech fan. And Friedgen was on the wrong sideline for the most soul-crushing moment of that season.

edit: Forgot to mention, öööö Notre Dame.

Agreed. But I was right there when Carpenter got the personal foul in the Pitt game. That foul came from a place of frustration and lack of being competitive for the last 3 seasons. I’ve been critical of his play but I could see his eyes as I sat right behind the Pitt bench and he basically thought to himself “why not”. I kind of felt the same way. I gotta believe Collins overall plan will be successful, but I’m still just numb that 2019 was a total waste (other than recruiting) because we didn’t have a QB. But that’s all in the past.

alternate history:

O’Leary leaves after 2000. Fridge takes over and doesn’t jump ship after 1 year. BOB takes over. BOB goes pro. James Franklin takes over. Franklin leaves for a bigger job and former GA/assistant John Donovan or maybe still former GA/Assistant Geoff Collins takes over.

You forget. In the alternate universe I call the brightest timeline... Assistant Coach Spurrier was given the job when Pepper left... and Bud Carson was our permanent defensive coordinator.

We may yet be the brightest timeline. It all depends on whether the Hundred Year Prophecy is being fulfilled. If it is, then a babe was born in Galax, VA in 2008. In 2028, he will begin his ministry Knoxville, departing there in 2030. And lo, in 2031 he will return to Atlanta in power and glory. Bearing in his left hand, the key to a full cupboard given unto him by Geoff the Baptist. And in his right, the battle axe.

We may have had as much coaching talent as uga has had athletic talent. We wasted quite a bit of it, but not as much as uga.

Very valid concerns. It comes down to what is the primary message and what is secondary. The Collins philosophy is maximum effort, create mayhem and look for disruptive plays. Of course they’re taught not to commit penalties but not at the expense of playing tentative. Most of our players are still quite young. The game will “slow down” as they get more experience and they won’t make so many mistakes.

FG kicking was just bizarrely bad. I have no idea what was up with that. It’s not like they didn’t practice it.

I choose not to rule that out, because it's the only imaginable logical explanation. We've only just cleared 2020 by a fourth full day, and I am not ready to introduce things like ghosts and ayys and ancient curses to my life right now.

The OL was not young and had a ton of penalties, including dead ball flags.

I think Collins is still the right hire. I just want to see improvement with our offense-Sims or whoever at QB, defense getting 3 and outs, and stop making dumb penalties. All fixable! The talent is coming.

The kicking is unbelievably bad but it's been bad ever since Butker left. You can say what you will about what kind of players were left over by CPJ but people don't seem to remember how bad our kicking game had been even the last couple years of Johnson's tenure. Has it gotten worse? Yes somehow but I don't really see the kicking game as necessarily a position "you coach up." You either have a kicker who can kick it into the endzone or you don't. You either have a kicker who can take the pressure of a game time kick or you don't. What is alarming is that we didn't get some kind of transfer to address this. I know we don't offer a scholarship yet to a place kicker but to expect them just to improve over the off season is wishful thinking.

FG kicking post Butker has been an F.

Why do people keep saying this?

In his final year (2016) Butker made 88.2% of his kicks.

In 2017, we made 70% of our FG's, and in 2018, we made 76.9% of our kicks. (And once we gave up on King we didn't miss one the rest of the year.)

In 2019 we made 37.5% of our FG's (dead last among 130 teams), and continued at that same pace in 2020 (though this year that was good for 123d out of 127 teams). And these drastically low numbers are despite the fact that we didn't even attempt anything other than pure gimmes.

Kicking under CGC has been historically bad. I'm kind of surprised no one's put together a YouTube montage of our ten missed FG's in the past two years, accompanied by funny sound effects and 'aw shucks' from the announcers.

I assumed your brightest timeline yet was an undead Heisman scowling from the sidelines and Tweeting Shakespeare quotes and murder threats for fumbling.

The next few years are going to be our Rubicon. Either Collins will be hired at a super big P5 because he made us into a powerhouse or this experiment has become a bust.

Yeah I'm just going by what I remember and yeah Wells would be nine for nine when I look back but you can manipulate numbers to make them sound good. Yeah we were 70% in FG's made in 2017 but you know how many that was? 7. We made seven field goals in 2017. That shows you right there the confidence CPJ had in our kicking game.

Yes, we will find out if the experiment we started Dec 7, 2007 will be a huge bust.
