Collins report card

CGC has had 2 very unusual seasons as GT’s head ball coach:

1. Transitioning out of the 3O altogether.
2. Shortened season littered with Covid issues and injuries.

I think his report card starts to count at the end of next season and more importantly, the year after. This has truly been the most bizarre first 2 years any coach has ever dealt with. And he’s still getting us NFL talent.
 
All the other coaches had to deal with Covid too.

In truth, the whole "covid year doesn't count against eligibility" rule should probably help us.

I understand your logic. But, I must say our fan base has certainly mellowed since the Gailey era. Giving someone four seasons before accountability begins is quite gracious. Some pretty good coaches here and other places would have liked such a gracious spirit.
 
If we don’t win 6 next year I strongly suspect he’s gone after 2022
Collins team was good enough and could have easily won 6 games this year in a regular 12 game non-covid season .

How? Just like all the other mediocre P5 teams do - schedule four creampuffs and win 3 or 4 of the conference games.

Even if you ööööup one of the pushovers you get 3 wins, win 3 of 8 against the super strong ACC slate. It's magic, you get to six wins and go to a bowl. Everybody is happy. We're a winning team, hoorah.

I think the recruits can see through the bogus scheduling. Everyone says play the toughest schedule you can, well then you can't expect miracles if you don't play the game like everybody else does. Tech refuses to do things the easy way so you have to grade a little bit on the curve. It just might take 6 or 7 years to get there instead of 4 or 5 years like other teams give their coaches. I think 5 wins next year will keep the momentum going for recruiting. If we just want the most wins possible and highest rankings in the polls, just schedule like most do.

Kansas St and Baylor consistently schedule creampuffs. Wins are wins. Of course, we have UGa locked in, so our creampuff schedule only goes up to three.

As does Virginia Tech, Duke, etc. VPI lives off of 8-4 (5-3 or 4-4) type seasons. Helps to maintain some prestige and get better bowls even when they are extremely mediocre.

In addition to uga, we've got Clemson as a permanent crossover and a contractual obligation to play ND every so often.

I don't think 6 wins is a miracle against next years schedule by any stretch. You can throw UGA and Clemson out. So go 6-4 over the rest.

Unless Notre Dame has a lot of seniors return for another year they are going to have massive starter losses. UNC loses some key playmakers and had a godawful defense this year. The rest of the ACC is trash and we have NIU and Kennesaw State OOC and should win both.

And Duke. They’ve gone to a couple of bowls with 3-5 ACC records.

Other schools didn't have to retool after switching from the TO. There's a reason for the grace period. If we were just simply coaches I'm sure CGC would of gotten the old 5 year standard contract.
 
You know what doesn’t really get mentioned...even by us GT/triple option fans?...

Even when we were pretty dang good (2016 - we went 3-0 against the SEC East), finished with 9 total wins, and still didn’t even get ranked by the AP or Coaches Poll.

It’s just not very popular I guess. CPJ would have destroyed everyone if we could have got him the recruits in here. He’s the only guy in the Biz who I’d trust to pull it off (not Monken, not Niamatololo, the Air Force guy, etc).

IMO, we were damn lucky to have Paul Johnson here. No one else’s version of the option would have as big an impact. The man could flat-out coach a football game.

But it’s over. Don’t be so dang bitter about it, folks!

I loved the option and Paul running it. He just needed to keep the QB pipeline stocked with above average option QB and recruit a little better on the defensive side (players and coordinators). With an outstanding QB and mid level D you would be right.

I hear you, and my way of managing money is out of synch with the professionalization of college sports. But given he was coming as a non P5 HC, I would have offered 5 years with auto extension based on x wins in years 4 and 5. Doesn’t mean you’re fired for fewer wins, just means we’ll need to talk about it. It’s a way of communicating expectations. Also way of managing money vs it somehow growing on trees while doing these payouts for failed coaches. Ok so GT is your dream job, you’ll take that offer.

The real question is who else was interested? The contract may have been a combination of giving the new guy time to adjust and making sure we got the guy TStan wanted in the end. Other than Wiz I don’t remember anyone else who seemed particularly interested.

Auburn would still have Tuberville with that standard! Converting from the TO was more like a heart stent operation (serious) vs brain surgery (extremely serious). Late Oct-mid Nov. 2021 will tell us plenty about the coaching element of the transition, which I expect will be much improved over our last 2 seasons, or his 2 at Temple for that matter. Fifth year as HC starts to tell the tale, even with a tough transition.

Maybe, I wasn’t close to it. Seems like part of the AD role is to sell the situation and foster interest vs managing out of desperation. Maybe that was impossible. So you think Collins would turn down his first P5 HC opportunity over 5 vs 7 years? Again, my thought was 5 plus renewal based on metrics.
I’m not a whale donor to GT, low 6 figures to engineering school. I’m happy with how they’ve spent that money.
I realize college sports now routinely involves financial deals that make no sense to me. The universities take all the risk, P5 HCs are practically set for life with one contract.
