Nathan Burton is the Co-Defensive Coordinator. Anybody have an insight on whether he might be an improvement?

The fact that this thread is so much shorter than the Patenaude one is indicative of how ignorant our fans are.

Thacker has shown zero signs that suggest he can coach a defense.
Agreed. P-nut's scheme at least gets WRs wide-F-open on occasion, we just don't have a QB who can throw.

Conversely, Thacker schemes failed badly at generating QB pressure, covering WRs, nor generating TOs, this against one of the worst teams in football.

In looking at our coaches, there are several anomalies.

1) Our offensive and defensive coordinators have no experience at the Power 5 level prior to Tech. That is no experience as an assistant for any position group not just as a coordinator.
2) Key, Dixon and Wiesehan are the only assistants on the staff that have prior experience as an assistant for a position group at the Power 5 level.
3) Every assistant has multiple responsibilities. Splitting the corners and safeties across two coaches puzzles me because they are normally interchangeable depending on the defensive alignment.

I do not think this is normal for a Power 5 program and I think it explains some of our issues.

We had ZERO sacks vs a team #100 in nation that won 2 games last yr. --running a 4-2-5 "attack" defense--nuff said
What was that extra DB in Roof's 4-2-5 called again?

Maybe it wasn't roof. I remember Cooper Taylor playing that position specifically

"4-2-5 Effort Based" sounds really cool when you're not letting NIU shove you backwards with their nutsacks like a road grader for an 8-pt game winner.

But it sounds trite and stupid after letting NIU shove you backwards with their nutsacks like a road grader for an 8-pt game winner.

i didn’t think the defense could get any worse than it did under CPJ but somehow we’ve managed to both get larger and get softer. The second half adjustments were decent but the o line play and zero response to up tempo means it’s the end of the road for Thacker. His system won’t work at P5 when he has to call in the plays from the sideline Al Groh style and he’s trying to sub in players while the other team is rolling

I thought CGCs calling card was defense.. we’re up 7 in the last minutes of the 4th. Stop them and it’s over.. and they can’t get it done against NIU.. completely pathetic.

he should completely hand the offensive reigns over to patendude and focus on defense alone.. we aren’t gonna light anyone up with throwing ability nor run the option and rush 300 yards either

This is the answer. Throw Patenaude in the deep end with the offense and he either swims or he sinks and we fire him. Collins needs to focus his energy on defense because Thacker isn’t getting it done and the defense looks soft.

Collins is already coaching the defensive backs

Would that even help the issue of slow calling in stuff from the sidelines on defense?

Collins seems focused on looking at what the percentage sheets tell him instead of the game

For some reason (apparently my own stupidity), the softness of the defense surprises me every time. I think we need less show and more assholes on D.
