Updated after North Carolina win! Maybe, Just Maybe Coach Collins is going to get us back in the "National Conversation" like he promised during his introductory press conf. For that to happen this year we must win at home vs Pitt and keep rolling with a win vs Duke. I must say I am excited for the first time in a while. Go Jackets!

After UNI I was ready to call it a loss and start over. The improvement we've seen since then is hopefully parallel to the first part of 1989 when things started clicking under Ross. I'm willing to give it time since we've seen a dramatic uptick in recruiting and now notable improvement since the first game.

CGC can gain a lot of people over to his hypey side if we continue to play like the last 2 weeks.

It’s a lot easier to be optimistic if we’re not looking disorganized and undisciplined. Arguing about a scheme here and there or who’s getting more carries, etc is a lot different than we don’t even know what the öööö we’re doing.

O’Leary peaked in ‘98 at 10-2, he left us at 7-5, you know starting the whole Chan 7 win circle of suck streak. You could argue O’Leary had us on a downhill slide and ol’ Chan got us straight and level, producing remarkable consistency year over year.
With some of the best talent we've had in the last few decades....

Yeah, 7-5, 10-2, 8-4, 9-3, 8-5, clearly a downhill slide. :crazy2:

Roster is still transitioning but it's getting there. We're seeing flashes of the future now

It all hinges on the next 3 weeks. Here’s where we see if the coaching staff is growing up or stuck in their terrible preparation ways. UNC basically admitted they didn’t practice against an RPO style offense run by Sims.

I think the defense will keep us in every game.

Georgia Tech Football has had six Head Coaches since 1987. Below is how they stack up against eacher other.

Rankings By Total Wins
83-60 - Paul Johnson
53-33 - George O'Leary
44-32 - Chan Gailey
31-26 - Bobby Ross
11-19 - Bill Lewis
08-18 - Geoff Collins

Rankings By Total Win %
.612 - George O'Leary
.580 - Paul Johnson
.579 - Chan Gailey
.543 - Bobby Ross
.367 - Bill Lewis
.307 - Geoff Collins

Coaching Awards & Best Seasons
1990 - Bobby Ross - Natty, ACC Coach of the year (Bobby Dodd COY, Sporting News COY, Walter Camp COY, AFCA COY)
1992 - Bill Lewis - 4 wins in league play and beat two top 25 teams (Clemson and NC State)
1998 - Georgia O'leary - Gator Bowl win, ACC Coach of the year (Also won ACC Coach of the year in 2000)
2006 - Chan Gailey - Loss ACC Championship game
2009 & 2014 - Paul Johnson ACC Title (Later revoked) & Orange Bowl Win - ACC Coach of the year both years (also ACC COY in 2008)
2021- Geoff Collins - Upset top 25 North Carolina team
Give Geoff time, he may or may not turn around the win % and total wins. After all, if Coach Ross were judged by his first two years...well, that would be approaching Bill Lewis territory. Could be worse...we might have Manny who last night was compared cruelly by a learned Miami fan to the mildly retarded, gullible, half wit character Lenny from John Steinbeck's novel "Of Mice and Men".

The predilection for historical GT coach comparisons on ST is, to be honest, a little odd to me.
Here’s a synopsis: We’ve had one really bad coach, the rest were often or even mostly good but not perfect, our previous coach retired and isn’t coming back, our current coach is tbd but we’re hopeful since we’ve got him for at least a couple years.
Did I miss anything?

Hopeful may be too strong for many. Wishing may be more on target.

Otherwise, I think you got it.

I know this is TIC, but the idea of Tech fans who weren't around getting the wrong idea about those last four years is really grinding my gears. We definitely under-performed in 1999 because of our garbage defense but before we lost Friedgen to Maryland, the 2000 team was good enough to compete with anyone in the country. In 2001, it took the worst terrorist attack in history, four days before we would have ended the Florida State football program, to disrupt our destiny to be national champions.

Yes it was TIC, but the reality was O’leary and Fridge together were a powerful team. GT should have done all they could to retain them, albeit might not have been possible. GT’s also has been plagued historically with inopportune events outside our control- pandemic, hurricanes, lightning, terrorist attacks, etc.
