Anyone else think that if we don't have something good to show by the end of 2010, other ACC teams will simply drown us out with talent in the coming years? I'm not saying there's a big chance but seeing how other teams are recruiting has got me worried. Any more seasoned fans got any comments?

This is kind of a "pro" Tech board. You may want to try Buzzoff for the gloom and doom room.

Please give us a break.

I'm not being pessimistic, I'm asking the guys who've followed college football for 10+ years, along with everyone else, if we're gona have problems in the ACC if we can't keep up in the recruiting.

If you are basing your post on "recruiting rankings" then I understand your point. However, as CPJ says "Ranking kids with stars is a bunch of crap". There is too much biased data that goes into the rankings. Also, we now recruit for a system, which means we are going to take players that "factory" schools aren't even going to look at...especially on offense. The last point is that we have to recruit players that can make the grade at Tech. They may not always be the strongest or fastest, but we should never have "assignment problems" with the caliber "students" we recruit.

p.s. We haven't had a better recruiting class than Miami or Clemson since '04. We are 8-2 the past 5 years against them. Recruiting rankings are way overrated.

Hmm true, but I'm also worried about UNC. Actually here's something I wonder. What was Tebows' recruit ranking thing.

You're either being pessimistic or you haven't paid attention to recruiting for very long. We will not be drowned out by other ACC teams in the talent department. Plus, you'll need to point out to me where we aren't keeping up in recruiting.

No I haven't been following recruiting for long. I'm a recent fan in fact. Hence the whole thing about asking the opinion from people who have been following it long.

We have never outrecruited...and never will. We did not before our national title in 1990 either.

We had our best class ever with a Top 20 in 2007....and may have our second best ever this year with around a 25. We typically finish around 50 or so.

So...as long as we are Top 30 every year and get a few playmakers on each side to go along with a "team" of players....then we will be fine.

....and I have followed recruiting closely since the early 80's.

There are only so many spots to gain playing time. If you don't get playing time you'll generally not develop. I'm not sure what having more extra guys on the bench would get us.

I'm not sure I understand how anybody could extrapolate a trend that we are heading downward in recruiting.

Don't forget the more important part of the equation--coaching. UNC and CU and Miami have outrecruited us routinely (except for '07) and our record versus those 3 is fantastic.

Adding in classes in the 25 to 30 range consistently w/this staff will yield a lot of wins for GT. The guys selling the recruiting porn on the 'net miss more than enough to make any of the rankings outside of the Top 5 or so a crapshoot between classes 10-25, IMO.

I think that VT has a really good coaching staff. I think that GT's is much better than UNC, Miami, CU, UVA or Dook's. Depending upon how Wommack does this season, ours may be as good as VT's.

The ACC is about to go on a heck of a run I do believe. Yes, talent matters and it is something to be concerned about. But we pull our talent from the #4 most talented state in the country. UNC and Clemson do not. Miami and FSU do and their talent has never changed over the years. But we are 4-0 in the last 3 years against those two. I do believe that Virginia state talent is better than most think so VPI is always a problem even though their classes are never highly ranked.

California has 250 recruits feeding a slew of schools.
Florida has 225 recruits feeding three, now fourish schools.
Texas has 225 recruits feeding 8 schools.
Georgia has 125 recruits feeding 2 schools.
La has 70 recruits feeding 2 schools.

South Carolina has 25 recruits feeding 2 schools.
North Carolina has 50 recruits feeding 5 schools.
Maryland has 25 recruits feeding 1 school.

Who are the real powerhouses in football:
USC, plenty of 5 star recruits to pick from (until somebody starts really playing football in the state).
Texas, plenty of 5 star recruits to pick from.
Florida/FSU/Miami, plenty of 5 star recruits to pick from.
LSU, plenty of their own.
GT/UGA Plenty to pick from as long as they keep them away from the other schools. As Tech rises, Auburn, Clemson, USCe, UT will all fall.
VPI picks from a solid state.

Ohio State and Penn State have to go out of their state to get speed, Michigan occassionally.

Without going further, my point is that Georgia Tech is uniquely situated to pick up plenty of recruits in state as well as plenty from Florida. We could play with the big boys again IF the state continues to generate academically talented football players.

In my humble opinion, this issue is going to get better and better. Additionally, PJ is known as a winner in the state and the country and has lots of built up respect in this state. I'm no worried about UNC's talent. We have to play the best to become the best anyway.

If we don't make it to an ACC CG within the next 2 years, then I am sure some GT fans will be disappointed ... I know I will.

Guys, the real PJ effect won't be felt until next years class. This class is a clean slate, since they only see a 9-4 Tech team that beat UGA, FSU, Miami, Clemson and BC. That one will rival the 2007 class, once we pull in Denzel McCoy, Anthony Williams, and Mack Brown. These guys are absolute studs on the same level as Dwyer.

We're doing just fine. This year's class will be very good. We have good coaches and as soon as we get some adequate depth we can redshirt more players. Unlike UGA, most of our good players will be here for the full four (or five) years. There presently are areas for coaching improvement such as special teams and I am confident that will happen pronto.

Chin up. Things are looking good.

Yeah, I think if we can handle FSU and Miami we'll probably go to the ACC CG. Everyone else we play at home (and two of the we lost to in a way that our players probably regret) and if you look back, we in some way embarrassed everyone we played at Bobby Dodd with the exception of one. This includes FSU, who's defense got humbled for 2 and half quarters. If we can play at our level and get a good home crowd I can see us having only 2 ACC losses.

This class seems on par with our typical classes of the past 10 to 15 years. We've had a lot of winning seasons and bowl trips recruiting classes like this.

Hmm true, but I'm also worried about UNC. Actually here's something I wonder. What was Tebows' recruit ranking thing.

He was very highly recruited. I'm originally from Alabama, and the Tiders were chompin' at the bit to get Tebow. In fact, they thought they had him in the bag till the day he announced he would be attending Florida.

Here's his Rivals page. http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=31436

5-star recruit. #1 overall QB in that class as ranked by Rivals. 6.1 overall rating...which is freaking ridiculous.

By the way, I also think stars tend to be over-heeded these days. I like the fact that GT attracts high-character guys. They tend to be more hard-working and knowledgeable about the game.
