Realistic expectations

Recruiting was down, but we didn't want to fund it. I can't put all of that on CPJ when he kept asking for support he wasn't getting. CGC got the funding, and I'll give him credit for landing some big names, but there are systemic issues that are bigger than the baggage of the triple option. I think a lot of fans overestimate the issues with that offense and underestimate the benefits. Not that it's a cure-all, but the results can't be disputed and if you don't want to repeat the current woes I think we need a long, honest look at what is ailing us now.

The trashing of our own program history and success by our own fans continues on down the road. In a food truck, of course.
Agreed. Going away from the option was understood to be painful but people still can't help themselves over the past three years. You'd think grown men could control their emotions better

Does everyone agree that we should run an offense that gives us the best chance for success (as measured by wins and losses)?

Probably not. I think most here would prefer to see a 15 win season and two winless seasons over three 6 win seasons.

I'd prefer to see a defense that gives us the best chance for success. Do that and the offense style/type won't matter.

The vast majority of the success we had with the TO occurred the 1st half of Paul Johnson’s career at GT. That’s because 1. There was an element of surprise. Defenses weren’t prepared for it and 2. Johnson was playing with Gailey’s recruits.

Those 2 things changed.

Teams were also scheduling other 3O teams and scheduling a bye week before playing us to prepare. Now I doubt any team even bothers to gameplan for us.

2014 -2016 teams were better than 2008-2010 teams. Each 3 year era was defined by the QB running the offense. We never had a 4th guy which is mainly why we struggled.

This nonsense about gaileys recruits is easily disproven as we were very successful after they were all gone.

DCs knew our offense at a high level by year 3. I don't buy the element of surprise being a factor past then.

So… UGAg didn’t just show that this season?

Based on FEI

2021 - ugg #3 off, #1 def
2020 - bama #1 off, #20 def
2019 - lsu #1 off, #8 def
2018 - clem #5 off, #2 def
2017 - bama #8 off, #2 def
2016 - clem #3 off, #7 def
2015 - bama #20 off, #1 def
2014 - osu #3 off, #13 def (GT had #2 off that year)
2013 - fsu #1 off, #1 def
2012 - bama #3 off, #1 def

It's a lot closer than I thought it would be TBH. It seems that you're correct that a stellar defense can carry a good offense, but it seems that you're more likely to achieve success with a stellar offense.

Dafuq's it matter? We ain't got either.

That’s just silly. Win OB, miss bowl, win bowl, miss bowl, losses bowl. We were erratic, but nothing near impossible.

If you want a restaurant metaphor, we had an Chili’s under Gailey, we switched to a hibachi under Johnson, but we wanted to be a Brazilian Steakhouse so we gutted the place. Collins has gone 3 years selling salad. Nobody goes to a steakhouse for salad.
It's funny you mention Salad at the Steakhouse. I'm sure TStan is a huuuuge fan of the tossed one GC is serving

Very true. I’ll bet most teams spend little to no time preparing to play us. I’ll bet the vast majority of teams start getting ready for the game after us following week.

No doubt. And we'll probably play more homecoming games than anyone this year.

Defense isn't winning games anymore. Even saban knows this.
But defense is damn sure losing them. CPJ always struggled to field a top defense. Had he done so, even the TO would have made us perennial Top 20. CGC wouldn't be on a death if his defense was as close to the top of the rankings as it has been to the bottom. Give either one a D that ranks in the top 20-25 year over year and no one will care what type of offense we run.

Nah, people would still öööö a brick if it was the TO because they are more interested in recruiting rankings and number of players drafted than wins on gameday.

GT off FEI rankings
2021 - 78
2020 - 92
2019 - 94
2018 - 19
2017 - 23
2016 - 29
2015 - 78
2014 - 2
2013 - 33
2012 - 15
2011 - 13
2010 - 61
2009 - 2
2008 - 31

CGC would be verging on death regardless of our defense because our offense is so poor. But I agree that a consistent top 40 defense would've made GT top 20 every year under CPJ.
