CPJ on Aycock

You know I agree with you on this one... How is visiting the school any different from calling them up asking for papers? Especially if you talk to the media about it... The optimist in me thinks that the AJC cockgobblers* helped facilitate all of this by trying to make more out of the story than there really was.

*by cockgobblers I mean the types who write articles titled "Georgia did to GT what GT did to them in recruiting"

The only way to rationalize it to me, is to anticipate how it is perceived by future recruits. Under what I will call the "Dont be an Aycock Rule," If you are a future recruit, you know that if you visit another school after you commit to GT, you may lose your offer. It is a very easy rule to follow.

If CPJ had done something similar to Hill, it gets a little murky. At that point, as a recruit, you don't know what is allowed and what is not allowed. Are you allowed to entertain phone calls? There is too much subjectivity.

It's actually very simple. If you commit, you can't go visit anyone else. Don't commit if you think you may want to visit others...

On the one hand - this is a very simple rule that I can live with as it should cut down on the drama... On the other hand, I do like having some comfort in knowing we have a stud athlete on lockdown early. This was my first time following recruiting and will probably be the last time too.

I don't mind this policy at all. I understand the view of letting a player make his decision without pressure. I also believe that a SA doesn't have the right to accept offers and keep them.......unless something better comes up. There are many kids who deserve a scholly, so if they want to look around then do it w/out stalling on a commitment.

Where did you see this? Per Scout, Aycock has not signed a LOI (they are delayed on their reporting of course).

My mistake. I thought the scout list I was looking at was a signed list, but apparently it's a commit list and the signed column is not checked for DA.

I've never heard CPJ say this was a policy, just that he expects kids to commit when they are sure and to stick to it. In Dontae's case, he told him a visit would cost a scholly, and he went anyway.

Guys every kid and every kid's discussion are specific to that kid. Clearly Aycock's commitment meant that we dropped another athlete/quarterback. So Aycock didn't just screw Tech, he screwed the next recruit behind him too. That's why you have to relay the message clearly that your commitment means a commitment.

That I know of, Hill didn't have any other WR waiting for his ship, for example. Each case is always going to be different. PJ was apparently clear with DA on this issue and that is the only thing that matters.

I wish DA well, but personally I think he made a mistake.

I'm speculating on the silent part here, but it is true that Aycock was a silent commit. I think this was probably at the urging of his brother who wanted to ensure that Aycock continued to get recruited by other schools in hopes of the factory offer.

So Dontae gives his silent to GT. GT accepts it and goes with it giving him the understanding of what that commitment means. Auburn comes a calling, big bro tells Auburn that he won't visit unless there is a sure fire offer on the table. Auburn offers. aycock visits. GT cuts their ties.

This is probably very very close to the truth knowing what Aycock's recruitment was like. Poor kid got pimped out by the older brother he trusted. Hope Auburn works out for him.

What different does it make if the kid goes on a visit (Aycock) or holds court at his house (Hill) for another suitor. To use the girlfriend analogy, is it any worse for your girlfriend to mess around with someone else at her place or his place.

Hill was considering signing with UGA yesterday. From the sound of things, Hill was much more likely to decommit than Aycock.

Have another team's entire coaching staff over to your house, call them the day before signing day to say your still interested, and even though your committed don't make a final decision until signing day morning, but whatever you do don't go on a visit because then I might think that you were having second thoughts about your commitment. Give me a break.

O'Leary had the same viewpoint.

Personally, I like this way of thinking. It fits in with the discipline and commitment the coaches ask of our players--are you buying in or not? It's consistent with PJ's personality--I'll be straight with you, but you have to be straight with me.

We lost a good player, but we are building a solid TEAM.

IMO, Aycock was going to Auburn anyway because of his brother.

That's my take on it.

Oh well. Lets hope Jordan is better anyway.

There is a difference here. Aycock went and visited Auburn because he wanted to, he decided he want to look elsewhere. Hill was happy as a clam at GT until Georgia came to him. It is one thing to have doubts because another school starts actively recruiting you all of a sudden (Hill), it's another thing to go another school on your own looking for a better place (Aycock).

That's my take on it.

Oh well. Lets hope Jordan is better anyway.

Honestly I got a feeling that might be true.

I really don't understand why this is so difficult for some of you to grasp. The UGA coaches came to Stephen Hill's school NOT his house to make him a pitch. He listened to it and said no thanks. He turned down his visit. Hill cannot help what UGA coaches do, he can help what he does. Which is why he did not go visit UGA.

I'm sure the same deal was in place. PJ told him if he made the visit, that GT would rescind the offer.

Aycock was committed to us too albeit silently and when Auburn came calling and offered him a scholarship he went to visit the school. PJ also told him the deal. He went anyway knowing what the repercussions were.

So had we not rescinded the offer which was the right thing to do in my opinion, how do you think that goes over with Stephen Hill? PJ draws a line in the sand of giving his word. He never onced flinched at it. His policy was what led us to keep Hill but we lost Aycock.

So, would you rather have your girlfriend talk to another guy about going out with him and then think about it, or talk to him about it and then go on a trip with the other guy for a long weekend?

They are not the same thing. Nor were other circumstances surrounding their recruitments the same.

Also, Aycock went and visited Auburn without so much as informing our coaches about it. Does that change your opinion?

According to the AJC article, Stephen Hill called UGA and invited them to send their paperwork over:

Hill said he called UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner on Monday.
“He was very surprised to hear from me,” said Hill, who is rated the No. 24 receiver nationally by Rivals. “He said, ‘Wow, I’m glad you called. We still want you, and you should have the scholarship papers to sign.’

That's a lot different than how you stated it.

For a moment there I was tempted to use the word "integrity" in my comment, but then thought better of it... very very silly of me, particularly in respect to the recruiting circus.....

CPJ, in my opinion, did precisely the right thing...

and I wonder how DA will like being a redshirt safety come the start of next season.... maybe his brother can advise him about that too
