Oh Good Lord (MNC Squawk)

It's ABSOLUTELY premature.

They win nine games and think they're the ****.

Wrong. Nothing has been proved.

Ken Swilling, et al, were talking MNC after a 7-4 season......then went out and won it.

I like the attitude.

I agree. You have to set your sights high.

But, it's premature for any team, including Florida, Texas, etc. to talk MNC.

I would say "let's worry about Jax. St.," but that just won't motivate the same way.

This is only a problem if guys think they're there and that they don't have to continue to work hard. There is nothing wrong with setting your sights high as long as you realize what it takes to accomplish it.

Why don't you recommend to the players that they chant 10-3 instead?

I think what they are getting at is that if you think like a champ, talk like a champ, play like a champ and win like a champ, then you will be champs.

You may not become a champ by thinking like one but you most certainly won't if you don't.

Set your sights high but also set goals that are within your control. GT can win all of its games and still not play in the BCS national championship game. That's the only problem I have with it.

Also, setting goals of an ACC championship and beating UGA are pretty high considering we haven't done both in over 10 years.

You gotta set goals to get to them. The number one goal last year was to beat Georgia. Perhaps it's time to step it up. The team can have high hopes anyway, but they'll need to remember that they need to play well to get there.

If Tech wins all of their games, their are going to the BCS championship game. Remember when BC and USF were ranked high? Yes Auburn, but they tweaked the formula since then.

Auburn would still not have made it. They were ranked #3 in both polls. Now that the polls are 2/3 of the equation if they reach a concensus then the computer polls do not mean anything.

As much as this pains me, think of Duke while their hoops program was on top. The goal was not to win the acc, or even make the sweet 16. Their goal was to win the whole damn thing!

Our program should think like winners, it may not pan out, but it sure as hell beats the mentality of 7-5 is ok as long as we beat Georgia. Think BIG men, think BIG.

I like the idea of keeping your eyes on the horizon but make each step of the way sure. Each and every step is vitally important in a competitive arena. First things first. Practice, discipline, focus.

Keep your eyes on the horizon AND the football, stomp some major ass like you REALLY want something, one step at a time, and you might just get there. One game at a time.

Focus.

Have you ever heard a MLB or NFL team say we just want to win the wild card and go home? I bet CPJ will not be satisfied to just go to a bowl game.

It's like Bear Bryant said:"Our goal is the national championship. The SEC championship just takes care of itself."

It's probably better for us to focus on something in the distance rather than some particular game. Mid september here and rather than our goes going to Miami thinking about beating UNC the next week we're thinking about how to win a national title, which means no losses pretty much.

There's nothing wrong with setting tough goals, but four weeks into the season we could be 1-3. That's a big challenge for a bunch of young guys who were chanting for a championship the month before. That bad start could still be turned around, but it will take character and discipline. I hope the MNC hype doesn't set us up for a tough fall that is mentally a bigger challenge than our opponents.

What hype?

Right now the team is focusing on perfection. I see nothing wrong with that. If they begin to think they've arrived and stop working it would be a problem, but I've seen no evidence of that. Look, these guys are smart enough to understand what's going on. But as a motivator they are thinking 13-0. I'm just wondering if some people would rather hear them chanting 9-4 when they break the huddle?

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with thinking you're unstoppable, because when you think so, you know you have to prove it. Nobody on the team just expects to get there doing nothing. Like I mentioned earlier, you have to set goals. Last year was to beat UGA, and they were determined to do so, and did.
