First off I want to start by saying I was very pleased with the amount of fans we had and it was great weather.

Jaybo Shaw - was the worst I've seen him in spring practice all year. He was missing a lot of reads and had way to many turnovers. He didn't really have time to make reads or anything though since the OL was horrible. He kept the ball way to many times and probably had over 20 carries. He did have a few nice runs. His passes looked okay not great but not awful. Jaybo is a tough kid though. I will give him that. He took several hard knocks but got right back up. Didn't look comfortable with Bedford at all. Jaybo has looked a lot better in other spring practices.

Tevin Washington - he has come so far in over a year. He's finally starting to learn the offense and is showing improvement. He has a lot of athletic ability that just can't be taught. His passing had improved but he still has a long way to go. He did impress me a lot today though. I would give him a B+

Jonathan Dwyer - didn't play very much but had a nice run. He broke two tackles in the backfield and got about a 30 yard run. He did look a step slower though. Didn't really play enough to grade.

Preston Lyons - this kid has really stepped his game up. He had a solid game. He is very tough to bring down and fights to stay up. A very tough kid. I would give him a B.

Richard Watson - another kid that is tough. Just another guy that adds a lot of depth to the B back spot. Had some good runs today and very good size. He has a ton of potential. Give him a B-

Roddy Jones - really played a lot today. He had some good runs and is really understanding where to run with the pitch. He had some nice catches as well. Has improved since last year. Give him a B.

Marcus Wright - started today and I don't see him losing his job. He is really fast and makes plays when he gets the ball in his hand. He is also the best blocker on the team IMO. Give him a B+

Embry Peeples - really showed out today. He had a 60 yard TD run in which he looked like the play was over. Also made a great catch in which he had to come back to the ball. Give him an A for the day.

Anthony Allen - very impressive. He is a really tough and has great speed for a guy his size. He is a monster. He showed great moves in the open field and did a lot better job at blocking. He seems like has a real mean streak in him. A+ for the day.

Demarius Thomas - didn't play enough to grade. But he did make an amazing catch. His blocking is great.

Tyler Melton - blocking is getting a lot better. He got a couple of reverse pitches today and looked amazing. He wad so great in the open field with the ball. B+

OL - really needs a lot of work. The defensive line was in the backfield as soon as the ball was snapped. It didn't look good at all. There was a lot of fumbles with the center exchange. What's great is we had over 800 yards with no offensive line. I really hope we get a lot better him. D+ here.

Sedric Griffin - this kid is nasty. He hits with everything he has everytime. He looked improved from last year. B+

Brad Jefferson - had a ton of tackles today. Was in the backfield a lot and forced a fumble. I feel a lot better about our LB core after today. B.

Jon Lockhart - really came out of nowhere but was good. He had 9 tackles that I counted and flyed over the field. B

Morgan Burnett - he seems liked he has bulked over the year. Didn't play a lot though.

I agree with much of what you said. I will say the OL and offense looked good at times and bad at times. Very Jekyl and Hyde.

The reverses really threw the defense off.

Alot of the fumbles were Jaybo's fault not the O-Line's, IMO. Jaybo did not look very good.

You do remember that this is not the OL that will line up in the fall, right?

I know three out of five starters are out. But injurys are bound to happen in the fall as well.

Did you watch the oline last year? Just curious. Because all I can wonder here is either you didn't pay attention to the oline last year or you are a parent of one of the olineman.

Griffin delivered three really nasty hits in the game. He was very impressive.

We have the best depth we have ever had at runningback.

I don't think we have anything to worry about defensively. Cooper Taylor will add more depth in the fall and we'll be even better.

Burnett looks like an NFL player right now. He won't be here in 2010. I would like to see him outplay Eric Berry this season.

I see no one on the schedule that we shouldn't beat and several teams that we should just absolutely pound into submission.

He was right on par with him last year but really didn't get his due credit, IMO.

Eric Berry: 72 tackles, 3 sacks, 7 INTs (2 TDs), 6 passes defensed

Morgan Burnett: 93 tackles, 0 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 7 INTs (1 TD), 8 passes defensed

I suppose I should have mentioned that I want him to outplay him in "taking it to the house" after a pick. I really like to see more return yards after a pick. Berry is really good at that.

Yeah, that would be nice. Just know that even though Berry can get a lot of yards after the pick (200+ compared to 95 for Morgan... he only had one more returned for a TD than Morgan, though), Morgan is probably a more prototypical NFL safety. He's much bigger than Berry, too.

The point is that worrying about how the line looked yesterday is a waste because that's not who is going to play in the fall. In fact, if the OL had dominated the game it would mean our DL would really suck since many of those guys will not see the field. Yes our OL needs to improve over last season, but yesterday was not when you were going to see any indication of it.

That's awfully wishful thinking, NC. Did you notice how many injuries we got to the O line last year? What we saw on T day could very well be our starting O line by the time November rolls around.

Our O line will probably be fine for Jacksonville State. Past that it's a big question mark.

Let see if i understand this:

1. The offense gains 800 yards with out an OL, or a sorry OL anyway, and earns a D+ grade.

2. The Defense gives up 800 yards and 59 points and the lowest score is a B.

Looks like your grading system has some flaws. If we start this season with the B defense we better hope the D+ offense can keep scoring.

What will happen when our B defense meets an A or even a C or B offense on your scale?

There is some pretty scary analysis!!!!

That's a good point. EVERYBODY can't look good when we are playing each other.

Hopefully generally speaking our higher guys on the depth chart are noticably better when they go against lower guys. One thing is for certain, we aren't ever going to be a program that stocks starter-quality depth at all positions so if you can't tell a clear difference between our first and second string then they are probably all mediocre, not all great.

Given that everybody can't look good I'd rather the O-line look worse at this point.

There was more to that game than these stats, but to play along, our defense will force 8 fumbles so I think we'll still be ok.

I'm not saying the OL will be good or bad, just that we won't see that lineup. We may see some of those guys sprinkled in, but I would bet now that the #1 unit we saw yesterday will never see the field all at one time in the fall.

I think he just ranked the OL as a D+ not the whole offense. Go back and look and you will see he gave most players on offense an A or B.

My point exactly:

The defense is not going to force 8 turnovers per game. I dont believe the OL fumbled the ball yesterday, may have been two bad snaps, but if the QBs and the skill players don't fumble, does the offense put up a possible 56 more points.

My point is the defense is not steller, Jaybo missed two TD's overthrowing the receiver, tevin missed AA ten yards behind the safety.

The OL is an easy target; they have struggled, but I saw a lot of improvement yesterday, the QB,s had time in the pocket and at least 7 reads were missed that would have gone to the house. And all this against a defense that faces this offense every day.

Just a little food for thought!!!

Yeah I noticed that, but I don't by into the idea that the OL had nothing to do with gaining 800 yards.
