Gator Bowl to ditch ACC?

Bad move...ACC is on the way up. SEC is still the best, don't mistake me, but they have no way of 'increasing' their prestige. I imagine in a couple of years that the top 4 ACC bowls will all be big bowls.

The Gator Bowl is "very interested" in joining the SEC bowl lineup from 2010 to '13 if the game can secure a time slot during the Capital One Bowl and a top-five pick of the league's teams, Gator Bowl President Rick Catlett said Tuesday.
Let me translate that:

In other news, I'm very interested in spending an intimate evening together with Jessica Alba, Megan Fox and a donkey at the Clermont.

As long as ACC teams don't have good showings at the major bowl games, bowls such as the Gator Bowl will start to shop around. The bowl games only care about the # of tickets sold because all that matters is money to them. This is one of the many reasons the bowl system will never be completely overhauled into a playoff system: money.

As I recall, the Gator has moved down the ACC selection list and the Chik-fila moved up. No real loss for the ACC if Gator switches their contract to SEC, since the bowls will just shuffle a bit. It would eliminate one potential Tech bowl in easy driving range of Atlanta, though. The facility in Jacksonville is nothing special.

What I see as a huge negative to this is the number of bowls we'll have. The ACC obviously wants to have 9 bowls cause they added a brand new one last year. I'd very much doubt the SEC wants another bowl slot to fill. It couldn't meet it's quota last year and it might not again this year.

So at that point, if the ACC trades bowls with the SEC, which one would we get (and will it be an unimpressive match-up)?

You better not be calling Blondie a donkey. In fact, I hope you aren't including those other girls in the same sentence with her.

Did anyone see the ACC championship game crowd the last two years? Not to mention the Gator Bowl crowd. I don't blame them.

The Gator is responsible for their own crowds sucking. The BE just isn't much of a draw. WVU travels well. Maybe USF would put some people in the stands. But UConn, Pitt, Rutgers, and Lousiville aren't going to pack a stadium in Jacksonville.

The Gator has also done themselves a lot of damage by spitting in GTs face at every opportunity. I haven't been to a Gator bowl where at least 60% of the crowd hasn't been GT fans.

In the end though, the ACC needs FSU, UM, and Clemson to get over the hump. Those three, along with GT and VT are good draws on the east coast.

No matter what we think about the quality of the ACC, the cold hard facts suggest the ACC sucks--especially at bowl time--over the past five or six years. Unless and until we show up, this kind of posturing is to be expected.

If the ACC loses the Gator it would be terrible. Outside of the Orange Bowl and Peach Bowl the Gator is the only decent bowl game the ACC has. What bowl could we possibly pick up that would even be close to the prestige of the Gator. While the Gator is not the best Bowl it is far better than we could get with the current perception of the ACC.

What he said. What is interesting, at least every time that Georgia Tech or Clemson plays in this bowl, is we always outdraw whoever else the Gator brings in. The matchups have never been all that compelling with the Big East also-ran (although GT-WVU was solid). When we played Notre Dame in '99 there were more Tech people then Notre Dame folks.

I know there is now a Big 12 tie in inder certain conditions- they ought to use that solely and drop the Big Least tie-in.

It was funny til you mentioned the donkey!

I hope you're not on its receiving end

Let's get the Sun Bowl, great trip and maybe the alamo bowl against that group. big 12 or something like that. great recruiting as well.

I hate Jacksonville. Hate it.

Me too! Jax lacks tourism destinations. Other than being at the game live there are few things of interest here unless you find searching for 9mm shells along the streets entertaining.;)
