Return of Miami Good for ACC (and us)?

Well, that's the point. You may hate to hear it but it is reality.

BC or Wake can have the same record and yet not get the same attention for the conference. And if our conference gets positive attention then that is good for us.

I'd hate to win the ACC and have it mean as much as winning Conference USA. We need the perception of the ACC to be better because the polls determine the BCS order and the polls are all perception.

The media doesn't think the ACC is any good unless one of those key programs is good. They'll overlook the bottom feeders in a conference as long as it has a few top programs that they recognize and perceive as quality.

It takes YEARS of great performance to change perceptions and think of a program as a top program. But once you have that perception it also takes years to lose it. If UVA or Duke has a great year, then it will be an oddity. If FSU has that same year then it gets much more attention.

I want GT to do well, obviously. But it will be better for us (in the eyes of the voting press and coaches) if we do well against an FSU team that is strong than if we do well against a barely bowl eligible FSU.

Unfair? You bet!

But, until we have a playoff, perception is critical to the success of the program. And we haven't been good enough long enough to carry our own cachet.

I've got an idea. How about we just concentrate on winning and not worry about how good the other teams are?

I've got an idea. If you don't want to discuss things that affect the GT sports program, don't post on a GT Sports Discussion board.

If you are actually a member of the football team, or a close advisor of CPJ, then certainly YOU should concentrate solely on winning. If you are only a fan, like me, then I don't think your "concentration" or lack of it is going to help much either way.

Haha, sorry man. That's not really what I was getting at. I just don't think it really matters from our perspective. I doubt that FSU really cared when they were the only great team in the ACC for all those years. I agree that it raises an interesting debate, though. I guess I'd rather beat good teams, but I'd settle for just winning.

BTW, I don't know if Miami is on the way back or not. But people are talking about it, which is what got me thinking if it indirectly helps us to have one or more of the traditional ACC powers return to form.

I subscribe to the zero-sum theory when it comes to UGA. Anything good for them is bad for us. (There were serveral long Hive threads on that subject.) But I think the opposite is true of our ACC rivals. We want to beat them but also have them be well respected.

I'll buy both of those... especially when it comes to ACC teams we play in that year. I cheered for VT against Nebraska today.

My Dad is a big Bama fan, but always wanted Auburn to come into the Iron bowl undefeated so it'd be a bigger deal to beat them. I just can't stand to do that with UGA. I hate them too much.

I hate your guts for this post and I hope you die.

Just kidding. The thing is..."IF" we win all our games (which we will not because of line play) then we will surely be good enough to play for the MNC. It's a no-brainer. We DO NOT NEEDmiami to be good/respected to make our league good. Maybe if you're worried about public perception, then yeah..."GO MIAMI" but other than that..screw those beaners to hell and back.
