2008:

6.01 yds/play
2.07 TOs lost per game
24.38 points/game

2009 so far:

6.35 yds/play
1.67 TOs lost per game
28 points/game

If we assume that (Clem+Miami+JaxSt)/3 = average for our opponents for last year, then we're on track to improving offensively.

Like Paul Johnson said, things aren't as bad as they seem. The offense is almost there with the "new stuff" but I think PJ is going to take it a step back and just become really good at what we did last year. Better than being just ok at the new stuff.

Thanks for pointing that out. We should ideally be closer to where we were at the end of the year, but at least we're ahead of where we were this early last season.

EDIT: I read that as the first three games from last year, too. Good to see we're above average over all of last year.

The stats that beej presents just support what CPJ said in the press conference. We are improving on offense. Our problem is defense. We can still improve even further on offense.

We have had some big runs this season. Do they have a stat on how many stalled drives we have had this season? We'll say none scoring drives of less than 20 yards.

As I recall we had a shi* ton of long runs last year too. 60+ something of over 20 yards, if my memory serves me correctly.

Yeah, we were really unbalanced last year too. We are running a home run offense for sure. It kills me to hear the anouncers talking about the "ball control" and "three yards and a cloud of dust" option offense. Our O doesn't look like that at all.

Which is why the blocking is so critical. We have to block on every play and let the defense try to be perfect. So far this year the defenses we've played don't have to be perfect because we can't execute our blocks.

There are several plays that if we make a block or 2 that we should, then our guy is standing in the endzone and we're all singing RWFGT!

beej, compare the last 3 games of last season vs the first three of this season. That's probably a better indicator of progress.

explain why it is better

in most cases you would want to see the change over a long period of time, rather than a shorter period of time as you are suggesting

why would you pick a shorter time period

when you dont play for a while, like the off-season, you should expect a little back sliding at first

so your claim seem even more silly

Is there data on gains on first down? I don't have any facts, but my feel is that we are getting less on first down--sometimes because we pass unsuccessfully--and that we are in tough down and distance situations relative to last year. Might just be my imagination.

So 9 months isn't a long time?

You're just being obstinate.

Not exactly.

http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2009&rpt=IA_team1down&site=org&div=IA&dest=O

That says we're getting 16 first downs per game, which ranks us down around 100th nationally this year. Funny thing is, we were only averaging 16.3 first downs per game last year, also around 100th nationally.

We're converting 42.5% on 3rd down this year, as compared to 36.65% last year, so that's an improvement. (surprisingly) Only the top 12 in the nation converted 50% or more.

We're 47th nationally at passer rating, with a 136.95. Last year we were 92nd nationally at 112.

I'm scared to look at the defense numbers...

This isn't surprising considering how much of a chunk of yardage we get per first down usually. :)

When you get 15~20 or more to get a first down they should make it count as 2. :)

3 games with 6 months off, no that is not a long time
that is a long time off

much better to hit every data point you can for the whole period

you are being dumb about statistics, please abandon scientific pursuits, you are better suited for a role in fabricated journalism

you obviously don't know what "progress" means then.
