Tailgate Troubles

I wanted to give everyone a heads up about some trouble we've had recently with our tailgate. About 50 fraternity alumni, friends, kids and family members, along with about 150 other folks in a couple of different groups, have been tailgating on the lawn at 4th Street Apts on Techwood for the last 6 or 8 years.

Last Saturday about an hour or so before kickoff we were visited by a few GTPD officers who, realising how ridiculous it was, asked us to move along. We complied, and have been trying to figure out why for the last few days. They have a few reasons, none of them that I think are very valid, pointing out isolated incidents that I've seen a handful of times if that and never a big enough problem to be addressed by anyone before.

Essentially housing is saying that they're enforcing a "long standing policy" that only dorm residents can use/be near the space around the dorms, and that people in the dorms shouldn't be disturbed by gameday activity (I'm curious about their plans to get BDS@HGF moved up the hill since its so close to east campus dorms, not to mention those RVs that cause such a ruckus).

Honestly I'm not sure what will come of this, but I don't think its a very good move, and I'm pretty disapointed that the powers that be at GT aren't putting housing in line and being more pragmatic about it. The gameday experience, at least closer to the stadium, at GT has improved significantly since we started setting up shop and I hate to see them "cracking down" on a good sized group of alumni, almost all of whom donate to TECH fund/Roll Call. I'm also left wondering whats next, and how we'll know we won't be asked to leave our next spot. Ademic buildings, the student center, the library, etc have just as much of an argument for quiet as the dorms do, if not more.

So just a heads up, hope this isn't going to start happening to everyone else, but I've got a sneaking feeling it will.

Anyone else having similar problems, or were we the first to get burned?

I try to go there before every game and tailgate hop to see friends... I'v only made it to one tailgate there so far(I slept in before UNC, and got out of class right before Clemson) but from my experience everyone there seems to mind their own business, they're all really nice, and not messy at all... That's THE place for tailgating... was it close to kickoff or something? I mean, next to the Varsity, the 4th street apt's common area is the place to be for tailgating...

maybe cuz it was a noon game? was it early?

It won't become a big issue because:

Athletic Department >> Housing Department

The GTAA has way more pull than the GT Department of Housing.

My thoughts as well, but we've been in contact with the GTAA (yeah, DRad has been contacted, but I know this is probably something he'd just assume got taken care of by people who's time is less valuable) as well as the GT Alumni Assoc and no one has gotten them to relent yet.

I bet someone in the dorms complained. Those are the international dorms, at least they were as of a couple years ago.

You're tailgating with nearly 200 people early Saturday morning next to the International Apartments where almost no one is going to care about football. Did you really not think this might upset the people who aren't involved?

And no, this isn't going to spread because you picked probably the worst possible place to do this.

some RA somewhere is wacking off right now, thinking of his power and him being the wrench in the matrix

8 years without a complaint.

And no, I don't believe they're international dorms, at least not all of them. Several of the ladies in our group lived there as undergrads just a couple years ago, and at least one of the guys little sister lives there now.

It's known as I-house (mix of American and internationals, something like half and half):

Usually if a housing area has an inner courtyard, they want to keep it alcohol-free, but I am not sure if it counts as an inner courtyard at the I House.

Can you have alcohol at North Av. Apts courtyard for example? Or Towers courtyard?

I can't believe the housing department is giving people a hard time and being difficult to work with. That never happend to me as a student.

They'll probably ask you to relocate to the street somewhere so the Parking office can come and ticket you.

Classic. Maybe they'll move the tailgate to the impound lot, and you just pay a fee to leave when you're ready to go to the game.

I got more tickets with a permit each of my last 3 years than when I had my car on campus "illegally" as a freshman. With the cost of the permit, really hard to justify buying it in the first place.

Prolly a foreign nerd who speaks poor english, wears a fanny pack, and wakes up at 7:30AM on a Saturday to eat in the dining hall then study at his bedside desk for half of the day.

And to polish it off, he will possibly leave this country a la brain drain and take his degree, knowledge, and potential back to a foreign place.

Reminds me of when my roommate received a ticket in a metered spot in front of SAC because he had a permit displayed. The meter was paid, but they ticketed him because he was a permit holder and parked in a metered spot.

How about this one? A friend of mine got ticketed for parallel parking faced in the wrong direction!!!

Apparently you have to be facing the flow of traffic while parked in parallel.

I always thought this was common knowledge.

Maybe you were one of those that passed your driver's liscence test with a 70, but this is common knowledge and applicable everywhere there is parrallel parking. Poeple from the 'burbs and BFE are often caught off guard by this.

Maybe you passed all your spelling tests with a 70. Good thing you don't need a license for that, just parallel parking.
