DRad email about GT/UGA game (new stuff)

Coley had an interview with DRad about this.

Here are some other comments from Radakovich about the suggested move, and certain fan concerns that may go along with it:

(Why does it seem there has been such sharp backlash to the proposed move?)
“I don’t know. There is such a great passion with our fan base. When you have preliminary discussions about things, there is a reason they are preliminary discussions.”

(How long have the discussions lasted?)
“Off and on probably for three or four months. Mostly with Gary (Stokan, president Atlanta Sports Council), some with Damon (Evans, Georgia athletics director).”

(How confident or optimistic are you that the game could be played?)
“At this point in time, I wouldn’t even venture to put a percentage on whether this will occur or not. We’re going to continue to have conversations and to be honest, it has to work for both parties. Actually, it has to be able to work for all three parties, since we have the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic involved, as well.”

(What if the game doesn’t work out, what’s the backup plan?)
“We looked at some opportunities, and we hadn’t been able to find one that works, but that doesn’t mean we won’t continue to look to be a part of that game, because it's beginning to be big, and now with the college football Hall of Fame coming here, it will continue to just get bigger.”

(What, if any role, does the moving of the college Hall play in wanting to secure this game?)
“I think anytime you can create more enthusiasm about college football your town, it’s a positive. So our hats are off to the Atlanta Sports Council and Gary and all the folks that have worked so hard and for so long, including George Morris (Tech alum and Atlanta sports leader), who passed away a couple of years ago and was very instrumental with Gary in being one of the first people to have the idea of moving the College Football Hall of Fame from South Bend to Atlanta. George was a great Tech man, but he had college football and Atlanta at heart.”

(Have there been talks about playing someone other than Georgia if the proposal doesn’t work?)
“We look at our schedule, and look to Gary see if it can work out, but there’s nothing concrete just now.”

(What do you say to the traditionalists who don’t want the game moved one year or otherwise?)
“I would say that if it worked out, it would be strictly a one-year change to move for the reasons I stated — to move Georgia and those other three ACC schools off of our rotation of being at home or being away, make that game permanent, and bring it back to its traditional, end-of-the-year slot.”

(Has Georgia been very understanding of Tech’s concerns about wanting to free up its home schedule on odd years?)
“It has to work for both parties. And I can’t speak for Damon on the timing of it, but I think we understand and the coaches understand that it would be a one-year deal. We’ve never had any conversations about permanently moving that game to the beginning of the year.”

(Just what are all the positives about playing in the game?)
“There are a lot of positives. It’s going to showcase the state of Georgia, it’s going to showcase both of our programs, and whether it’s the official or unofficial kickoff to the college season, it creates a great environment here. And certainly to showcase both the institutions would be a tremendous positive to the both of us.”

Article is a lot longer...this is just the Q/A with DRad that he posted.

BuzzMD, at least one aspect of that interview encourages me: he's clearly very well aware how much the fans don't want this. It's kind of funny, his answer to basically ever question is, "It's just a one year thing." Even when he's asked directly what he would say to people against it even for just one year, his answer is, "I would say that if it worked out, it would be strictly a one-year change..."

So he's pretty much saying that he knows we hate it but we should just deal with it.

I don't think it'll go through. I understand the plan, but I dunno... I'm just not feelin it.

Oh yeah, it'll sure be a great way to break in a brand new quarterback in his first collegiate start ever.

sheesh

This will absolutely be a home for UGA. It's 50/50, folks, when they play at our house, at least outside the stadium. It will be like tailgating in Athens. Ever wore gold in Athens on Tech's gameday? It's pretty damn bad. Anyway you look at this, Tech will get the worst end of it.

So, even when we're home, it's 50/50? Then it really doesn't matter. I do like the idea of getting the game off cycle. Why can't it be in the Dome on Thanksgiving weekend?

sheesh

Didn't Alabama do that this past year when they played VT?

Just to be clear, I don't support the CFA GT-UGA match up.

Maybe y'all should just deal with it, then.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see Jaybo being the starter in 2011.

I don't either, not unless he bulks up a great deal without losing any of the speed he already has. Jaybo isn't going to become as fast as a guy like Trevin, so his only hope is to become stronger.

I was really just pointing out that I think our backup in year 4 of the CPJ years will probably have a start under his belt. If not, he will probably at least have some playing time. Although this won't be true if our defense doesn't step up and help us to seal a game before the 4th quarter.

I would rather play Clemson on the road two straight years to balance out the schedule than move the Georgia game from Thanksgiving weekend.

Why don't we get a Clemson neutral site game?

Maybe back in the day Clemson fans were polite enough to just stamp paw-prints on two dollar bills to show that they wanted to come to Atlanta. But the current specimen of Clemson fan strikes me as being more inclined to fill cement trucks with fecal matter and unload them on North Avenue.

We don't need that. The smell from the human waste would wear off, but it's very difficult to get rid of the odor that comes with an army of Tiger fans.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere - I know D-Rad wants UGA, Clemson, and Va. Tech to move off the same home schedule. But what happens if in 7 or 8 years, these aren't the best teams anymore? If Miami becomes what it once was, UNC starts to pick it up (doubtful), or Virginia Tech starts to struggle for whatever reason, then what happens? I understand that UGA and Clemson will always buy tickets due to the rabid fans they have, but this does remind me of the ACC putting Miami and FSU in opposite divisions (to the detriment of other considerations) and not having things happen as planned.

The only really valid point you have there is with VT. As you said, U[sic]GA, Clemson, and really UNC will always bring in a large gate, even if they are mediocre, so it would be ideal to not have them all in the same season.
