Notre Dame recruit Matt James died Friday in Panama City, Fla., after falling from a hotel balcony, several media outlets reported.


James, 17, was vacationing in Florida for spring break. A 6-foot-6, 291-pound offensive tackle, James was named USA Today first-team All-American after leading Cincinnati's St. Xavier to a No. 4 ranking in the final state poll.

The father of fellow Notre Dame recruit and St. Xavier quarterback Luke Massa told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the teammates were on vacation together.

"Luke is devastated," Gary Massa told the newspaper. "He lost one of his best friends."

James chose Notre Dame over Ohio State.

A Notre Dame spokesman said the school would have no comment until Saturday.

I think this happens more often than folks think. In aboout 1985 or so, a college student in PCB got killed trying to make a jump to the swimming pool from the 5th floor. Landed on the walkway not far from my buddy's room near the pool.

I believe that was the year I was in Ft. Lauderdale on spring break - the very last year that Lauderdale welcomed spring breakers. Looking back, I can't believe I made it out of there without somehow getting hurt - although I'd never try to make the pool from a balcony.

I remember last time I was down there, someone had died from falling off a balcony. Seems like every year I used to go down there it happened

My one and only trip to PCB in 1985 was nothing short of a nightmare. Nothing that happens there would surprise me.

PCB is still awesome though. Just be responsible, which seems to be too much to ask for.

I think this is the second person to fall from a PCB balcony in a week.

On my senior trip to PCB --back in '83-- the door to my motel room jammed while I was in the room. I scaled the balcony from my room on the third floor, going across about six rooms. Then for some reason I went back to my room --scaling balconies again-- as the door was then unjammed. I'm lucky I didn't fall --and yes, we had a pony keg in the sink of my room --so alcohol was involved.

Probably should have tried unlocking the door - of course, alcohol was involved.


1985 must have been the nightmare year for spring break everywhere (prior poster). Ft. Lauderdale was pretty much a full scale riot the entire time I was there. We were there for only 3 days of that week before heading south to Key West. The pool at our motel - the A1-A Regent - was full of furniture/TV's whatever else was in a room that could be thrown in there. How I remember the name A1-A, I don't know.

I did hitchhike one night up and down the strip at Lauderdale to god knows where. I remember going to The Button at one point. Scary. I could have been easily murdered if the wrong folks had picked me up - and there were TONS of the wrong folks down there. Fights everywhere. Ratio of men to women was worse than the ratio at GT.

last time I was there, two women were fighting over a parking spot and one of them killed the other... that was 2 or 3 years ago, and I'm never going back.

I'm an upper middle class white male. I'm never guilty of anything. Have you not learned that from this forum?

On a more serious note, I parked in the CNN deck with no problems. Didn't have to get physical with anyone.

No problem....You must have capped her ass and took the spot. Georgia Southern style.

I work with a guy who started at GSU before transferring to Auburn. He tells stories about guys skinning deer in the dorm showers there.

Much quicker and you don't mess up your clothes. That being said, it would probably be a sign of accomplishment at the supercross.;)

You guys see all the crazy stuff you are describing. This is pretty much how I remember Freaknik. Mucho alcohol involved and many dumb things happen. That's pretty much what young drunk people do... Stupid stuff.

Any time you mix mind altering items and a large number of people, it's not going to go well.

Look at Athens on Fall Saturdays.
