Two B-Back or not Two B-Back!

Next to the quarterback the B-Back is the position of most prestige in Paul Johnson’s offense. We’ve already had some good ones with Jonathon Dwyer and Anthony Allen so a bit of precedence has been established upon which to build some tradition at the position. Coming into this season there is no clear cut number one that stands head and shoulders above all of the others as potential heir apparent to the job. There are a few interesting and exciting possibilities as we get ready to go into spring practice. That will help establish a pecking order but may not be the final judgment on who takes over the starting spot in 2011. I am going to look at the candidates in the order that I feel things will shake out on the depth chart. I know many will disagree with me on this but, as always, I am interested to hear the thoughts and opinions of my fellow Yellow Jacket fans on the matter. So here goes:

Charles Perkins – 6’ 215 lbs redshirt freshman – I watched Charles quite a bit last spring and fall and was very impressed with his burst and power running the ball. I know that he has continued to bulk up and looks very muscular just from some of the sideline photos I have seen of him from last season. He may be closer to 225 lbs by now. In any event, I think Charles really wants it and will do whatever it takes to win the starting position.

David Sims – 5’11” 219 lbs. redshirt sophomore – David is a powerful runner and has tremendous lower body strength. It will all depend on how he can adjust to the mesh and blocking requirements of the position. I think he will give Perkins a real battle and will win some amount of playing time as the number one backup.

Preston Lyons – 6’ 213 lbs. redshirt senior – Preston has seen spot duty throughout his career and is a very serviceable B Back. I think he will continue to provide a solid back up role as we enter the 2011 season.

Richard Watson – 6’1” 230 lbs. redshirt junior – Richard just has not been able to break through and gain any significant playing time. It may just be that the competition at this position has worked out in such a way as to define his role as a permanent mop up duty type player. He is the biggest of the lot and I sometimes wonder if that might be a bit of handicap for him. I would love to see him have a breakout year but at this point I am beginning to think it may not happen for him.

Matt Conners – 6’ 200 lbs. redshirt freshman walk on – I really don’t much about Matt but he remains on the roster so he is making a contribution in some capacity. With the talent ahead of him, I do not look for him to see any significant playing time.

Zach Laskey – 6’3” 205 lbs. true freshman – I don’t think Zach will stay at this position. There is just not a real need with the depth already established. He is a hard nosed kid that is just a natural football player. I watched a lot of his high school games, and I think he will end up either on defense or he might just make a heck of a wide receiver. He probably needs at least a year in the strength and development program but look for Zach to be a big contributor on our team somewhere down the road. He will most likely redshirt this coming season.

So my thoughts here are that even though we do not have any proven starting experience, we have significant talent and potential. I look for one of Perkins or Sims to win the starting job with the other providing a majority of the backup snaps. What is exciting is that both are young and have several years to contribute their talents to Georgia Tech.

So neither the number 1 or the number 2 guy on your depth chart have ever taken a single snap at the position.

I am not sure I share your optimism here.

B-Back has got to be the easiest position to learn on offense.

Step 1: Rep "the mesh"
Step 2: Rep "the mesh"
Step 3: Run fast

You are concerned about the B-Back position?

OK, my title of "BBack in the Saddle Again" was much better.

Nice write-up though

Well he is saying that those two guys are clear cut better than the other guys listed. Some people are just better athletes than other who are more experienced. I.E. Perkins and Sims over Lyons

Perkins was the best running back in Georgia High School two years ago. He is a stud and would not have reshirted last year except he was injuried in fall practice.

CPJ also said that he was going to try Sims at several different positions.

I think the job is Perkin's to lose.

I would agree that your title would have been the winning GAY title IF we had a returning starter at B-back. But since we don't, Jerry's homosexual title is much more appropriate. So the award for Gayest poster in this instance, shall go to Jerry.

Yes, B-Back is the most natural position on the offense. In other words, where the other positions have a little more of a learning curve, B-Back is more like a normal running back position where skill and natural ability and instincts can carry you very well.

I must concede your point since there isn't a returning starter. I will step up my game for the remaining positions.

I'm not sure I buy into the notion that B-Back is the easiest RB position to learn in our offense or that it's natural.

Most running backs are typically asked to hit gaps and avoid contact, and they usually don't expect to get hit when they don't have the ball. Our B-Backs are regularly asked to run full-tilt into contact when they know the gap will be closing and they won't be getting the ball.

Ant said it took him several actual games to fully appreciate this. I expect that Sims or Perkins will win the starting job, but I'd like to see Preston get several series in early games to help so that the new starter can process what's happening.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Perkins ends up playing A-Back for a year (or 2?) like Ant did if Sims wins the starting B-Back job.

Sims could also play some A back. We just have to get him on the field somewhere.

BOR, even though I am handicapped by being straight, I do appreciate the thought behind your post. It's good to win at anything.

Neither did Dwyer but he had a pretty good first year I'd say.

Nothing will make us happier than Sims or Perkins becoming a Dwyer right out the gate. But we all know what happens when we pin our hopes on those who have never played a game time snap. You can have all the measurables and be a scout team warrior, but nothing is quite like playing in an actual game.

Damn I cant wait to see these guys in the spring! I agree with you Jerry..Either Sims or Perkins will win the job. I could see Sims being moved to A back like ANT did until Dwyer left.

Does anyone know if practices will be open?

Jerry and BoR....you guys are funny!! Jerry, I like the "gay" titles....they add a bit of flair to an otherwise straight-as-an-arrow stingtalk forum. Your write-ups are great too!

Where's architech?

So Drummond will no longer complete for this position? The roster shows him as a LB now, but I don't remember him moving there.

Just wondering about the concensus opinion on this question:

Does anyone think Preston Lyons would gain 1,000 yards in 2011 if he is the full-time starter at BB?
