For all you haters who thought we would slap a redshirt on Vad and call it a year, PJ had this to say:

He said incoming freshman Vad Lee will have a chance to compete at quarterback in the fall. He said the keys will be how quickly he can adjust to the speed of the college game and to the higher level of talent.
“We’re definitely excited about him,” he said.

Our QB play this spring must have really left something to be desired. We know Tevin isn't the answer and Sinjyn must not have impressed.

Look for Vad to crack the two deep a few games into the season and then see live action.

I might get flamed for this, but I would really hate to burn Vad's redshirt for a backup role. If he does not win the starting job then he should redshirt IMO.

I think many people expected him to at least compete, or be given a look in the fall. However, their point is exactly what coach alluded to, the time it takes to adjust to the speed and talent of the college game, as well as learning the offense. I definitely would not take that quote as to say that Vad will quickly become the starter, unless the guys we have are very poor, or Vad is extremely good.

I think you're making a pretty large leap from "he'll get a chance to compete" to "he'll crack the 2-deep a few games into the season".

To me, it's simple:
1) Tevin - knows the offense the best and makes the fewest mistakes but has the least athleticism of the 3.
2) Synjyn - probably the 2nd best athlete but knows the offense better than Vad and has more reps at college speed so he'll be ahead of Vad
3) Vad - best pure passer of the 3 and most likely the best athlete as well but is, by far, the least experienced. I don't doubt that he'll impress with his athleticism when he gets on campus, but he will have a very uphill battle to get on the field in the fall because of the lack of experience.

And I'm not sure what you expected CPJ to say, "Nah, we'll go ahead and redshirt him without even giving him a shot at the position"?

IMO, Tevin really hurt his chances of playing as a true freshman when he decided not to enroll early. I can understand his desire to finish out his senior year but I think it eventually causes him to redshirt this year.

Hmmm. No, I think most here had already declared Vad a redshirt. They said he needed a year to learn the offense and for physical development.

I believe PJ's comment about Vad is very significant and not just coach speak. PJ obviously was not pleased with the QB play this spring...to the point where he said a true freshman who has not arrived on campus would compete with a redshirt junior.

What did you expect Johnson to say? "We're looking so good at QB, that we might even revoke Vad's scholarship"? Of course he's going to say Vad's going to be given a chance. Just like he'd say about every other incoming freshman.

It is definitely a large leap and is my personal prediction.

I don't know whether to be really excited because Vad is that great of an athlete or disappointed because neither of our current QB's really stood out in the spring.

PJ said that TW currently has a "significant edge" over Days at this time. We all know what TW is capable of, so this piece of news is not encouraging. If Vad is that great of a passer, then I say let's give him a shot. We desperately need a passing game to open up our offense.

He would not say that about every incoming freshman.

He would not say that about every incoming freshman.

Yes, he absolutely would. Saying they will get a chance to compete when they get on campus, is like saying they will get a chance to breathe when they get on campus.

I still say it, Vad Lee will redshirt his freshman season. There is not a doubt in my mind.

Do you really expect a QB to come in that has never ran the TO and start for us?

Synjin ran an option offense in high-school and was the starting QB for at least his Junior and Senior year. He has been at GT for a Fall and a Spring practice and is still struggling with the reads. Tevin has been here 3 years and started or played significant minutes in 5+ college games. Do you really expect a kid with no college experience and no TO experience to supplant two guys with vastly more experience than him in a matter of 12 to 13 practices?

There is hype and there is delusion, the people who are in the Vad can start for us from day one are in the delusional camp.

I expect CPJ to say that he will compete in the fall. Hell the third string guy is a walk-on and I guess he is competing for the starting job.

I hope that Vad Lee comes in and is all-world but if Athleticism is what wins you the starting jot at GT, then spring competition would have been no competition and Synjin would have been taking all the first team snaps during spring practice. Ball security, knowledge of the offense and the ability to make the proper reads are what it takes to be the starting Qb in our offense, athleticism is secondary to those things. That is why Washington is the current #1. Vad Lee will be so far behind the curve of the two ahead of him there is no way that he will be in the mix at Qb this season unless by injury to Washington or Days.

Absolutely agree Vad will get a chance to compete, but as a true Freshman I expect him to RS. But for a coach to say an incoming Freshman will not compete you would then see them bolting for other programs.

Haha, "haters." I'm as big a Vad fan as anybody else here and still think he'll RS. Of course he'll get a chance to compete. You think CPJ is going to leave him on the bike all fall and not get a single rep? Every player competes for the position - whether its probable they'll get a RS or not. So of course he's going to compete for the job. He's going to compete, have a tough time getting the timing down, have a tough time pitching with both hands, have a tough time with reading the defenses and changing the direction of the play, have a tough time adjusting to playing against a collegiate defense, and have a tough time balancing college classes with football. And the most likely outcome is he RSs and has a prolific 4/5 year GT career.

"Hater"...

OMG, Paul Johnson is saying the guys we have suck!!!!! Nooooooooooooooooooooo

Since when is having a reasonable expectation being a "hater"?

I think bonehead or whatever his name is thinks it's him against the rest of the world. Don't know. :dunno: Meaning he thinks people hate him for his thoughts, posts, or something. Again :dunno:

I'm glad they have high expectations for Vad, and he's going to be given every opportunity to earn playing time or start. No one knows how he'll react to everything from the college experience to playing with the big boys. I'd have to think it's going to be tough to win time as a true freshman, but any good coach if he thinks the kids got a chance is going to give every opportunity for the best player to play.

I wouldn't take much stock in spring anyway. These guys have a lot of work to do before Fall. I'd think Vad will be working out with team this summer too. People have the mind set that they can't improve. I'm glad Joe Hamilton was given the chance to improve.

Hope to see everyone Saturday!

I like Vad Lee. I hope he gets his chance and exceeds all of our expectations. I fully expect TfW to be the starting QB all season though.
