Who would do better at GT than Paul Johnson?

good question, and one that should be answered BEFORE getting rid of PJ. I'm all in favor of it if the next guy is going to produce more wins. That being said, I know of nobody that can do better. I do know plenty that can do worse.

No one would do better given GT's love for handicapping itself. Until the Hill bullshittery is fixed, CPJ is the best coach GT can hope to keep.

What good coach in his right mind would a) come here, or b) do anything other than view GT as a stepping stone?

Steal Spurrier from SC. We wouldn't lose to Georgia anymore and our coach would be the most entertaining man in college football. He hates Georgia more than any human being in the world IMO.

growing up a UF fan, i would love nothing more than to have spurrier. however, considering his age, i doubt he would leave to try to build up someone else. However, he may have a protégé that we could steal.

Something that needs to be looked at is the list of pros (of which there arent many)to coaching at GT before we can even think about new coaches. Thats the only way we could determine who would gladly leave where they are to come coach here and thus be ACTUAL candidates for the job.

I can only think of 1 legitimate pro and that is Atlanta both for the local talent and the location of the school. The sad part is that it can also be a con as we are in the heart of the effing SEC in the current CFB climate where everyone has a hard-on for all things South Eastern Conference.

If we are fishing in non-AQ territory, then we can sell the ACC?

A list of names is meaningless. The next head coach will be Ted Roof if and when PJ is replaced. Whether that is a good or bad thing is the real debate.

Someone save this. He's 100% right. I don't know if CPJ turns it around... But if he doesn't, we already have his replacement on staff.

I am so sick of this thread - it keeps coming up in one form or another. Some of you people need to google Stockholm Syndrome.

See the truth is that there are a lot of college coaches, some are good, some are bad and some are just in the wrong place.

To make a blanket statement like there is no other coach in the entire world that could do better at GT than CPJ is just stupid.

Do I have a list of 30 coaches to hire - nope - not my job. Do I believe there are a dozen smart young coaches out there that given a chance could succeed ? Yep - sure do because it happens all over the country each year. Coaches come and coaches go, some for the better and some for the worse.

Are we "doomed" by the Hill to be a 6-7 win team ? maybe - but if so, why not hire a $500K coach that teaches the OL to block instead of a multi-million $ coach that has them flop on the ground like mackerel.

This argument was already had 6 years ago when people didn't want to fire Chan Gailey. You CANNOT be afraid of possibly moving backwards in your attempts to improve your current situation otherwise you'll never get to where you want to be. Period.

If you think Johnson has recruited to his full potential and coached to his full potential given the restrictions we have in place, then you have a point. But he hasn't. Really it hasn't even been close.

The school itself needs to be the first to make changes. And they need to be made immediately. Once that is done, the coaching needs to be addressed too because currently the coaching of this team is horrible. I repeat, HORRIBLE. So yes, I think we can do better but change needs to be made in two places and the coach is secondary to the school handicapping our athletics.

Oh don't worry, I'm sure Gus is totally tired of coaching at Auburn. He'd love the change of scenery. Every coach knows that GT is a really good place to build a franchise!

Ken Wisenhunt, he is a great TECH man, played with Roof. He could keep Roof and Pelton on and maybe convince Godsey to take the OC job. That would be a great team.

Fill in the blank!

"Ken Wisenhunt will beat Georgia with Recruiting Leftovers by: _______________"

Ken Whisenhunt isn't coming back to Tech. Get realistic and stop smoking from the pipe dream.

And why is that?

Really? I see all your damned to hell posts that show no more than emotional diarrhea on the board. What makes you think we can attract a coach of Whisehunt's stature to GT? You think we got the money to pull it off? Even if we did why the öööö does he want to walk into a situation with limiting restrictions to be competitive? Not to mention he has little experience in the college realm, so what makes you think he's going to come here? Because he's a "Tech man" that loves his alma mater and wants to bring it back to the glory days? Tell me you have more than this pipe dream?

There is and has been since Dodd a huge gap between our expectations as fans and what is and has been possible of achieving on the football field.

Given the admission standards and still limited majors compared to every other top 25 ranked program, it would be impossible to recruit a replacement for Johnson that would stay any longer than enough time to find a better job; wherever the replacement coach went to school. Look at our history back to Dodd, coach change after coach change and the problem still remains unfixed.

Speaking as someone who was in favor of replacing Gailey and posted many opinions here expressing the same, there is no value in discussing replacing CPJ with anyone other than for self-satisfaction/abuse.

I think maybe saying that Replacing CPJ is wrong may be too much, but rather that Firing him before the end of contract is the bad move. We aren't doing so bad I think, even in recruiting these days, to say we need to bail or die. Firing Johnson ahead of time is basically burning money, we don't really get anything out of it besides satisfying some stupid people. Letting him go if he is still at Gailey's level is more reasonable, doesn't send the overly high expectation message to potential coaches and gives us the largest possible offering money-wise to whoever we get to replace.

Serious question for the folks who want to can him. Give some names and list why you think they'd be able to recruit better (with the Hill limitations) and scheme better (obviously with inferior talent).

First, me. Second, my five year old granddaughter.

Lol. Typical BOR response, "I have no actual answer for your question but I'll act like a douche anyway to make you sound stupid."

I gave you an actual answer. We can't afford him, he's got better prospects than GT and he isn't coming into a situation with one arm tied behind his back. What do you think the chances are of Whisenhunt coming here? Seriously. You really believe he would be interested in the job, and at what price to us? So after we ask, and he says no, who's next?

This doesn't even get into the possibility of why Ted Roof is back here in the first place.
