Byerly

So your saying we got a guy that can do this, we know it, the other team knows it, and we choose to make him ride the pine his whole career. Dude just put up 87 YARDS in 1 quarter playing with our scrubs against the other teams 1st team defense.

Dumbass of the Week Award goes to you my friend. Keep up the moran!!!

Wow. I didn't realize his stats were so good. You may be right. If we started him, we might even beat a team so badly we could get our backups work for an entire quarter.

How has he been riding the pine his entire career? He was in goalline situations to start the year, but CPJ thought he had to work on something until recently.

This stuff has gone back to Reggie Ball and Taylor Bennett. He started in 2007 and didn't do that much better, though he didn't have Calvin. Then you have Tevin vs. Vad. From 2012 to 2013, the offensive FEI went from #26 to #38. Maybe we lost players other than Tevin in 2012, but it's hard to see Vad being the savior many thought he would be.

Clearly, for non-goalline situations, JT has an athletic toolset that Byerly just does not have. Byerly is a fine goalline QB and maybe for true two-minute situations where we're obviously passing, but I don't get this obsession with the backup being better. Especially when we score a TD every drive except for one fumble.

It's great to have a backup QB like Byerly. I'm a big fan. I don't really see him as a difference maker at any other position. I'd love to see him used exactly as he was in this game.

[insert emoticon that makes this comment to be what it is, ridiculous.] sounds as though you are Byerly's Dad.

Byerly has done very well in the situations in which he has played. We do not know whether he is better than JT, but as well as JT has played this year it seems extremely unlikely that Byerly would be as good, and I am confident PJ has an interest in giving the team the best chance to win and more information than us as to the best starting QB. This comment seems so silly that I had to respond, though maybe I should have just laughed. In what world does the statistically best offense in the country need to change something with the offense? Now, if you are suggesting defense, I am more open minded.

So the OP has now deleted his posts. It looks like he did that once before.

WTF is up with this guy? Byerly's dad or some other relative is a real possibility.

Also, Bennett has a pretty good arm as well as evidenced from the end of the Duke game and his pass to Choice yesterday. I feel very comfortable if something should happen to Reggie that Taylor could come in and do a good job.

When JoeHam leaves we will suck so bad, we have nobody at QB. Godsey will never be able to run this offense.

Some of y'all are too harsh on OD1492. It was a fair opinion to think Byerly should get more time on the field. I disagreed with it but it was not "retarded" and it doesn't necessarily mean he's Byerly's dad.

We might need to think of how to get Byerly involved more if there is a risk he might transfer out to FCS for playing time in his final year. I'm not opposed to giving him series when we are ahead but the game is not over (like we did against either Pitt or UVA), to cut down on injury risk for Thomas and to give Byerly more game experience.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few plays with Byerly and Thomas on the field at the same time. Byerly lines up at AB, the offense shifts and Byerly is QB and Thomas is AB or vice versa. Imagine defenses would have difficulty adjusting their scheme with the players on the field. Maybe too much of a ööööööö to pull off, but who knows?

+1

Byerly's a good player and it's a legitimate question to wonder if he's a transfer risk.

This forward pass thing by Heisman will never work. We should fire him and go with Alexander.

It's fun to think about both of them being on the field at the same time, but I REALLY don't want JT5 throwing a block at AB.

Byerly is a very good second man. That is a testament to a good team. In this offense especially you need two good quarterbacks. I think that the coaches at TECH have instructed Justin to slide to avoid hits and run out of bounds if available. Justin is great but smallish and Tim serves the purpose that we will always need with Justin at the helm.

Yes, a key position where we are actually fortunate to have some quality depth with Byerly

If JT is dinged I think we would be in decent shape at QB if Byerly had to take over, that certainly has not been the case in many years

Sure would like comparable quality depth on the D line, now that would be a great thing to have

Let's clarify two things

1. No relation to Byerly whatsoever. Knuckleheads calling me his mom or dad led me to delete the posts. That kind of nonsense has the remote possibility of negatively affecting the player.

2. Justin Thomas is the starter and should be. I'm not calling for the backup over the starter at all. Like everyone else, I expect him to start every game for the next 2 years.

So, having cleared that up, I still feel that Byerly is gonna need more time on the field somewhere somehow. Contrary to popular opinion, playing QB in the triple option is not a dangerous position. CPJ has 25 years of history that backs it up. It's very likely Byerly sees little playing time backing up Thomas. It's also very likely that a player as good as he appears to be will not be satisfied ending his career as a good backup plan. Really good QB's that are stuck behind younger starting QB's usually wind up playing for somebody else.

Byerly should, imo, get a little more playing time - but not a ton more. I'm sure it's already been said by many others, I'd love to see Byerly get involved in 3rd and short and 4th and short. The main issue with that is it gives away that we are probably running midline or some QB follow play. Regardless, he and Days give us a better shot at a tough yard than JT and Days.

I think it also makes sense to get Byerly involved in some BB plays next year. He's a pretty decent runner and we will be very thin at that position next year. No idea how he can block, so I'm ruling AB out.

Now that you've cleared that up, it is "clear" to me that you don't really understand how football works. Good teams have capable backup players at every position.

Now I'll ask again. Where else would you put him on the field? He's really only suited to play QB, and he's a great role player in that regard. He has seen and will continue to see the field in the short yardage goal line situations.

JT could go down injured at any time, and having Byerly uninjured and ready to go is a great insurance policy.
