Linked here for the curious. A mix of standard responses and very minor news items – line play is never as good or as bad as it seems; practice has gone well; cornerbacks need to be more consistent; Juanyeh would spell Malik if needed; UNC is very talented; etc.

He's sticking with his 'we didn't do nothing new' story – "We ran the same play against VT that we ran against South Florida thirty times. I don't know. Maybe they didn't watch the tape." That's adding insult to injury in Blacksburg.

Also whatever 'hot seat' pressure CPJ is feeling this season is not translating to any greater patience or engagement with our various beat reporters. At the end of the interview, CPJ is asked about the "tight set" we used through much of the VT game.
Q: "The tight set that you guys used, what are the pros and cons of that?"
A: "It's just like anything else. It's just tight set." [shoulder shrug]

I am sure meeting the press can grow old quickly but these are your biggest allies in building interest in the team in a competitive market. Gotta work with them rather than be snarky, even if it's not the most intelligent question.

CPJ straight up doesn't like Ken Sugiura. I remember there being a reason, but I can't recall why. I don't understand why the AJC doesn't put somebody else on covering GT, unless they like getting non-answers and snarky remarks when Ken asks questions.

They've had a job posting on indeed.com for the last 8 years. Nobody applied.

CPJ is in the very unique position of approaching retirement age without ever having been fired as a coach. I don't think he has even lost an assistant job due to the head coach being fired, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong. As a result, he never had to develop the nuances of diplomacy and public relations that most coaches adopt to advance their career. For some people, being respectful to folks who are just trying to do their job comes naturally, but some people have to learn it. At this point, I don't think CPJ cares much if he gets fired, or figures his public relations skills won't tip the scale anyway. He probably needs a press secretary to interact with the media on his behalf.

Which reporter does he like? I'm not aware of any.

I don't know why he won't just answer the question though.

For the "tight set" I assume they weren't talking about his balls. I haven't watched any film, but I assume that refers to the WRs being tight rather than split out. I don't think he's changing the split distance between linemen is he?

Tight set definitely refers to the WR brought into the line. I don't know if it also means line splits change. "I'll have to check the tape."

Why doesn’t CPJ explain what he is doing when he changes the formations so we (opposing defensive coordinators, too) can all have a better grasp of what he’s doing?

Damn, it’s like you guys want him to reveal the blueprint or something.

IIRC, a reporter once printed some player information, injury status I think, that CPJ didn’t want released. I can’t remember if that reporter was Ken or Quinlin.

You really don't believe this do you? Do you really think opposing DCs don't understand what PJ was trying to accomplish? These guys are long time professionals, making hundreds and sometime millions of dollars, watching and breaking game film down daily. Pretty sure they're not depending on how well PJ provides a response regarding formation.

Iirc Cpj said we simplified our blocking for the tight set (iirc he said it was zone block instead of man) during the Monday show. If hes going to bring it back again, I understand not wanting to talk a lot about it. Might have been me, but the splits looked a little tighter too.

I’ve actually liked ken as the AJC best reporter. Isn’t really hot or cold as a reporter just neutral.
