10 UCF Players Opt Out

You realize 3rd and 1 from the shotgun is pretty normal these days, right? I used to scream at the TV when teams backed up from the line into the shotgun in short yardage until I realized this is modern offense and the teams probably succeed more than they fail given the more options they have with read option, etc. Just watch any saturday games and most spread teams do this.
I realize it’s fairly normal (in addition to QB sneak), but that doesn’t mean it’s intelligent. We did not have the O line to do that last year and had an extremely low success rate. At some point you have to look at the results and consider an alternative.

That’s a way of looking at it and I understand that. What I saw against the Citadel was an OC that was unwilling (or incapable), to adapt to the game situation. And I’m hoping that isn’t the way it is this year. I hope the game plan as outlined doesn’t completely override doing what works and is necessary to win. The first rule of P5 football is you don’t lose to the Citadel.

The Citadel wasn’t all on the offense. Our defensive scheme just wasn’t very good at stopping the 3o.

We didn’t have the O line to run a QB sneak either.

Yeah, hearing coach's comment at the end of today's press conference explained that one didn't it?

Yeah, Collins can coach a D. There is no doubting that. But his base scheme lines up poorly with the flexbone. It is kind of like Mickey Andrews at FSU. He was a great D coach. But CPJ took him to town. And the Fridge did it too running a double option with Joe.

On the flip side, you can adjust your scheme to stop the option and get significantly worse at stopping everyone else, aka the Bud Foster approach.

If you don’t want to change your D scheme, it is easier to go ball control on O and wait for your D to get a turnover against the 3o. That was Richt’s approach and it worked pretty well. Shoot, that is what LSU did in the Peach, where we got yards but no points.

Mickey Andrews always had better players. If he was at a BC instead, his defensea would have been garbaggio

You watched a different game than I did then. What I watched was an already decimated OLine become more decimated. We should have issued them red capes because all they did was wave them at the pass rushers as they ran by and we didn't really block anybody well enough to run the ball either.

I hold this opinion as well.

No, we watched the same game. Just wearing different colored glasses. The defense had apparently never seen a 3O offense before. The O line sucked. And CDP didn’t inspire confidence. I’m counting on us being better all around this year.

Oliver 8.4 ypc, Mason 7.1 ypc with the longest run between the two being 25 yards. We played the wrong QB if we wanted to win. Our OL was able to run-block that game.

Plus, the D öööö the bed holding the Citadel to 40+ minutes of possession.

You've not coached a heck of a lot of any sport, I would assume. I have a career travel ball coaching record over .800 and have had over 35 players get college scholarships (17 out of 21 from my final 17-year old team...5 of those were D1 schollies).

Yet I helped a buddy coach a 15U team two years ago that was devoid of talent to play at a high level. We lost most of the games we played. I guess I "just didn't inspire confidence" enough in those players.

Long story short...you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Congrats on having 20/20 hindsight vision. You should use your brilliance in evaluating QB's to help the NFL with drafting players. You'll be rich!

None of my discussion has had anything to do with your or my coaching experience so let’s leave that straw man out.

CDP didn’t inspire confidence in me. I have no idea about his ability to inspire the team.

In summary:
There’s no way we had less talent than the Citadel on the field. We should not ever have lost to them.

I am sorry your hindsight vision is so poor. You should try using a ‘search engine’ to jog your memory. Based on your posting history, you are probably a ‘Bing’ guy.

Pretty sure 80% of the fan base could tell midgame that we should run the ball. Get a lead, then do whatever you want.

They had to develop for the future but you also need to win games against weaker opponents. I'm not saying they had to convert back to the option but if running the ball is working, run it.
Edited to add:. That is what I did like about cpj, if a play worked, he kept running it until they proved they could stop it. Last year, it looked like they had a pregame plan and they would stick to it no matter what. Maybe they looked at last year as a throw away season (which it was) because it appeared like they were coaching every game like it was the spring game, just working on reps and evaluating players with no concern over the final score.

The Citadel games was also the peak of the ‘switch the QB by down’ personnel management. It was just a bad game all around. I don’t think we will ever see a game so poorly done by CGC again. It happens sometimes when you have a new staff.

See my edit in original post.
I agree and hope you are right. I hope they coach more to win this year.
