Yep. UGA did not even play the second and third best teams in their own conference.Oklahoma and FSU were clearly better than Ga that year. They got lucky drawing ND

I was. Saw the Bishop coming over bridge- told him we were going to winI was there. Who else was there?
We always sat in upper east that year - great seats actually. As freshmen pledges, we had to hold seats for the older brothers who stayed at the frat house drinking until just before kickoff. We took Exacto knives and a straight-edge and cut a strip from the translucent red plastic part of a Doritos bag. Then we taped the strip over the bottom of our freshman student IDs to replicate the upperclassmen IDs. I left my ID in one of the plastic photo sleeves in my wallet and flashed it like McGarrett from Hawaii 5-0 when walking through the gates. Security looked at it every game but never questioned.Yes. This brought it back for me. Tucked my rat cap in my pocket and hoped the guy checking student ID didn't rat me out Freshman year. I think Frosh had a yellow picture background. Kept sitting up there from then on.
and I've heard mutt fans try to discredit our 1990 Natty being split or playing Nebraska ranked 7th or so. Coaches voted us 1st and that was good enough for me.I was there. Couldn't believe that the mutts drew ND for the Sugar Bowl. Another case of the mutts' ridiculously easy opponents.
Some of our younger YJs don't realize how deep in caca we were then. Now is NOT..... the biggest transition in CFB history.I was there. The whole 1979-1981 period was a dark time for Tech football. Maybe even darker than this (I know, right?). The 1981 loss to Memphis at home was the lowest of the low . . . the only game Memphis won all year. And the very next week after we tied the No. 1 ranked Fighting Fisheaters, the official attendance at Grant Field against Navy was . . . less than 18000. Attendance didn't start passing 40K on the regular until 1990.
Hopefully this too will pass.

Perspective and situational awareness.
Back then CFB was at 30 Scholarships yearly and 95 Max, also back then it was much harder for players at G5 Programs to go Pro , so we never had to worry about Talented Recruits deciding to play at that level vs developing here at GT, and if you get lucky with that 30 & 95 you can build a roster much faster
Also, this was before the explosion in Facilities Spending that created a clear cut upper class of P5 vs. the also rans like us, so back then even though we didn't recognize it, we were much closer to Bama, UGA, Ohio State, than we are now, and it takes longer to catch up in an Era of of only 25 & 85 Max when you play it honest and the other Guys cull the herd of non-performers, and over sign and do other things that we could do, but choose to not do.
After a 11 year hiatus where sending Guys to the NFL wasn't important, it is hard to re-establish those relationships with HS FB Coaches and Recruits.
When Nebraska & OU ran the Triple they still used TEs, we went 11 years without using TEs, one of the most important positions in Modern Day FB on every level.
Given the differences between CFB now vs then, I have to lean slightly towards CGC when he says "the biggest transition in CFB history"
I still wish CGC would be more of a straight shooter and give the Fans less coachspeak
Serving time, reflecting on my Sins.......Hey where have you been?
Serving time, reflecting on my Sins.......
Enough to be honest and to try to get the facts correct and tell both sides of the Story. Can already tell you haven't reflected enough.
PMC, "perspective and situational awareness" comes primarily from being there and living it from being more involved than most are now. Culling the herd is a relative thing, and someone from Alabama, Florida, and Miss. State doesn't change observed habits overnight, huh? Btw, we were not even close to Bama and uga, even before the arms race, today to claim otherwise would be called disinformation. Even though we had TEs back then, we wouldn't pay them like Neb, OU, and uga, so they tended to be not quite as good. Also, you might want to brush up on the not so convenient facts surrounding the Jan Kemp trial. For good measure, you might want to track down a copy of the 1980 Tech vs uga game and talk to us again about talent gaps.Perspective and situational awareness.

Not close to UGA? I remember 3iar, almost 4, before GT academics screwed us with "Flunkgate". We absolutely can compete with UGA on the recruiting trail. We basically surrendered this state to UGA, the SEC, Clemson, and a few northern schools like Ohio State. In an alternate world, we would have competed for Justin Fields or Trevor Lawrence. They didn't even bother getting close to our campus as recruits and as a reminder Lawrence showed up and threw for 404 yards against us his final season at ClemsonPMC, "perspective and situational awareness" comes primarily from being there and living it from being more involved than most are now. Look, anyone that knows a lick about CFB knew good and well that the conversion would be difficult, but to hype it up to ridiculous levels is not helpful because people know better and wonder why it's being said, which in turn makes them wonder about other hyped up comments. I won't list them because people already know what they are.
One final note, there are many many more talented ball players in high school now vs then, so maybe it is possible to build quicker, provided you truly back up oft repeated claims about elite recruiting. The 2022 class is approaching that, so there is hope, as long as next season produces Ws. I think it's possible, but if we don't, the hype machine is out of gas.

JJ, your are having a time period misunderstanding here. Not close to UGA? I remember 3iar, almost 4, before GT academics screwed us with "Flunkgate". No, I'm not. We decided to exit trying to compete for recruits against the SEC, FSU, and Clemson.JJ, your are having a time period misunderstanding here.
Sorry, I got confused---I thought we were talking about 1980. I guess we weren't.No, I'm not. We decided to exit trying to compete for recruits against the SEC, FSU, and Clemson.
Curry won one game each of his first two years and he signed Lavette himself. Like I suggested to PMC, look at 1980 Tech vs uga, the first play from scrimmage tells ya all you need to know. It's really hard to have much perspective when you weren't there.I did not even exist at the time but the draft history suggests Curry inherited significantly more talent than Collins. Two QBs, two Ts, and a RB drafted.
It appears Pepper was putting more guys in the league in a single year than Johnson was in a decade.
