2021 G1 NIU ATL Depth Chart

@ncjacket If Peery had no shot at starting, why did we recruit him? I can understand he didn't have what it takes to unseat Sims, but he couldn’t beat out Yates and that guy from Temple?
Peery had no shot at starting this year. Peery is the youngest, the "newest" guy to the qb room and did not play a senior HS season last year because of COVID. Yates is in his 3rd season under this staff, and Beatty has already played for this staff and was well ahead of Peery in the playbook and experience.

ATL making a grown man cry.

:bigcry:
He's scared.

Our highest rated recruit had lesser skills than the guy below him at the same position?

The plan is redshirt Peery, and that is what Peery wants too. They dont want he and Sims in the same class otherwise Peery probably transfers out because he ends up inthe same situation as Gleason.

But, NIU's coach does need to do everything in his power to motivate his team on Saturday night. He is facing pretty much a worst case scenario. First game, at night, on the road. A noon game would have likely been more manageable for NIU.

There are 4. You missed David Shanahan. If you’re going to give a scholarship to a punter, let’s hope he can be productive right away.
Right, forgot about Shanahan.

Also, I've noticed some schools are designating players as "Covid Freshmen" or "FR-C" meaning they are freshmen but in their 2nd year due to the free Covid year. That would be a help on ours as well.

You don’t bring in a freshman who hasn’t played in over a year with the idea that he’s going to take over from a returning starter. That doesn’t mean he won’t be the man in the future. Have some patience.

Great group of RB's. I'm predicting that Saturday we'll have at least 2 that rush for over 100 yards each.
We will definitely find out if our larger OL is up to task. This one is on S&C. We need to be able to impose our will. If we can run the ball effectively early, we can win going away.

To take a stab at it, here's the ones I see:

Jordan Williams
Paula Vaipulu
Wing Green
Billy Ward
Nate McCollum
Ryan King
Jeff Sims
Jahmyr Gibbs
Jared Ivey
Kyle Kennard
Makius Scott
Jude Kelley
Gavin Stewart

Of course, then you've got redshirt freshmen in their third year due to covid, and so on. Gonna be a bit confusing for a couple years, I guess.

Correct. Basically everybody currently on the roster except true freshman would have the "-C" designation.

Redshirting does not mean “does not play ever the whole year”.

This is one of our 3 garbage games- NIU, K St and Dook. Redshirt players need to get game experience because the other 9 games they should watch from the sidelines. In games like this in the late 3rd quarter and 4th the coaches should be cycling in 2nd and 3rd stringers at a minimum to get live snaps.

He’s not ATL, therefore he’s not playing. There’s 3 QBs that are ATL, making him at best 4th string. If he doesn’t play next weekend then he’s probably not playing at all in any game the entire season. Kind of odd look from a QB prospect that’s #15 in the nation as a recruit when we only have 2 of them on the entire roster ranked as highly coming out of HS. 1 took the starting QB job right out of HS, the other can’t sniff the top 3 seemingly.

He hasn't played a snap since his junior year. Are you a Peery fanboi or something? I'd bet even Peery would agree he isn't ready

No but I’d prefer to have a number of capable back ups behind our 1 good QB. You get capable back ups by playing them in garbage games like this one, then easing them into harder games. Every successful team does this.

We went after 1 QB out of the recruiting cycle, signing the #15 Pro Style QB prospect. Sorry for thinking he was contender for mop up duty playing time. He’s clearly a project that will be holding a clipboard for a long time. I’ll join the low expectations club.

When they are planning to redshirt someone his whole preparation is different. He’s focused on development and fundamentals, and likely running Scout team. Probably not even going through game prep. Its a decision in favor of his long term development vs trying to squeeze him in for a few handoffs vs KSU.

He’s not ATL, therefore he’s not playing.
This is a false statement. There's been plenty of players not listed ATL that have played. Hell I think we had somebody start a game last year that wasn't listed ATL. That list is meaningless and CGC only does it to satisfy a requirement.
