Conversely, the rest seem to think every option coach can’t recruit. We seem to be the only people who think there is some binary choice between the two, though. As if just any old option coach is guaranteed to win here, anyway.
So Collins, but worse at recruitingRod Carey or Thad Ward are two serious candidates.
As much as I’d love to have PJ back, this is truth. It’s not worth arguing over it. We’re not going back to it.First the joke: So you want to either hire the coach who just went 4-8 or hire the coach that just lost that 4-8 team?
Actual response
Odds are no one from Paul Johnson's coaching tree is going to be hired by Georgia Tech, ever. The controversy among the fans and the apparent dislike of it by GT management (and ACC management was my impression) is one thing but I'm not sure is even the biggest problem. The problem is it may not matter what offense either of those actually tries to run were they to be hired here, the narrative of
"Paul Johnson derived coach" = "Old Triple Option Offense" = "Complete Disinterest from NFL Scouts"
will likely dominate in the media and among recruits. It seems very unlikely that hiring anyone from that tree will ever be interpreted as anything but "Second verse, same as the first" and it will be coming back to a team that has (probably) had 4 straight losing seasons instead of a team that is 1 year removed from a conference title game.
Maybe more support for recruiting under Johnson could of changed things. Maybe having a coach to be a better salesman for the system would of changed things. Fact is the support wasn't there and Johnson wasn't able to change the narrative before he retired and that narrative will blanket the program before a game is played or a practice is held or any assistant coaches hired.
We gave up on the triple option, the ship has sailed, the bridge is burned, the horse is dead, just bury it.
probably need to get rid of AD first ... like asking the captain of the valdez or titanic to pilot your ship????
I can't believe anyone would let our AD hold the checkbook?
I hear most of this. But we lost out immensely losing Radakovich. He is a fantastic ADOK. I'll bite. Please list your grievances with Stansbury. No illusive smoke filled room vague crap ... concrete actions done with visibility to the public. Maybe even some reporting on them. Because from where I'm sitting, I don't even begin to understand the crapping on Stansbury after there's a night and day difference in the GTAA now and when that no talent *** clown Mike Bobinski was in charge.
And since you have an issue with who is allowed to do the hiring and firing ... let's talk about that some too. To my knowledge from Mark Bradley at the AJC, Mike Bobinsquatch was hired because Steve Zelnak hand picked him to be AD. Zelnak was given immense sway in that decision making process after writing big checks for the basketball practice facility and to help with McCamish. And Bud Peterson just let a booster f'n help choose his AD. Shows you how much Bud Peterson had his head in the game as President. The Bud Peterson legacy: massive corruption, security exploits, fraud, and an athletic nadir. Now, tell me what zingers you've got laying around showing how Angel Cabrera, a Spaniard, is going to do a bang up job of hiring an Athletic Director. Hmmm?
If you want to be successful in collegiate athletics the two most important positions to get right are the University President and the Athletic Director. Only if those two are the right people do coaching decisions really matter over the long haul.
I feel like Todd Stansbury is leaps and bounds better than Mike Bobinsquatch or Dave Braine(less) or Dan "Wells Fargo" Radakovich. It's almost impossible for anybody to be worse at President than Bud Peterson. Wayne Clough didn't care about the athletic side from what I've heard. John Crecine was probably the last President at GT who clearly cared about the athletic side.
So ... since everybody here thinks they're a f'n GM and knows exactly who should be AD ... let's hear your answer to the following:
1) Is Angel Cabrera the right man at President? If not, do you have the ability to help oust the current President or have Kirk Herbstreit shame them into caring about athletics on national television? If the answer is no to both of the former, enjoy spinning your wheels in a circle and accomplishing nothing.
2) Is Todd Stansbury the right man at AD? If not, why not? If not, do you think Cabrera cares / knows enough to hire the right replacement? And who is that replacement if so? What assurances do we have that some booster with too much cash and too little aptitude for judging talent (like, oh, say, Zelnak) won't royally f*** everything up again with a Bobinsquatch hire?
If you aren't happy with the people at AD and/or President, don't even bother talking about head coaching hires. There's bigger problems to be resolved first. Otherwise the GTAA will keep minting new millionaires who get paid to not coach.
Can he also bring some of the other "talent" from there?Yes- Bring the entire staff from Coastal.
