2025 Georgia Tech pre-season thread

9-3. Ball bounces the right way we have a shot at the playoffs. Wrong way and it's still an improvement at 8 wins.

And with this StingTalk szn is over for me. See all you losers next year. If you need to get in contact with me before then just let your mom know.

yeah right see you for spring training pussy

We don't have a DL and a QB with questionable ability to throw the long ball. 6-6 incoming.
QB1 historically has been a viable threat on the deep ball. QB2 can definitely throw the long ball and with his NC State film will have a ton of concrete things to focus on in the off-season. QB1 needs the off-season to get 100% healthy.

Weinke will be coaching them boys up masterfully. King is probably in the Brock Facility dropping balls into trashcans right at this very moment.

Santucci will put together a very cohesive unit next year.

The ACC will be stronger next year, but our schedule will be more favorable.

QB competition in the Spring will be intense, no job is guaranteed. Looking forward to see which receivers step up. Can't wait for the Spring Game.

These boys will practicing with a chip on their shoulder and have a marquee game for the opener to focus on.

The prospect of a season-long healthy Jamal Haynes is one of the things I am most excited about. He is becoming one of my all-time favorite GT players. His score against Georgia went beyond talent. He's got a special combination of talent and motor.

Glad to see Miami not on the regular season schedule, that will reduce the number of late/cheap hits that need to be absorbed.

Looking forward to see what tweaks Key makes in the staff. He is probably on the horn with Godsey right now. A Faulkner/Weinke/Godsey offensive brain trust would be epic. If a true deep threat doesn't emerge next year, interested to see how they'd compensate, e.g. something crazy with tight end threats.

Key will also self scout and make sure he goes into the season with a polished game management approach.

One of the most memorable things from this year was the calmness the coaches were exuding on the sidelines in Athens. That is key to upping the consistency of the outcomes next year.

Georgia Tech football success depends on the work ethic and spirit of the team. To rise above consecutive 7-6 years we have to mentally flush the residue from the Georgia collapse and the nightmare of the refereeing and at times uninspired play on the dreary day we lost to Vandy. We need to outwork other teams in the offseason, spring and training camp.

Hyping King as a Heisman candidate does not excite me. He is a great competitor, but realistically, he did not make 1st, 2nd or 3rd team all conference nor was he one of two honorable mention QB’s. He will need to improve his downfield throws and hopefully have no lingering effects from this year’s injury. The OL needs to continue its positive development, the WR room needs to come together while losing its most gifted player, and we need a couple of dependable playmakers at RB to emerge to complement Haynes.

Defensively, we were tougher this year. But, we lacked a pass rush and failed to get turnovers, which is related to the lack of pass rush. Some young players have to get bigger, stronger and faster on that side of the ball.

Key’s tenure has been interesting. We have certainly improved tremendously over the Collins disaster. However, without the Cristobal gift in ‘23 or a few other fortunate endings it could look different. Of course, closing out the UGA game with a W would have made the overall evaluation much better.

My hope is that what we have done these past two season has been to establish our floor as a season with 6 or 7 regular season wins. The next step is to make our norm for expectations 8 to 9 win regular seasons. The great seasons will be the double digit win years. If Brent can pull this off I hope he coaches us until he is 75.

Inject this into my veins bro

Next year is year 3(or 3.66, if you count the interim year) of Brent Key’s tenure. The turnaround phases(lose big, lose small, win small, win big) look to be generally on track depending on how you look at the interim year.

I don’t believe that Key inherited a roster devoid of talent, so the 4-4 record in his interim year showed that with better coaching, player buyin and some luck, things could turn around quicker which avoided a lose big year.

2023 felt like the “lose small” year but a couple lucky games got us to a winning record and increased expectations.

2024 looked to be our “win small year that could have been even better but for a few games. Most of the wins were very close and could have gone either way with a few different bounces and three of the losses that most think we coulda/shoulda won(Ugay, Vandy and to some degree U of L) showed that we have improved but have a very small margin of error in most games that a few bad calls or turnovers keep us from winning.

So, hopes are that next year is the “win big” season. The schedule looks to be an easier path to 8 or 9 wins, but we saw from the bowl game that some of transfer losses could hurt our next step up in improvement if the transfer gains, and younger players, don’t step in and fill the holes(TE’s, deep WR threat, edge rush and DL).

I think NIL and transfer portal have changed the overall turnaround timeline but the basics of building a program still remain the same - develop your program identity and ingrain it into everything you do, get the right coaches that fit the identity and recruit the “right players” that fit into the program. I am certain that Key has a handle on where he is taking things, so I am ready for a fun ride next year.

Looking forward to next year. Maybe I can finally get back to a game.

I hope we’re 8-4 going into a bowl and we should be but I fear we’ll be Chantastic instead. Put me down for 7-6 overall, beat Clemp if we get them early and do something annoying like lose to Wake.

I love Key but another 7-6 season and he definitely becomes Chanesque.

I’m so glad we got him. Probably the perfect guy to stabilize the program in the aftermath of letting the toddlers burn the house down. That being said, he needs a mentor. Maybe he can convince Satan to coach him up or some other wise old dog to train him on handling the in-game moves? We are Clown level atrocious on clock management, we seem to lose our shit too often, etc. O’Leary and Fridge, Boss Ross, were some tough motheröööööös. He seems to have that but missing that edge that turns losses into wins. It’s almost like he’s a card short of a Royal Flush every hand.

If, and it’s a big if, we grow as a program and can play with the same intensity against every opponent every week, then Thanksgiving weekend is the one game I shrug my shoulders at 11 months in advance. I don’t say that to imply I don’t think we’ll win. Because we will. But it’ll be the best opponent we face. The other 11 games are better than 50% chance we win in my biased mind.
We will need to have some fair officiating for a change. The last 2 games of the season were ridiculous.

You thought 5 downs was bad. Just wait until the Refs add 1 second to the game clock and Colorado edges us out on 6th and goal for the winning score as time expires.

The issue w refs is disconcerting. I know we’re biased but two games in a row in which refs significantly tipped the scales makes any successful run almost impossible in today’s game. CPJ always talked about the difference between winning and losing as a razor thin margin; add to that a disproportionate number of calls at significant points in the game going against us, that pushes it in the direction of L.

For those who say the L to Vandy was due to the INT and fumble, they miss the bigger picture. I was at the game and the refs botched calls and no calls changed the momentum—a razor thin margin w a win became a razor thin margin w a loss.

I wasn’t at UGA game, but the no calls on targeting and holding and the DPI in last 3 min of rt changed that game. Would have been awesome to still win, and the opportunity was there, but the involvement of the refs moves the razor thin margin into the L category. It’s very very troubling…or just paranoia?

Maybe losing to Vandy was a good thing. I was kind of getting ahead of myself, thinking 9 or 10 wins, maybe even making a run at the CFP. Now I’m back to thinking 8 would be a good year and 9 a great year. It’s certainly better to have lower expectations and over perform than vice versa.

A lot depends on Haynes King staying healthy. Hopefully Philo can continue to mature since he's going to need to come in at some point in 2025

We may have some young DL’s coming up that are ready to pay … I haven’t looked at the roster. But taking our win total to the next level which is 8 wins or better will require us finding 2-3 more DL’s that are good ball players. Was it last year we had a player win a spring training award from the coaches then hit the portal? Maybe we can return the favor. Bottom line … subpar DL, probably subpar season. Personally, I think the coaches will come through.
