Crowds not down at FSU.

FSU's stadium seats 79,560. Here are their announced home attendance figures this season:

68,316
60,198
50,964
56,609
51,915
50,835
71,917

They are definitely drawing more than us but not sure how you can say their crowds are not down when five of their home games have drawn 75% or less of capacity.

The crowds are down in many places, but the decline at BDS is dramatic. There is still a demand for internet conversation about GT football. But, the demand for tickets is in clear, obvious decline. That is not all the fault of this staff - you can blame TV, GT marketing, traffic and parking, COVID concerns and resistance to protocols, etc. But, three wins a season in a mediocre conference is not helping. The numbers of fans who want to attend Tech football is in sharp decline.
Non-diehard Tech fans didn't like the option. So the decline started at the tail end of Johnson. Collins' complete deficiency in the winning department is really killing it. COVID only makes it worse, as its simply another excuse not to go.

It can be sort of a downward spiral effect as well... small crowds mean less atmosphere. Less atmosphere means people are less excited to go to the games in person, which of course leads to smaller crowds and thus less atmosphere.

Winning cures all. Win, and they will come.

This is a college football trend in general where fans would rather stay home than attend the games. Yeah it doesnt help that we suck ass but even if we were 6-2 we would still struggle to fill the stadium. There are no sidewalk fans of GT when the big attraction sits 60 miles to the east. GT alumni are scattered around the world. It doesnt help that college football has become the SEC premier league, relegating all other leagues to second class citizenship. The ACC in particular has been awful for the past several years, arguably worse than the AAC. There is nothing that will solve this unless the SEC suddenly stops getting the best recruits in the land and UGA moves to another state.

The one thing I did like about the TO and Paul Johnson here is it at least gave us a quirky brand that was unique to UGA's shadow. However, the problem was it did not attract any recruits which has already been discussed ad nauseum. I really, really wanted Mike Leach here because he is the passing version of Paul Johnson and its a perfect blend of quirky brand that attracts recruits too while being entertaining. Alas the timing had to be right for that ship to sail and it never happened.

It's like we're consistently getting kicked in the nuts by Bobby Dodd's decision to pull us out of the SEC. Would we still be in the shadow of UGA in the state, sure but I would trade to be in Auburn's position every year. Average 8 win seasons and beating your rival 1 out of every 3 years with the occasional championship game birth and playoff spot. I'm sure most Tech fans would take that in a heartbeat.

It’s almost like FSU Miami is a rivalry game or something

I understand the downsides to going B1G, but an upside I’ve thought about might include picking up sidewalk fans. Don’t have numbers, but Atlanta must be full of B1G alums who might get interested and even cheer for us where we’re not playing their xyz alma mater. We would fill seats playing OSU, Michigan more so than BC, etc.
Of course having a decent team matters the most.

Offensively, Chris Hatcher at Samford would be the closest scheme wise to what Leach runs without the quirkiness of course.

Speaking of Georgia State, their coach has the team playing hard and he inherited no facility to speak of, and hold your breath, actually yells at players rather than hugging them when they do stupid stuff. He makes $779,000 a year and evidently works just as hard as these GT coaches. Not that he is a fit for us, but it goes to show if you look around there competent coaches who don't require 4 or 5 million a year.

How good is he at spotting the ball on the sideline?

Does he run his kickball practice on Tuesday or Wednesday each week?

Drove 750 miles this weekend to be there. East stands was better than that at kickoff, but still not great. Thinking about the stands for some of the Clemson/VT night games of ~10 years ago. Gotta find a way to get back to that.
Gotta Win

I think the only thing that will bring fans back to Bobby Dodd is a coaching change
I don't think that does it. It will take winning, regardless of the coach. Until a new coach proves he can win, fans won't give him the benefit of the doubt and just show up.

Not bitching about attendance, just stating an obvious fact that attendance is suffering greatly because of the current state of the program. Do you honestly think if there are no changes made after the season that attendance will improve next year? The only two games I could see where we have >65% is Ole Miss at BDS 2022 since we'll play Clemson at MBS.

Official attendance at yesterday's game. In a stadium that seats 55,000. In a metropolitan area of more than 6 million. At home on my TV, 650 miles away, it looked more like about 24,000.

Georgia State vs Georgia Southern attendance two weeks ago: 17,843. In Statesboro. With a "metropolitan" population of about 70 thousand.

I also had the distinct displeasure of reading an article today about the Cincinnati Bearcats which described Notre Dame's next two apponents as Stanford and "woeful" Georgia Tech.

Sad times.
Smallest crowd since 1989 per Sugura/AJC
