5.9 yards per play and no loss of yardage plays

I think there are still some staffers we haven't suggested firing. We should probably just make a comprehensive list and then post an "air your targeted grievances thread" to shorten this process.

Seriously though, these grad assistants have got to go

We didn't get many stops last year, mainly turnovers. Defense certainly didn't turn the corner against Pitt, giving up the 80 yard run to the one yard line.

I don't know if I follow the "get off the field one way or another" comment. How does the math work for playing a more aggressive defense when the offense is more reliable?

I remember reading once somewhere (probably here) that Tenuta got first pick of the depth recruits for his defense, which is why the defense always seemed a step better than our offenses (Patrick Nix didn't help either). I don't know how true this is at all, but I imagine that Paul Johnson would keep those types for the offense now (seeing as we have something like 15 A-backs on the team).
It was true. Gailey said it at one of the signing days. I was there and heard him say it.

Essentially he said that if there was a difference of opinion over which side of the ball got the player, defense usually got first choice.

Even in this, our worst offensive year, GT offense >> GT defense. Excluding garbage games, that was the most points Pitt has scored all year, and also the most they've given up, and some of you want to blame the offense?

The problem is that we're used to our offense being so awesome that it overcomes weak defensive play. We just can't be that consistently bad on defense that an off day from our offense is a guaranteed loss. Good teams are balanced enough that when one phase of the game suffers, the other 2 pick up the slack. 90% of the time against good teams, our offense is lights out and our defense is dog crap.

Not a good example, considering he was All-American at OG. I don't think coach is hoarding players on offense. We just are not hitting any homers on Defense. Most of our better defensive players are unheralded guys who turn out to be better than advertised.

We've had to take gambles on Defensive Line and unfortunately it shows.
Gotsis was a gamble that paid off, could have easily been a flop.
Kallon was a gamble that hasn't really paid off, not a flop; but not what we had hoped for.
300 lbs of Hunt-Days was a gamble (is he better than he was at 245?)

I'm surprised no one is calling BS on the no loss of yardage plays. I somehow remember Marcordes getting a tackle for a loss on a run going left.

I reluctantly disagree. Saturday against Pitt the offense outplayed the defense in the 1st half; but not the second. The O was absolutely awful against Clemson, way worse than the D. The O was also worse against ND. I don't see any room to argue the O is much better than the D so far this year.

D was the same last year at this point when he finally started playing aggressively. Don't know why we are watching another 1/2 season of this before we decide to blitz a little more...

Well, even the last 2 games last year, ugag scored too much although we did a great job vs chubby. And msu set, I believe an OB passing record.

Some believe, perhaps correctly, with Lou Holtz when he said wtte, "if we win 50 to 49, my D did a great job." I slightly disagree.

I would honestly ask, how many "athletes" do we recruit on O and when they don't fit there ship them to the D practice field?

Wasn't happy with the roof hire. Am pretty happy with him now. When you don't have the talent or depth of your opponent, and your offense can't stay on the field, life may get a little difficult.

Op, if you don't like the defense this year though, prepare to be upset next year for sure

Offsensive and deffensive ratings from Football Outsiders (S&P) and Massey:
Year FOOffRk FODefRk - MaOffRk MaDefRk
2015 43 41 - 22 62
2014 3 54 -7 30
2013 21 68 - 35 54
2012 13 37 - 29 54
2011 15 76 - 35 67
2010 61 73 - 66 53
2009 21 48 - 9 38
2008 41 67 - 50 28

(It was their FEI that said we were #1 Off in 2014, but thats not out yet for 2015)

Roof so far seems pretty typical for the CPJ era. The fact that he's average with so many loses on the dline I think means he could give us some pretty good defenses in the future

Totally dominated on TOP as well. By Pitt. With an SEC reject at QB.

Dominated in TOP because our defense, even when in position to make plays can't tackle.

I was excited about Roof at first, but the luster is gone. The defense hasn't improved noticeably in 3 years. What are the reasons to expect things to be better next year?

This is absurd. There are many offenses that have "equalizing" schemes other than CPJ's, like Leach's offense. How many defenses with clearly worse talent make up for it with an unorthodox scheme?

Maybe Tenuta did, but we had a poor defense in 2007 and Tenuta hasn't beat the world at various positions since Tech. I credit the talent in the mid-00's moreso than the scheme.
I am in agreement with El Cid. I would rather play all out blitz 7, hell 8 if that is what it takes to force some TO's and errant throws. So what if we get burnt on occasion. Just get's our O out on the field sooner. And Tenuta's D is so much better that what we have trotted out since he left. I don't remember many times they were over exposed, maybe by Ryan and BC but heck that guy was NFL material. You have to rattle the marginal college QB's and we just aren't scheming it. I remember PJ having an epiphany last year and letting Roof know we had to come up with more pressure...he needs to revisit that conversation.

If it's not one thing, it's the other this season. It's just all a öööö show. I like Roof. I think he can get it done, but we just didn't on Saturday. The defense is allowed a bad game every once in a while too.

The crappy season has been a team effort, defense, offense and special teams.

I'm sure our defensive stats would look better if our ST and O play didn't suck ass.
