698 yards of offense

Outside of Bowling Green, I don't see us being favorites in another game. Perhaps the Cadavers too?

8 wins is a pipe dream, from the talent I saw today.

Oh well. IIWII.

I think we might be favorites against UNC, they look awful right now. I think we're likely to get better on defense as the season progresses, and our offense will keep us in a lot of them, but this team just doesn't have the "it" factor it will need to win the close ones. 8 wins is going to be a real rough road.

That's exactly what I just told 18in32 in another thread. When the game's on the line, we don't make the necessary tackle or throw or catch or we fumble, etc. Maybe it's just this class of seniors - no one steps up and puts the game on their shoulders on either side of the ball.

USF was way better than UT last year, and maybe this year, too. We don't know how good USF is yet. Better than us, obvs.
And UCF beat them last year when they were better. For those thinking we would have beat UCF last, or even this year, get a grip.

We would've beat UCF last year, as was obviated by their chickening out of our game.

Yeah, that's fair. And if we have more of this all season long, I'll be with you on the fire CPJ bandwagon, cuz this sucks. But no reason not to let let the season play out, and to let it play out with a good and hopeful attitude.

Wonder what % of the time a team that goes for over 600 yards of offense loses. Can't be that often.

I wonder how many teams have given up two consecutive KRs for TDs, had two defensive starters ejected for non-targeting, lost their QB, center, and tailback, and won.

The problem is that kind of crap seems to be happening to us a lot over the past few years. Once is an anomaly, twice is a coincidence, etc. Napoleon: "I'd rather have generals who are lucky than good."

Yes, being fantastically insanely unlucky is absolutely our problem. There is no other explanation. So we need to figure out how to get un-unlucky. Sacrifice babies to a demon god or something.

I’ll bet CPJ is considering it.

We could do something weird, like have better positioning on our ST KO Return team coverage.

Or we can keep pretending that such things are just "bad luck" instead of bad coaching.

Do you really think those two kick returns were unlucky? We've struggled on kick coverage for years, to the point where it's become a running joke. Frankly, we were lucky it wasn't three -- that first return almost went for six.

The kicks were shit. Even if the kicker can’t clear the end zone, he needs to at least give the ball some loft so our guys have time to get down the field.

Yet even with the two kick returns we still had a two score lead in the 4th quarter.

Therefore the kick returns didn't cost us the game. We were hamstrung more by the other unlucky things that happened.

I'm not sure I follow that logic, because you could say the same thing about the other stuff BeeJ listed. Even with the two ejections, we still had a two score lead in the fourth quarter, therefore the ejections didn't cost us the game. Even with the injures to our starting QB, BB, and C, we still marched the ball down the field and scored twice and had a two score lead in the fourth quarter, therefore the injuries didn't cost us the game.

What unlucky things are you referring to, and why did they matter more than the 14 points given up on kicks?

Sure, but that's been a problem for a while too. Point is that it wasn't bad luck, it was something everyone saw coming.
