I think he might just be taking the blame for someone else’s mistake instead of telling reporters who screwed up.

I have little doubt this is exactly what happened. Sims spiked it on his own. Being a good coach, he’s not going to call out his QB (Or any player) for a screw up, so he said he thought it was the right call. Anyone with a clear head and even a modicum of football knowledge could see that was a stupid waste of a down.
