A look at OC Chip Long’s Offense and why it works!

Are the blocking schemes the same though? That, in and of itself could be enough to make the difference (hopefully) if not.
The blocking schemes I've seen are mostly the same. Nobody is saying Long won't be an improvement over Patenaude. Hopefully his real-time adjustments, play-calling, game management, etc. are what will make the difference. What ibee is saying is that his "offense" or "scheme" isn't what sets him apart or makes those plays successful, because we ran many of the same formations and plays with CDP. The OP is trying to make the point that his "scheme" is successful. If that's all we have to go by and nothing else changes, we'll be in the same boat as last year. I don't think we will.

I watched about 6 or so games of offensive snaps vs. quality competition to get an idea of where he wants take the offense. It appears we will be traveling in the same direction but the car has been upgraded with new features and capabilities.

The base offense is still inside zone with RPO attachments

The transition should be seamless as we already run the same concepts.

So other than verbiage, running the offense shouldn’t be an issue

Where i see some upgrades are:

Flexibility- you will see multiple looks to keep the defense guessing and rotating personnel

Inside zone out of 12per (1RB 2TE)

RPO out of 12per

RPO outta 11

Playing to your strength- 2 reasons i believe Chip Long was the guy chosen: 1) He’s schemed around QBs with Sims skill set in Brandon Wimbush. 2) He will scheme to get the ball into his playmaker hands.

We all thought Sims should’ve had more designed runs especially in the red zone. I’m sure we will see more of this under CCL

Whether it was Anthony Miller, Chase Claypool, or Cole Kmet, CCL ensured that those were fed and put in position to get key matchups

Miller in 1on1 cov. He wasn’t lying about throwing deep off of playaction.

giphy.gif

Claypool is Man coverage.

giphy.gif

Versatility- Power and finesse in the offense. IMO this has been the reason his offenses has done so well in the redzone.

Want to play bully ball, he has that in the arsenal

Spread the defense out? Sure

Some creativity? Why not!

I indeed believe CCL is an upgrade, but as we learned the offense is heavily dependent on the play Of the OL, but I’ve seen enough to get the sense that CCL will adjust his offense to what is working so we can perform at an high level

Excellent. Thanks for taking the time to do that.
Yeah, I wasn't complaining about Long or bragging on him. I was just genuinely curious if the blocking schemes were much the same as before.

Hopefully this works out really well.

I say it all the time. You can’t scheme around a bad OL. It hindered CPJ. The Cincinnati Bengals almost became the exception to the rule but it finally caught up to them in the Super Bowl. So any hope of Long being good or CGC remaining the coach depends on the 5 guys up front

I have heard second hand that Long felt like the OL wasn't being put in a good position to succeed. I don't know what the hell was meant by it, but hopefully that combined with the fact that Key basically called this shot means that we're going to be better on offense. I am concerned, though, that Long will be in a situation more similar to Tulane than his other stops.

New capabilities, huh?

I dunno. I kinda liked when the car had that 600 HP Gibbs V8 that has now been removed and installed in that Crimson Ferrari.

Good thread. We need more of these.

On a side note, I found his press conference last week refreshing.Direct and to the point…as it should be when discussing practice and games.

FWIW: Tempo is one thing that’s going to be huge for Georgia Tech, getting lined up quickly and not giving the defense time to make calls and have the perfect defense for what Coach Long calls. It’s going to be really good just having a wide variety of plays that the team is capable of running. No matter what team we’re playing and what defense we’re seeing, the offense will have an answer for it.

“Obviously, I don’t want to hurry up to mess up,” Chip Long said. “A lot of it depends on how we’re running the ball and how our defense is playing, but (quick tempo) helps in practice, helps with the energy and helps our guys get in shape and stay in shape. You are always playing at a two-minute pace, so when we get to that point in a game, they are really comfortable with it and it’s nothing new.”

The Chip Long offense specializes in creating ways of putting defenses in very difficult situations. Long utilizes odd formations; 2 and 3 Tight-End sets, 2 back sets, overloads and bunch formations. These unbalanced sets cause mismatches and expose holes or windows in coverages. Plenty of pre snaps activity and motions are used as well as consistent play action to keep the opponent honest. A lot of what he runs isn’t typical and gives defenses looks they aren’t familiar with which creates a lot of opportunities for big gains off of miscues. Long runs this style of offense, which requires the defense to make a lot of adjustments, often in Tempo which can cause the opponent much stress and fatigue.

RPO’s (run pass option) in Chip Long Offense. Under the old OC-CDP’s run game was shut down often which allowed the opponent to focus on the pass. This caused the Offense to suffer greatly. This is why Long will dial up RPO’s which incorporates the pass to their zone-read scheme, causing linebackers and defensive backs to not bail on pass coverage when the QB keeps the ball instead of handing it off to the RB.

Another effective scheme that Coach Long deploys is running play action off-tackle runs to the short side of the field to set up a one-on-one post pattern throw to the backside isolated receiver. The QB fakes the handoff to the running back, often with a Center and play-side Guard pull helping sell the run, then quickly gathers his feet and makes the backside throw. These types of plays help back off the defensive backs and keep them out of the run game.

By adding these aspects to an offense that has a histrory in the zone-read scheme, the Yellow Jackets will have an answer to some offensive struggles, to a degree. It’s unseen how Sims will react to live in-game decision making but with two years of preparation in CDPs offense plus his physical traits, I predict a smooth transition, thus, a high-scoring Offense in ‘22, However this season success will hinge on the "D" getting drastically better IMHO!

CDP said the same things, btw.

This is the most unique and innovative aspect of what Long does, but my question is simple: do you really think we have the TEs to be effective and what does his offense look like without weapons at TE (Tulane?)?

Again, we've been doing this. This is not a differentiator.

Defense keying run vs pass and how we disguise it is an area for improvement, I'll give you that.

I just don't expect us to improve enough to overcome the departures on offense. The OL has the potential to be worse than last year given the number of starters we're having to replace. I think we'll be marginally better on defense and I expect special teams struggles. If our offense does improve substantially, then maybe we have a cheap HC hire on the staff after all.
