Academic Reform?

I remember Neff "the F" for one of my Calcs, then there was Kammerer(ererer) and his Eigen Vectors, Friedlin (sp?) for 4215 Prob&Stat was the biggest (and yes he was fat as hell, but that is not what i mean) ass on Tech campus with an ego even larger than his Hawaiian-shirt clad girth, my only C in school EVER! i still cant help but want to punch him when i think of that SOB!

Agreed, worst textbook I ever had. 35 pages of instruction, followed by half of an example and "the remainder is left as an exercise to the reader."
Oh
My
God.

So in Karlen's Calc 4 class, we had 4 quizzes and a final. The final was supposed to be worth half our grade. Each quiz had 2 problems on it.

We had to retake 2 of the 4 quizzes, because each of those 2 quizzes had one problem on them (half the quiz) that was UNSOLVABLE. Karlen didn't bother to TRY IT HIMSELF before he gave them out as quizzes. And he screwed that up TWICE in the SAME QUARTER.

So after taking 6 quizzes and getting credit for 4 because 2 were bunk, I had a 32% grade going into the final exam, which was a B on the curve, and the final was supposed to be worth half our grade. Twenty question final. I answered 2, left the rest blank, turned it in, and went to go get drunk because I knew I'd failed the class. Got my grade back and I had a B.

Turns out, over half of the class got zeros on the final, so he couldn't curve it at all, and had to throw it out. Gave us our quiz grade as our final grade.

That's Karlen.

I have worse stories about Karlen.

Karlen should be fired.

I always was jealous of the other guys in my hall that had morley. He would just give them straight up triple integrals to solve.

Our professor would give us word problems like "a bug is running over a hot plate modeled by this equation. he runs from point a to point b in a circular pattern at this acceleration. What is the rate of temperature change under the bug's feet?"

I had Chaffee for Calc 3, which is god knows what on the quarters system. He was a nice jolly old man who reminded me of my grand father. I liked him, and I managed to do pretty well in his class.

Then I had some FOB for DiffEqs. He'd say things like Nurmbda (translation: delta) and Daweedeedeeyek (translation: dydx). He may have been one of the more understandable professors during my time too. At least the TA was this nice, cute lady who thought I was cute and tried to get me to work at her company when I saw her at the career fair a few years later.

He was a nice jolly old man who reminded me of my grand father.

Hmmm. Care to clarify which one?

:laugher:

And I aced those "Old" math profs mentioned in this thread. "Neff the F" and the more evil "Killer" Cain and "Machine Gun" Line especially.

I had "Killer" Cain right out the shoot. 8:00 AM, first quarter, freshman year. That first test was a wake up call. I remembers a bunch of girls crying afterwards. 2nd and 3rd exams were progressively worse. But the final ended up being cake. I ended up with a B, which saved me from starting out with a 2.0. (Needless to say that I was one of the ones that never studied in HS.)

Brakebill for Calc I
Andrews for Calc II-- he sucked. I made a C in the class with a 30 test average, IIRC.
Couple of profs for Calc III-- easier than II, but constantly rotating douchebag profs made it harder
DiffyQs- some vietnamese guy, failed the class. checked out mentally about a month into the class.

My calc III teacher was Johnson. I was pissed that the math department wouldn't let me take the honors version of the course. They told me my predicted Tech GPA was 2.4 based on my high school grades. So I couldn't take the advanced courses. I blew the class away.

I had Spingarn (sp?) and Greene for honors calc IV and V. There was no attempt to flunk people out of the honors calc classes, so they were much more focused on teaching. Greene had the entire class over to his house for pizza at the end of the year.

The only math course I had trouble with was Advanced Engineering Math. It was just the red headed German guy plucking a rubber band and talking about Fourier Series. That was my only C at Tech. The class had about 8 C's, 1 B (a grad student of the prof), and about 10 drops.

I was a TA for Math for Management. I had Stegall, Middleton, Celaj, Witherspoon, and Johnson in my classes.
