So playing well against shitty teams means they should be the #1 team in the nation? By that logic, there should be a 3-way tie in 1st between Bama, OSU, and Clemson.

I already am hearing undefeated Alabama vs 1 loss UGAg in the SECC game. UGAg beats Bama so 1 loss LSU (assume loss to Bama), Alabama, and UGAg all make playoffs with Ohio State

Lots of "if's" there. If UGA struggled at home against South Carolina, pretty much all the ranked SEC West teams should beat the brakes off them. Also, LSU losing at Alabama isn't a given.

Well, I dont think everyone feels their opponents are as hapless as you make them out to be, but we will find out soon enough. Not that I think it matters except for your argument, but Clemson and Alabama have not blown away everyone they have faced.

I think Clemson deserves #1. I believe Alabama didnt get dropped from #1 for style points like is happening to Clemson. Certainly not out of the top 5, thats laughable.

it's probably right based upon current record and SOS. Clemson's played no one. 1-4 have to play as do 2-3. No big deal. Both Oregon and Okla will be knocking on door shortly, and Clemson will eventually be #2 or #3. Only real qqq is whether a one loss LSU or PSU is better than a one loss Oreg, or Okla. Or a one loss Dwag-shit, if it happened. But typically these things sort themselves out.

I could go off on the status quo in CFP and state that we are stuck in the "way it's always been done" and no one really thinks outside the box, even with the long overdue advent of the playoff "system". I love CFP but detest the 1980's mode we're stuck in.

What other College sport doesn't allow in the winner of a P5 conference, to play in it's championship? Frickin ludicrous! We need an 8 team playoff, with 5 P5 winners, the highest ranked non-P5 winner (cinderella) and two wild cards. Round one in NY day-ish bowls. It only adds an extra game for two teams, both of who would gladly play the last, extra game. So that argument goes out the window.

It's 2020. Pay the kids (it's will be challenged eventually and happen), expand the playoffs by one round and make this what it should be. Leave the pollsters and committee to argue over the two wild-cards, which will clearly be from the SEC and/or B10, based upon the latest poll.

BTW, shouldn't the committee be wearing red hats that says "MAKE THE B10 GREAT AGAIN"??? Maybe someday one will win a National Championship again and validate midseason, first-poll rankings. Some smart guy should run an analysis of 1st poll vs final poll and see just how far the B10 has fallen each year.

I fully expect Clemson to win out, but this is definitely an issue, IMO. Let's say we have the following scenario:

Bama loses to LSU, who wins out and wins the SEC. Bama ends up 11-1 and LSU ends up 13-0.
Clemson loses narrowly to USCe (lol) but then beats UVA 55-10 in the ACCCG and ends up 12-1.
Oregon wins out and ends up 12-1.
Ohio State wins out and finishes 13-0. Penn State ends up 11-1.
Okahoma wins out and finishes 12-1.

How do you rank those teams? I would say:

LSU
Ohio State
Clemson
Oregon
----
Oklahoma
Alabama
Penn State

But I am afraid the CFP would say:

LSU
Ohio State
Alabama
Penn State
----
losers

I'm just so tired of non-division winners getting in over teams who won their conference ESPECIALLY when they have the same record and fairly similar resumes otherwise.

In order to win out, Georgia would have to beat Allbarn and the SEC West champ. It would be hard to keep them out of the final four. But the first ranking show is a hype event designed to get everyone talking about the rankings. The upcoming head-to-head and conference championship games will sort it all out.

Does anyone know what the ACC record out of conference is this year. It also would complicate the ACC record because of Notre Dame, those games show up as out of conference.

If the TV networks are not prohibited by contract from televising a separate "rogue playoff" I would be shocked. Your idea has merit, however. I could envision someone sponsoring a holiday playoff series--much like the original bowl game model, only with a four team playoff tourist destination festival in a warm weather venue, spread over two weekends. Lots of money, and multiple champions every year.

It is possible in 2019 to do your own TV. Literally. You could put it on Netflix for all anyone cares. Netflix has a fuckload of money to spend, not that this is about the money, and it would boost their subscriber numbers at a good time for their stock.

This does assume that ESPN was not so saavy as to put in some kind of prohibition on such activity, but I doubt that actually occurred.

Because of this, the winners of Bama/LSU, Ohio St/Penn St, if they go undefeated, will more than likely be ranked 1 and 2 in the CFP. Clemson is the best team in the country, but I honestly don't have a problem with their spot in the rankings at this point. Eventually the SEC and B1G teams will cannibalize each other and Clemson will end up in the top 2 or 3.

I'm more concerned with the fact that Utah/Oregon/Oklahoma/Baylor could go 12-1 and win their conference and get left out for some ööööty SEC team that didn't even win its own division, much less the conference.

Until conference championships play a role in determining the playoffs we will continue to see a concentration of talent in a handful of schools and a steady nationwide decline in football interest. However it will take one conference getting 3 teams in, or a major drop in viewership (both of which happened inside the BCS format in 2011) for a chamge to occur.

Agreed. No sense in hating the SEC. They far and away put the most talent in the NFL year-in year-out.

Clemson has an awful schedule. OSU’s hasn’t been great, but they have dominated everyone and looked good doing it. Clemson has looked sluggish and disinterested much of the year.

LSU has a great schedule with UF, Texas, and AU...now Bama.

Bama has had an easy schedule, but also looked good doing it, just not as good as Ohio State.

I think they got it right. If they were trying to hype it, they wouldn’t have an undefeated Minnesota buried in the rankings when getting ready to play PSU.

IMO, PSU is way overrated, but resume deserving at this point.

It's not pride. Rather, if your conference gets left out you lose serious $$$ plus loss of exposure. It's way more than conference pride on the line.
