All Time Tech Starting Lineup

Red Barron at RB with Clint Castleberry.

David "Red" Barron was a friend of my Grandfather. When he heard I was coming to Tech he invited me over to his house where he showed me his annuals (were they called Blueprint then?) from his days on campus. His picture was on almost every page; a three sport star and a BMOC.

Dacula's football field is named for him where he coached and brought Dacula football into prominence.

Thanks for mentioning him.

Oh, this thread again.

Someone find a crazy lady on Facebook we can troll. It's the offseason.

I don't think anyone would disagree that Tech has some legendary players from decades past that should be on these types of lists. However since the game changes through the years, players are difficult to compare and no amount of reading about these legends will have the same impact on a fan as watching Lil' Joe lead their Jackets to a win over UGA in Athens and have a Heisman caliber season while they are cheering in the stands.

Well after losing four years in a row to Ga it was so great to see Lothridge and folks hammer them in 61 at Grant field ,kin dof felt the world was restored on its natural axis.

I'd put Wrotto on D, since he played there more for us. Given your time frame first team/second team:
Since I've been following (late 90's)

QB - Hamilton/Jones
RB - Choice/Dwyer
FB - M Cox/Wilder
TE - Heller/Foschi
WR - Johnson/White
WR - Thomas/Watkins
OL - Gardner/Robinson
OL - Dorsey/Reilly
OL - Brown/Roberts-Blake
OL - Bedford/Tidwell-Neal
OL - Page/Honeycutt

DE - Morgan/Stimson
DE - Gathers/Johnson
DT - Walker/Wrotto
DT - Richard/Anoai
LB - Smith/Wheeler
LB - Fox/Rogers
LB - Brooking/Reis
CB - Scott/Butler
CB - Cox/Houston (I'd lose Hester)
FS - Burnett/Butler
SS - Landry/Young

K - Manget/Bell
P - Brooks/Dykes
Specialist - Rogers/Freddie
LS - Economos/White?

Calvin Johnson, Clint Castleberry, Derrick Morgan, Randy Rhino are the only locks I can think of.

p.s. You can't compare today's players with players from generations ago. You have to compare players with how they fared against the competition at that time.
Could you imagine a OT from 1947 trying to block Derrick Morgan?....or a CB with a 4.9 forty in 1925 trying to cover CJ? Ha

Eddie Lee was the best RB we've had in my lifetime.

Indian Joe Guyon was an All-American stud on the 1918 NC team. Hard to say if he'd be as good as Eddie Lee but I doubt it.

Well is the point to come up with the definitive BEST team that GT could field, or is it to come up with the relatively best team?

It's all about how well they did against their peers.

The great ones in any era would be great in any other era because they would do whatever it took to be as dominant in whatever game they were playing when they were playing it. More size? They'd be in the weight room. More speed? They'd make it happen.

Greatness in a football player, true greatness, comes from within and the ability to work, prepare, adapt, respond, and react. It's character driven. There have been tons of guys in all eras who looked good getting off the bus, but they couldn't and didn't play worth a flip. Of course there has to be some innate physical talent, but that works across all generations.

Nope didnt know where I would put him,he was good qb but a hell of a safety.Did well in business world too.:dancingcool::dancingcool:

Hate to tell you but many of you know little of Techs illustrious history. Anyone who would put little Joe over Billy Lothridge proves they no little Tech history.

Oldfoggy, Hamilton was our best QB ever. Now the reason I put more modern guys ahead of some of the older dudes, is quite simple. Football has evolved and so has its athletes and guys that played in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's would have a hard time breaking the two deep in today's game. FACT!

I actually thought about putting Injun Joe Guyon in our backfield and I also briefly considered Castleberry, but he only played one year inspite of all the fanfare.

That said, I don't ever want to hear some old Tech guy tell me that Lotheridge was better than Joe Hamilton. I've seen film of Lotheridge and if you asked most old timers who don't want to show off their historical bias of old players, they would say Hamilton was better. Hamilton statistically destroys Lotheridge not to mention that Hamilton led more Game winning drives than most any other QB in Tech sports history. So pipe down.

I think perhaps the best way to approach this are two lists - a Dodd Era Team (pre-1967) and a Post-Dodd Era Team (post-1966). That would allow for more accurate comparison. Then we could debate position by position who might be the better of the two.

Here are mine:
Dodd Era All Time Offensive Team
QB - Billy Lothridge/Wade Mitchell
RB - Joe Guyon/Billy Teas
RB - Everett Strupper/Leon Hardeman
RB - Clint Castleberry/Lenny Snow
SE - Buck Martin/Ted Davis
TE - Billy Martin
OL - Larry Stallings/Pete Brown
OL - Don Stephenson/Carl Vereen
OL - Bill Curry/Jim Breland
OL - Larry Morris/Orville Vereen
OL - Billy Shaw/Franklin Brooks

K - Bunky Henry

Dodd Era All-Time Defensive Team
(difficult to place DL and DB until Dodd's last few years since so many played both ways)
DL - Eric Wilcox
DL - John Lagana
DL - Tommy Carlisle
DL - Mike Ashmore
LB - George Morris/WJ Blane
LB - Maxie Baughan/Randall Edmunds
LB - Larry Morris/Billy Schroer
DB - Jackie Rudolph/
DB - Sammy Burke/Giles Smith
DB - Bill Eastman/Tommy Bleik
DB - Gerry Bussell/Haven Kicklighter

Two players overlooked are our career rushing leader, Robert Lavette, and Rock Perdoni. They did not play with great teams, which to me makes their excellence more noteworthy. Lavette was a great runner and the Rock a dominant defensive tackle - I think our best ever.

This is in response to Barrel of Rum;
Joe Hamilton was great at Tech , but that being said he was nowhere near the FOOTBALL player Billy Lothridge was, he ran, passed, & kicked, played safety in the NFL & punted in the NFL. Kicked field goals & extra points at Tech. If he were playing in today's overhyped sportsworld he would be on the cover of every sports magazine in the country & on SportsCenter every night.
Billy the Kid could get it done, learn to appreciate those that gone before you better & learn some respect for others as well.
I don't wish to offend you but some of your posts are a little out there.

That being said I agree with all the Old Farts about the old time greats being overlooked.

Hate to tell BOR this but if Lothridge were playing during the time of Hamilton (I loved the LITTLE guy) Lil Joe would have been sitting on the pines behind Lothridge. As mention Lothridge could do it all. Pass/run/kick/ you name it Lothridge did it all. To top it off he was tall enough in today's game to have been a bruiser.
