Annual Athlon Sports Anonymous Coach’s Trash Talk

" So far they haven't exploded in recruiting or anything."

Whaa? Didn't we just sign the best recruiting class in like the last 15 years or something? I thought it was pretty well accepted that we have exploded in leaps and bounds with our recruiting.
I think it’s being compared to what Mack Brown is doing for UNC’s recruiting, but I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Brown already had the system and a winning record to work with. Collins has to go through system/roster rework -> wins -> recruiting. It will take more time for us to land a top 10 class, but we’ll get there.

We did. That could be considered a complement. Perhaps we are expected to start pulling top 15 classes every year and every so often be ranked single digits.

Plus, UNC has made it clear classwork is secondary for athletes.

I don’t see how you could look at our defensive roster (to what that comment was referring) and say the cupboard was bare. We should be pretty stout on defense this year and Clayton is really the only guy that’s expected to be relied upon that CGC brought in.

DT was weak as it has been seemingly forever outside of Richard/Walker. But everywhere else we had the deepest defensive cupboard since ‘08. Secondary especially was fully stocked.
DL was a void. LB was reliable but slow. DB only looked good in contrast. The 3O hurt defensive recruiting too.

The rise of USF and UCF really hurts Miami long term. The old Miami has the pick of all those kids. I think that is the real problem there.

It's different at FSU. That program has simply been mismanaged, but I don't think the fundamentals for success have been altered. Hell, they were champs just 6 years ago. They will be back eventually, once they get the right staff in place. No idea if Mike Norvell and staff are good are not, time will tell.
Georgia Tech has done okay in recruiting in Miami's backyard. They no longer own the "305" and it only takes a dozen programs poaching one or two recruits to really diminish Miami's share.

Ive been compiling a big spreadsheet of recruiting classes / team talent / records of the ACC teams based on 247 and was a little surprised to see that FSU was still rated the most talented team in the conference last year. The mis-management there is mind boggling. And a good coach (who snags a good transfer QB) could have them in the title hunt within 2 years.

But did you adjust for having what they need? If you get 5 star skill players with lesser players on the OL and DL, you get killed.

Wut? Who on USF and UCF's roster even had a real Miami offer?

The Miami rankings confirm that Richt did as little with great talent at Miami as he did in Athens.

Miami

"They really looked embarrassing at times last season. Losing to that Georgia Tech team is inexcusable."

"Geoff (Collins) has spent over a year managing the expectations in a very public way, which is divisive in the coaching community."
Can someone decipher this for me? Why is it divisive?
Consistently stating the GT job is “the largest rebuild in college football history” probably rubs the old coaching staff the wrong way.
Coach speak for coach speak about making excuses [by blaming players].
Ehh sort of but I think he was more blaming the system shift than the players.
I think it's interesting we're not really sure what that comment meant. Not sure if that means we've all drunk too much Kool-Aid or what.

I'm sure CPJ was a divisive figure in the coaching world, simply because of his abrasive personality, but I'd be surprised if even his friends in the fraternity were upset and trying to 'defend his legacy' the way the Athlon quote implies.

Nor do I think it makes a lot of sense that the Athlon quote is about players. To begin with, I don't think you could read CGC and say he's a guy who blames players. He seems very player-centric and the kids love him. But even if that is what was going on, I can't imagine too many coaches (at least, who haven't won multiple national championships like Urban) being upset by that. Inheriting poor players is one of the oldest excuses in the book. Not really something for coaches to get upset is being implied.

So the bottom line is that I join @Skydog in not understanding the quote.

Miami being Miami. Talent is never an issue there. However, comparing FSU to Miami in the long term, I tend to think FSU has a brighter future but we will see. Miami has underachieved for a long time now under three different coaches. Maybe the fourth one will be charm?

MUCH like us losing Ga guys to EVERYWHERE.-n.Dame, Va, Stanford, Syr,Temple,KSt,WVa,Md,Ost,Ore, even Iowa. all in '19

To think, there was a time when those rankings would have been considered disappointing for Miami. Imagine, Georgia Tech has never recruited a class higher than about 15 or so. Yet, in just the past 5 years Miami did it every year but one. I am kind of surprised that UCF rankings are not higher. They seem to get a lot of bang for the buck.

Which goes to show, good coaching trumps good recruiting
