Annual Athlon Sports Anonymous Coach’s Trash Talk

To think, there was a time when those rankings would have been considered disappointing for Miami. Imagine, Georgia Tech has never recruited a class higher than about 15 or so. Yet, in just the past 5 years Miami did it every year but one. I am kind of surprised that UCF rankings are not higher. They seem to get a lot of bang for the buck.
It easier when you only have to get up for one or two games a year.

Miami hasn’t had a good QB since Dorsey. That pretty much explains their results.

" So far they haven't exploded in recruiting or anything."

Whaa? Didn't we just sign the best recruiting class in like the last 15 years or something? I thought it was pretty well accepted that we have exploded in leaps and bounds with our recruiting.

Recruiting is trending in the right direction; but we haven't broken into top tier of the ACC yet, much less nationally. 247 has our classes ranked thusly versus the rest of the conference:

2016: 11
2017: 9
2018: 8
2019: 9
2020: 5
2021: 9

It needs to get better (and it should) if we want to challenge for the conference championship based on our roster.

I hadn't looked too deeply into it, but going by current rankings we only have 2 guys out of 19 that rated above our average from last season. Obviously we're still filling needs but hoping that improves

You can look at 247 vs rivals and see a difference in rankings. Or you can look at offer lists in a COVID reduced visitation class and see a big difference in previous years. Either way the recruiting is better this year than many previous years.

It is better than most previous years; but it hasn't exploded or anything, which is what the comment was about. We need to be in the top 3-4 in the ACC most years and we aren't there yet. Offer lists are better in part because we are recruiting to the same scheme as everyone else now, which makes the recruiting rankings more important than in years past. Everybody is dealing with COVID. If we have a decent season this year I expect recruiting to pick up the next year or 2. I imagine it is hard to recruit after what we showed on field last year.

I don't keep up with them but that conference they play in is chock full of sure wins. They are ranked in the top 25 in Athlon's preseason rankings. Don't know if they deserve that or not but they did lose to Pitt last year in a close game but rang up over 500 yards a game total offense and hung over 60 points on Temple while going 10-3. They are pretty good.

I don’t think you could sum up how bare the cupboard was better than an opposing coach saying we have “some guys who would see time on other teams.”
Yeah, that's saying we have a couple of players on defense who could actually be a decent 2nd or 3rd string on other teams. I think we may actually have a starter or two on other teams truthfully but as a whole, PJ emptied the cupboard and left nothing but paper plates in there. Pretty bad.

Our secondary says hello.

Our secondary says hello.

That's "Hello?" as in a lonely voice crying in the wilderness pleading for help.

Which is thankfully, finally, on its way.

("Alone" would be an exaggeration. There was one running back and possibly one wr of ability that was inherited. We don't know about the wr, cuz injuries. The rb is pretty good and will at least be in the rotation, I think.)

are you talking about Jordan Mason?

Yeah. He's pretty good. I hope Camp shows up and shows out, too. My favorite holdover player is a linebacker, but even I have to admit he is not fast enough for the modern game.

But even at defensive back, our best players for the upcoming year are new kids.

well, he's better than pretty good. he won't be "in the rotation." He is the clear, far and away #1 and likely all-conference. he (along with ahmarean brown) were the only bright spots on the offense last year and he will be the best player on the offense by a good margin again this year. he does have a mre talented TFr coming in behind him but he will not be supplanted by Gibbs this year. Their games aren't all that similar anyways.

at DB, Tre Swilling, Tariq Carpenter, and Juanyeh Thomas are our best players. Nobody new coming in is better than them.

if your favorite holdover is david curry then what are we talking about?
