I don't think he's a great hire, but I do think he's a good one. Besides Elliott, I like him more than the other names we threw out there.
Just don't expect a first season like CPJ had. We need to give him time.

Elliot will be the real deal in four or five more years. I'm thinking that any coach has about a five year shelf life these days. If Collins does well, he'll be hired away, if he does poorly, we'll be hiring again soon. The only way to have longevity is to be CPJ or Gailey---win just enough to hang on to your job with a fan base that freaks out over the specter of back to back 3-9's.

Elliot has absolutely no experience as a head coach. None. If it had been Elliot with Collins' resume, I'd have been all for it. Unfortunately for Elliot, he needs some HC experience before getting a Power 5 job. He needs to set his sights on a school that builds his resume. Collins has Alabama, GT, Florida, Mississippi State experience as an assistant and Temple experience as a HC. As likeable of a guy as Elliot is, GT is not a place for him to come learn how to be a head coach.

I had no idea who he was but a bunch of former players (02-08 era) I play basketball with raved about him. Therefore, I am sold.

My hesitation is simply a belief that, while our recruiting might improve, only marginally. That means, to me, that there has to be an equalizer and I saw that in the option offense. When GOL had success against UGA, it was more about them being down than it was our ability to line up better players and play with them. Then, of course, we saw Gailey’s inability to compete with them. Haven’t done a detailed analysis but would guess that we probably have finished somewhere from 45 to 60 in recruiting the last few years. So what if Collins bumps us up 10 to 15 spots? Is that doable? Will it be enough to make a difference? I hope so but am skeptical that we can improve recruiting that much and even if we do, be able to compete on the field with the Clemson’s and UGA’s of the world absent an offense that is much like what they see each week.

I'm happy. I like that his best attributes are that his players love him and that he's a solid recruiter. More than anything, we need to focus on getting more great players. GT loves to get more out of their players than their recruiting ranking portends, but it's a hell of a lot easier to win with better recruits.

It's also a plus that he has GT history and Atlanta roots; but that's just gravy.
