As A GT Fan For Close To 60 Years, I Am Still Miffed …

That the GT supporters of the 1960’s did not rise up and stop the administration’s sabotage of the football program. Coming out of the 50’s we had the best stadium in the South and a top notch football program. Then the administration did not do a darn thing to help Dodd keep up with the changing times and he finally said the heck with it in 66. Oh, we’ve had little flashes of success over the years but too many times we find ourselves struggling. When you get my age it really gets old going through these bad or mediocre years so frequently.
Do not forget one of the biggest mistakes the Institute made back then. They sold the Tech radio station WGST. Not many schools owned their own legitimate 24 hr. a.m. radio station that had shows / news /sports ( all Tech FB & BB games were on WGST ). Look at us now, we have to pay money to broadcast our games and we compete with uga on the same station.

I’m glad I was around to see this era of GT football. This was 1966 and I was 10. My Dad took me to the opener in 66 … a beat down of Texas A&M.

I wasn’t at the ‘66 opener, but I was at Tulane later in the season as a 15 month old. Not that I remember it of course, but yeah my dad took me to my first game in ‘66.

That's something I didn't know and is another pristine example of the school's mismanagement of all things athletics.

I was likely listening to Al Ciraldo call it on radio. Toe meets leather.

I remember what a sad day it was when Dodd announced his retirement. I’m really surprised he did not stick around for Kim King & Lenny Snow’s senior year. That could have been a very good team and probably given him a final victory over UGA.

In fact, it was the very reason Dodd pulled us out of the SEC. Dodd recruited with the promise to every scholarship player a full 4 years regardless of what happens. When the SEC imposed scholarship limits, it put GT at a disadvantage because the Alabamas of the league chewed up and spit out players that didn’t produce.
My first Tech memory was listening to the victory over the Alabama team led by Joe Namath.
I understand why Dodd pulled us out. The problem was we still had to compete with the SEC teams. I do not understand why he felt leaving the SEC would solve the problem. We were positioned to continue recruiting at a high level within the SEC even with the disadvantage of running a program with integrity.
Tulane left at the same time. They had been bad since the 30's. Nothing changed for them except eventually losing their game with LSU and a significant revenue stream.
Vanderbilt stayed in the SEC. They had been bad since 1950 and nothing changed.
The other SEC schools have never valued academics or integrity.
Selling WGST was an idiotic decision.

One of the greatest stories of that game: Gene Stallings was the coach of A&M, and he was on Bear’s staff at Bama in 62 when Dodd broke their long win streak. Stallings had made comments over the summer about how they were tougher than Tech was, etc.
Dodd told his players before kickoff “men, I really want this one”.
Tech scored and went up 31-3 in the final minute. Then he did a most “Un-Doddlike” thing; he on sides kicked. Larry Good threw a bomb to end the game 38-3. Reportedly, he just smiled at Stallings after the game

No it’s not that at all. I dont know how to discuss it but it’s almost spiritual. I didn’t go to Tech, but had a lot of family that did. My family has been fans of Georgia Tech for going on 80 plus years. If I didn’t cheer for Tech I wouldn’t care about college football.

Edit: actually my season would consist of cheering for Georgia to lose.
Here Here!

But we had WREK on the FM band.
